However, with so many people around me, there was nothing to be afraid of. I smiled and said, "It’s the same every year. The elevator is in such bad shape and still hasn’t been repaired. I wonder where all the property fees go."
No one answered me, and I felt a bit awkward. The atmosphere was strange. I anxiously watched the numbers on the elevator; it was moving particularly slowly today, and after a long while, it had only reached the third floor.
"Smells so good!" an elderly woman with a face full of wrinkles suddenly said to me.
"My mom makes the best food. These two portions are something I haven't tried before. Grandma, have you eaten? If you don’t mind, I can share some with you."
"No, no, it's fine," the old lady replied with a smile, but her eyes were honestly fixed on my bowl.
"It’s okay, go ahead and eat!" I offered her some.
The old lady shook her head while still staring at my bowl. "Really, it’s not necessary."
But a woman with long hair standing behind her said, "Little sister, I haven’t eaten either. How about you let me have some?"
"Sure." I handed her the food just as the elevator chimed and reached the fourth floor.
As she took a bowl from me, the long-haired woman grabbed my hand and said, "I live on the fourth floor. Come over to my place for a bit. Once I finish eating, you can take your bowl back."
Before I could react, I was already pulled out of the elevator by the long-haired woman. When did she press the button for the fourth floor? I didn’t even see her do it!
To my surprise, everyone in the elevator got off as well, including the old lady. "Little girl, since there are two bowls of food, I’ll join you for dinner too!"
I felt a bit dazed. What was going on with these two? It was all quite strange. Especially the old lady—one moment she wanted to eat, and the next she didn’t. Was it her pride getting in the way? Did she think it would be inappropriate to eat from my bowl?
I didn't think too much about it and nodded. Just as I was about to say "Okay!", the Long-Haired Woman frowned, "I told you, old lady, you didn't eat when I offered it to you, so why are you trying to snatch food now?"
I didn't like the way the Long-Haired Woman spoke to the elderly lady, and seeing the old woman looking a bit upset stirred my sympathy. I said, "It's fine, you can both eat together. After all, there are two bowls."
To my surprise, the Long-Haired Woman stubbornly replied, "Little sister, if you're going to be nice, be nice all the way. I have a big appetite; one bowl is simply not enough. If you only give me one bowl, I'll have to go eat again..."
The old lady sighed and trembled as she said, "Oh, forget it. My Wife isn't starving..."
With that, she turned to leave, but I quickly grabbed her arm. "Grandma, why don't you wait here for me? I'll go home and get some more."
When I said that, the Long-Haired Woman became displeased. "Alright! I'll just eat a little less today. Let's hurry to my place; otherwise, the food will get cold."
This time, the old lady didn't refuse again. However, on our way to the Long-Haired Woman's house, she muttered under her breath, "That old hag is just trying to steal my food."
I was about to get angry, but the old lady seemed not to hear her.
Oh well, it's just two bowls of rice! It's my fault; I should have known better than to ask if they wanted to eat. Since the old lady didn't mind herself, I decided not to say anything further.
The Woman lived in a cozy one-bedroom apartment; women like her who were single often didn't feel like cooking much.
I placed the rice on the Tea Table. While the woman went to wash her hands, the old lady leaned in and whispered to me, "Little girl, you've already eaten, right?"
"Yes, Grandma."
"Then when we eat later, you mustn't eat anything she offers you. It's not good for young girls to eat too much; it can make you gain weight."
"Um...," I felt a bit annoyed. How could this old lady talk like that? I have a slim and cute figure, and I don't need to lose weight; it sounded like she was implying I was fat.
"Little girl, come wash your hands too! I have some cherries imported from America; you can try them later!" the woman called to me from the bathroom.
I hurried over, "Okay!" I had just finished eating and hadn't washed my hands yet.
I tossed the old lady's words to the Arctic; even if what she said about gaining weight from overeating were true, eating some fruit couldn't be wrong. After all, fruit after a meal is great for beauty and weight loss!
While washing my hands, the woman asked me, "Little girl, my name is Helena. What's yours?"
"I'm Youmai Vegetable."
"Youmai Vegetable, heh heh, that's a very interesting name—natural and healthy." She covered her mouth with her slender fingers and laughed. "In today's society, there aren't many pure, natural beauties like you."
"Thank you." Alright, even though I knew I was just average looking, being called a beauty still made me feel a bit elated!
Helena handed me a bottle of green liquid from the sink. "This is hand sanitizer; take it to that grandma. I had a conflict with her earlier, and I'm afraid she won't want to use it."
I fully supported washing hands before meals, so I readily accepted and took the hand sanitizer to the old lady.
"Grandma, wash your hands! Washing before meals can help protect you from countless germs!"
"You young people are so fussy," the old lady complained but still poured some hand sanitizer onto her hands.
"Ah—" But as soon as the hand sanitizer touched her skin, she suddenly screamed, and smoke began to rise from her hands!
I was momentarily stunned; her hand was just smoking, but it wasn't on fire. I had no idea what to do!
“Helena! Helena, come here!” I had no other choice but to call for her.
The old lady gripped her hand tightly, gritting her teeth and glaring at me fiercely. “You... you need to run...”
Before I could comprehend what was happening, Helena emerged from the bathroom. Upon seeing the old lady in pain, she burst into laughter. “Die, old hag! How does the Soul Cleansing Water taste?”
The old lady's expression changed dramatically. “Soul Cleansing Water! You actually have Soul Cleansing Water?”
“I have plenty of things. Do you want to try something else?”
“Can someone tell me what Soul Cleansing Water is?” I was so anxious I felt like jumping up and down. After all, it was the thing I had handed to the old lady, so I was an accomplice in this.
But the old lady suddenly shouted, “Stop asking! Just go!”
Even though I didn't understand why, since Helena had caused this situation for the old lady, she surely wasn't a good person either. So I abandoned the bowl and prepared to run outside.
“Leave? Is it that easy to leave?” Helena blocked the doorway with a seductive smile. “I never expected the Supreme Spirit Tool to be so simple-minded, not even knowing about Soul Cleansing Water. Hey, didn’t your seal get lifted? Why are you still so clueless?”
Supreme Spirit Tool?
She knows I'm a spirit tool? Does that mean she's like those two Lizard Spirits and is also a monster?
“So you weren't trying to eat my food after all!”
"Of course, nothing is as delicious as your body. But that old woman isn't anything good either; she wants to eat you too, little sister. It's better for someone as naive as you not to wander around in the human world. Come follow your sister!" Helena suddenly extended her hand, her nails transforming into claws that seemed to reach for my throat.
It's over! I'm really going to die!
But the anticipated pain never came. The old lady had somehow stepped in front of me, and Helena's long claws pierced through her hand.
I quickly seized the opportunity to open the door, but to my dismay, that damned woman had locked it!
Seeing her attack fail, Helena shouted angrily, "Old woman, how dare you ruin my plans!" She pulled back her claws and opened her mouth wide. Her once beautiful face twisted into a grotesque mask, her hair dragging on the ground as if alive, her teeth dark and her long red tongue flicking out with a "swish" towards us.
I was so frightened that I crouched down instinctively, but the old lady suddenly let out a cold snort filled with authority, causing the air around us to chill. I felt like I was about to freeze solid.
"Just a Hanged Ghost, and you really think I'm afraid of you?" she hissed, her arm stretching unnaturally long as she reached for Helena's head.
In an instant, I saw a blur before hearing Helena's scream. When I looked up again, the old lady had grabbed Helena's hair, leaving her head bald like a boiled egg.
"Hahaha!" I couldn't help it; I forgot my position as the prey for a moment.
However, I was genuinely surprised to discover that beneath Helena's glamorous exterior was a bald head. What an unexpected twist!
