Wu Xin was momentarily at a loss for words, stammering for a while before finally saying, "Everyone... everyone is like this!"
Wu Rong countered, "Aren't you the one who switched majors to study fashion design at Romantic Country because you weren't interested in your original field?"
Wu Xin was taken aback again. "That's different! I chose it because I'm genuinely interested. And I didn't switch to math just because of you; someone in the family has to inherit the business! Besides, you... you also went on to pursue a master's and then a doctorate!"
"That was specifically to study mathematics; pursuing education is a necessary process. Is she planning to study economics?"
Wu Xin found herself speechless against Wu Rong. She couldn't argue about these matters; in today's world, especially in the country, there were plenty of graduate students. Without a graduate degree, finding a good job was nearly impossible—unless one came from an exceptionally well-off family.
Take her for example; her grades weren't great, so she could just go abroad to study what she liked. But Rao Jie was different.
Wu Rong didn't understand these things, and Wu Xin couldn't be bothered to explain. She quickly changed the subject. "Talking about this is pointless right now; we should focus on Jie Jie. She probably can't even articulate her grievances herself. Although she made mistakes, she's definitely feeling upset. You should go comfort her!"
Upon hearing this, Wu Rong hung up the phone without knocking and entered Rao Jie's room.
As soon as he stepped inside, he saw Rao Jie lying on the bed, her head buried deep in the pillow. Her body trembled slightly; she was likely crying.
Wu Rong sighed and walked in, wanting to offer some comfort, but Rao Jie suddenly rubbed her face against the pillow and sat up, looking at him.
The phrase "forcing a smile" perfectly described Rao Jie at that moment.
"Professor Wu, I'm fine! I've come to terms with it. It's just like before; I'll prepare for the graduate entrance exam as usual. I’ll be ready; it’s no big deal."
Wu Rong frowned slightly, but Rao Jie had already gotten out of bed and walked over to him. "It's almost noon; I'm going to make lunch."
With that, she brushed past Wu Rong without another word.
He had so much he wanted to say but found himself unable to voice it, silently watching as Rao Jie went about her routine.
She continued cooking and doing household chores, diligently studying and asking him for help with her preparations for the exam—as if nothing had happened at all.
Every friend who called to check on her received cheerful responses from her as if she truly didn’t care about what had transpired.
But Rao Jie’s smile was so fake that it made Wu Rong’s teeth ache just looking at her.
One night, Wu Rong was tutoring Rao Jie. In truth, Rao Jie was already quite good at math, and there was no real need for Wu Rong to tutor her. However, since Rao Jie didn’t call it off, Wu Rong naturally wouldn’t stop either.
While explaining a problem, Rao Jie’s phone suddenly rang. When she looked at the caller ID, it was an entirely unfamiliar number—there was no indication that it was a telemarketing call. Confused, Rao Jie answered the phone.
What came through the line was a voice that was both familiar and utterly nauseating to Rao Jie.
“Jie Jie, I’m sorry. I’m calling to apologize on behalf of Chuchu for causing you to lose your Graduate School Recommendation. I really didn’t expect it to turn out this way. I shouldn’t have encouraged you to help her cheat; I’m truly sorry.”
The caller was Bao Ming. Wu Xin didn’t know the whole story from back then. In fact, when Jiang Chuchu had asked Rao Jie for help, Rao Jie had felt uneasy and didn’t want to agree but found it hard to refuse. It was Bao Ming who had been urging her on the side; she was someone who couldn’t resist when two people were pleading with her at once, which led her to agree.
Rao Jie’s expression instantly darkened, and she began to tremble uncontrollably.
