The two Lizard Spirits following me also turned their gaze in the same direction. The moment Su Anrong lifted his head, they both spun around and ran outside, only to be caught by Rice.
Why were they so afraid of Su Anrong?
And also, wasn’t Chen Siyuan dead? I had seen her ghost becoming transparent; how could she now be sitting in my house as if nothing had happened?
While holding onto the two Lizard Spirits, Rice shouted to my mom, “Grandma, do you have a lot of mosquitoes at home?”
My mom didn’t seem to question the term “Grandma,” thinking it was just a child’s respectful way of addressing an elder. She smiled and replied, “Not many, don’t worry. I burn mosquito repellent every day; they won’t bite you.”
“Then you don’t need to burn mosquito repellent tonight; someone can help you catch them!” He said this while asking the two Lizard Spirits, “Right?”
“Yes, yes, yes!” The two Lizard Spirits nodded eagerly.
“There’s no reason for guests to catch mosquitoes; don’t just stand there—come in and sit down!”
The Lizard Spirits followed me into the house, looking timidly at Su Anrong and not daring to come closer.
I shot a furtive glare at Su Anrong, meaning to ask, “What are you doing here?” Su Anrong looked back at me with a charming smile as if to say, “Why can’t I come?”
With so many people around, I couldn’t ask him directly and had to let it go for now.
“Wheat, why didn’t you say you brought friends? You made me cook less food,” my mom pulled me into the kitchen.
Before I could respond, Rice popped out from under my feet. “Grandma, it’s fine; those two don’t need to eat. Just tell them to catch mosquitoes!”
“This…” My mom looked at me with an expression that clearly said, “Is this child okay?”
I leaned closer to my mom and explained, "Mom, you don't need to worry about them for now. I'll explain everything to you later, okay? Be good, muah!"
"Get away, you're spitting all over me," my mom scolded playfully before returning to help my dad with dinner. "Make sure to take good care of your friends; dinner will be ready soon."
I hurried back to the living room and sat down next to Chen Siyuan.
"Siyuan, what's going on?" As I spoke, I suddenly noticed that there was a ring on Chen Siyuan's right ring finger! It looked exactly like the diamond ring Su Anrong had put on me last time!
"Wheat, your husband helped stabilize my soul, so now I look just like a real person," Chen Siyuan glanced around to ensure my parents were in the kitchen before continuing.
I stared at Su Anrong in disbelief. "How did you do that?"
"The wise have their own clever plans," Su Anrong beckoned me with a finger. "Come here."
"I'm not going."
"If you come over, I'll tell you."
"Fine!" I immediately scampered over and sat down beside Su Anrong. "Hurry up and tell me."
"Your ear."
I quickly leaned in closer.
Suddenly, Su Anrong pressed a cold kiss against my cheek and whispered before I could react, "Before we leave your house today, just cooperate with me in everything, and I'll tell you."
"You’re getting carried away!"
"You're wrong; it's about gaining an inch and taking a mile. If you don't cooperate with me, your friend's soul will immediately vanish from this world."
"You're threatening me!"
"No, I'm helping you. I care for you and your friend. But the help comes with the condition that you do something for me."
"Daddy, you're threatening Mommy! I don't like you anymore!" Rice is my true love; even he can't stand to see me oppressed like this.
Su Anrong said unhappily, "Son, don't forget who brought you into this world."
"Mommy, Daddy is really helping you; just listen to him!" Rice grinned, but isn't the tide turning a bit too quickly?
In the end, I had no choice but to compromise under Su Anrong's threat.
But soon, I regretted my compromise.
Because this meal almost didn't happen because of him.
Just as everyone was seated and ready to eat, Su Anrong suddenly said, "Uncle and Auntie, I apologize for intruding today; there's actually something I want to tell you."
Mom stubbornly replied, "If it's good news, share more; if it's bad news, I don't want to hear it."
"Absolutely all good news," Su Anrong confidently declared as he suddenly grabbed my hand, intertwining our fingers and placing our hands on the table to reveal our wedding rings—at that moment, he had transformed my ring into a dazzling golden one.
"The first piece of news is that Wheat and I are married."
"What?" Mom exclaimed, nearly jumping up as the chopsticks in her hand flew toward me like arrows.
Here comes that move again!
I was unafraid; this technique, unchanged for over a decade, was something I could easily handle. I reached out to catch the two chopsticks, but unexpectedly, Su Anrong was quicker and intercepted them.
My mother was even more surprised. "You've got some skills."
With a smile on her face, as if nothing had just happened, Su Anrong used the chopsticks she had caught to pick up a piece of Braised Pork and placed it in my bowl. Then, with a serious expression, she said to my parents, "The second thing is, we have a child."
Oh no! Suanrong! This child looks at least four years old! My mom isn't naive; how could I possibly have a child at thirteen? Are you going to tell them you're not human? They would probably rush out to buy two coffins for you!
Sure enough, my mom paused for a moment before bursting into laughter. "Hahaha! I get it! Wheat, this is your friend from the mental hospital, right?"
"Mom, do you really want your daughter to go to a mental hospital? I've told you I didn't go."
"It's okay, Wheat. Home is your warm harbor. I'll pretend not to see you coming back in the car from the mental hospital," my mom said with maternal warmth, wiping her tears.
"Are you really my biological mother?" I complained.
"Of course I am! When I gave birth to you, your dad and I didn't even sell Butterhead Lettuce; we waited three days and nights in the hospital for you. Who knew you'd come out dead? Thankfully, my love was so great that when I held your cold little body in my arms, I somehow brought you back to life..." My mom's voice trailed off as she became emotional, while Dad hurried around handing her tissues and towels.
I couldn't take it anymore. "I wasn't dead! You make it sound like you're Guanyin Bodhisattva or something, able to bring the dead back to life!"
"The doctor said you were born a stillborn. Do you understand that it was a miracle I brought you back to life? I gave you two lives; it's one thing not to be grateful, but now you're doubting I'm your real mom!"
"A real mom wouldn't think her daughter is mentally ill!"
"How could someone who's not mentally ill have friends from a mental hospital?" After saying this, my mom noticed Su Anrong's fallen expression and quickly covered her mouth, awkwardly laughing as she tried to change the subject. "Let's eat, let's eat."
Su Anrong's lips twitched for a moment before she quickly composed herself and smiled, saying, "Mom, you really are humorous."
"Thank you for the compliment." Surprisingly, her mother didn't grasp the underlying meaning of Su Anrong's words, which left her a bit exasperated. But soon, her mother caught on to another point. "What did you say? Who are you calling Mom?"
"I know this is all very sudden and you're not prepared, but that's okay. I'm ready," Su Anrong said as she pulled a set of keys from her pocket and placed them in front of her mother. "Mom, you've worked hard raising such an outstanding girl like Wheat. But from now on, you won't have to work so hard. These are the keys to the new house I bought for us. You can keep them safe. From now on, you'll be the lady of the house. I'll take care of you, Dad, Wheat, and your grandson. You can rest easy!"
Her mother's initially fierce expression gradually softened as she was won over by the keys, joy radiating from her face. "This won't do; I'm the elder. How can I manage your affairs?"
Wow, Mom, you shouldn't sell your daughter out so quickly! Just a house and you've been bought off?
"Mom, that's not right. Marrying Wheat just means our family has gained another helping hand, someone who can take care of you. I won't take Wheat away from you; we'll always be one family," Su Anrong said earnestly as she pulled out another set of keys and handed them to my dad.
"Dad, it's not a fancy car or anything. If you don't mind, just make do with it for now; I'll buy you something better later."
Su Anrong, how many fathers-in-law have you fooled with this kind of talk? Handing over the keys to a luxury car while claiming it's nothing special? To my dad, who had spent his life as a vegetable farmer, this was like a windfall from heaven!
Sure enough, my dad's face mirrored my mom's expression of delight.
I knew this was going to be trouble.
