Wu Rong sensed something was off and looked over. Rao Jie had no intention of continuing the conversation; she put down her phone, ready to hang up. But Bao Ming seemed to know what she was about to do and anxiously shouted, "Don't hang up, please let me explain!"
Rao Jie’s hand holding the phone began to tremble. Wu Rong heard this and snatched the phone from Rao Jie, putting it on speaker. On the other end, Bao Ming continued speaking.
"Jie Jie, I know that the recent events have caused you a lot of pain. It's all Chuchu's fault; she is the reason you couldn't secure your Graduate School Recommendation. But... I also know that the real culprit is me. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have had to compete with her for the Graduate School Recommendation, and none of this would have happened."
Upon hearing this, Rao Jie widened her eyes, biting her lip as her breathing became heavy. She suddenly lost herself in thoughts about recent events, feeling an inexplicable sadness wash over her, as if she were lost in a desolate void.
Wu Rong’s expression darkened considerably, but he was eager to hear what other shameless remarks this so-called ex-boyfriend had to offer.
"Jie Jie, I've thought it over. Since you want to compete with Chuchu for the Graduate School Recommendation so badly, it means you still have feelings for me. Since everything started because of me, let it end with me. I've decided to officially break up with Jiang Chuchu. Let's get back together; from now on, I'll treat you well. It doesn't matter if you don't get the Graduate School Recommendation; come to my house, and I will always be there to help you study for your exams. Even if you fail, it's okay; I can support you while you try again."
"Ha..."
Bao Ming's endless rambling suddenly halted when he heard a strange male voice laughing on the line. He paused in confusion. "Jie Jie, where are you? Were you just laughing? Are you with someone? Where are you so late?"
Rao Jie didn’t respond; her face was blank. Wu Rong shifted into a more comfortable position, picked up the phone, and said slowly, "Excuse me, are you trying to seduce my girlfriend by calling so late?"
Bao Ming was taken aback and immediately asked sharply, "Who are you? Who do you mean by 'my girlfriend'? What kind of joke is this? This is Rao Jie's phone! Where is Rao Jie? Where is she?"
Wu Rong smirked and deliberately glanced at Rao Jie, but she seemed lost in thought and didn’t register their conversation at all.
"It’s late; where do you think she is? Naturally, she's sleeping beside me. She was tired earlier and is now sound asleep. If you have something to say, I can pass it along."
As Wu Rong spoke, he observed Rao Jie's expression, curious if she would react to his words. However, her mind was clearly elsewhere.
Feeling a bit disappointed, Wu Rong continued to mock Bao Ming. "Stop making noise; can’t you refrain from disturbing our married life at this hour? And since you've broken up with her, don’t call her Jie Jie anymore; it’s irritating to hear. If you dare to harass her again, be careful—I might make sure you don’t graduate!"
"You... are you Wu..."
Without waiting for him to finish, Wu Rong hung up the phone.
Rao Jie was still in a daze when Wu Rong reached out and patted Rao Jie's head, saying, "What are you thinking about? I've helped you get rid of that fly."
Only then did Rao Jie come back to her senses, her expression dim as she replied, "Oh, thanks. I... I don't want to study tonight. I'm a bit tired; I think I'll rest."
Wu Rong looked at Rao Jie, noticing that her expression was clearly on the verge of breaking, like a frozen lake unable to withstand the pressure and finally starting to crack little by little.
