Helena saw me smiling too much and, in frustration, scratched the door with her long nails. "I'll come find you again!" she disappeared without a trace.
With the danger averted, I patted my chest in gratitude to the old lady and prepared to leave through the door.
Just as I turned around, the old lady suddenly collapsed at my feet. Grabbing my ankle, she rasped, "Young lady, please help me..."
Although she had helped me drive away the Hanged Ghost, she didn't seem entirely human. Should I save her or not?
The old lady was wheezing, and the smoke from her palm grew thicker, revealing a hole in her palm!
I was startled and recalled that if I hadn't given her the Soul Cleansing Water earlier, she wouldn't be suffering like this.
So I cautiously asked, "How can I save you?"
Upon hearing my willingness to help, excitement flickered in her eyes before she weakly replied, "You heard what that Hanged Ghost said; you are a Supreme Spirit Tool..."
I quickly stepped back. "No way! You want me to cut myself to save you?" I'm not some kind-hearted saint; if it requires sacrificing myself, I really can't do it!
The old lady smiled kindly. "No need for that. You just have to let me absorb a little bit of your Spirit Energy. Don't worry, just a tiny bit won't harm your body."
"Really?"
"I have no reason to lie to you. If I wanted to harm you, I could have teamed up with that Hanged Ghost against you earlier. I simply didn't want her to drain you completely."
Seeing her struggle to explain while enduring pain made me feel a pang of sympathy. "Then... how will you absorb it?"
"My body is a bit weak right now... You... lie down next to me..."
I obediently lay down beside the old lady. Then she climbed onto me and began to draw energy just a few centimeters from my mouth.
In that moment, it felt like all the blood in my body surged toward my head, making it difficult to breathe as if everything inside me was flowing out continuously.
But for the sake of saving the old lady, I gritted my teeth and endured it. Between our noses were two faint wisps of air—my Spirit Energy.
But after a while, I felt a heaviness in my chest, and breathing became increasingly difficult. Struggling to rise, I saw the old lady still drawing in her breath with vigor.
"Ugh..." I couldn't speak or muster any strength. The old lady's face gradually twisted into a grotesque expression, as if she were savoring something delicious and couldn't stop. It was then that I realized I had been tricked!
Madam! You old hag, I was trying to help you, and you want to drain me dry!
What should I do? Am I really going to die here?
Su Anrong and the others probably thought I had gone downstairs to deliver food to the Lizard Spirits. They likely hadn't given it much thought.
No, I don't want this. Every person has to die eventually, but some deaths are heavier than mountains, while others are lighter than feathers.
Since childhood, I had vowed that I would at least die heavier than a feather! How could I possibly die in the jaws of some unknown ghost?
But right now, I couldn't move at all. I had no way to call for help, and unlike the protagonists on TV who could telepathically connect with their male leads, I was about to become a female lead who wouldn't survive past twenty chapters!
Tears streamed down my face as I truly felt the terror of death for the first time. When I encountered Rice and Su Anrong before, I hadn't felt this way at all. Even though I thought they were ghosts back then, deep down, I wasn't genuinely afraid of them.
But now, fear gripped me entirely.
As I cried helplessly, suddenly there was a "slurp" sound. The old lady, who had been sucking my Spirit Energy, widened her eyes. A shiny snot worm was wriggling from her philtrum.
No, that snot wasn't hers; it was mine—she had sucked it away!
In an instant, hope sparked within me. I quickly sat up, but the old lady was furious and lunged at me...
"You filthy human!"
"You’re the filthy one! I tried to help you, and you want to harm me!" I quickly retreated. What kind of lock was this? Why couldn't it open after so long?
"If it weren't for you wanting to come here with that Hanged Ghost, would I have been hurt by the Soul Cleansing Water? You helping me? This is what you owe me! Hehehe... Little girl, you probably have no idea how useful your Spirit Energy is. Now that my spiritual power has increased, you won't escape my grasp!" The old lady pressed me down again with her gnarled hands gripping my neck tightly like dry twigs.
"Don't worry, I won't kill you. I want to raise you plump and healthy, so you can become my lifelong spirit tool!" She smiled strangely, suddenly pulling out a fruit knife and gesturing it in front of my chest.
"It is said that the Supreme Spirit Tool has no heart. As long as I inject my One Soul into your chest, you will become my exclusive spirit tool, obediently listening to me. Little girl, I'm very gentle, it won't hurt, trust me!" Her expression changed abruptly as she raised the fruit knife and plunged it toward my chest!
"Go to hell!" Even if I had to die, I would not let her have the last word. Old hag, when I become a ghost, I'll make sure you can't even be a ghost! I have spirits backing me up!
I tightly closed my eyes, afraid to see my own blood splatter; that scene would be too beautiful for me to bear.
"Thud!" The sound of the fruit knife piercing flesh echoed, but I felt no pain. Instead, a deep and arrogant voice rang out: "You dare touch what belongs to me!"
Hearing that familiar voice, I immediately opened my eyes and was shocked to see the fruit knife had pierced the old woman's own chest!
Her face looked like a rapidly desiccating Dried Corpse, her skin slowly being sucked into her bones, revealing two large hollow eye sockets and a set of white teeth.
"Ah!" I screamed and quickly pushed away the old woman who was transforming into a Dried Corpse. Su Anrong stepped forward swiftly, grabbing me forcefully and pulling me into his embrace.
In that moment, I truly understood what it meant to feel safe. Trembling with fear, I wrapped my arms tightly around his waist and couldn't help but touch his solid muscles a couple more times.
Su Anrong pointed lightly at the Soul Cleansing Water on the Tea Table, and it flew directly toward the Dried Corpse, pouring all over it.
With a sizzling sound, the Dried Corpse gradually transformed into a cloud of thick smoke and vanished, leaving behind an unusual fragrance in the air.
"What is that smell?" I inhaled deeply; it smelled so good!
"That's your own scent." Su Anrong shifted from being the Dominant CEO to a cheeky rogue in an instant. He ran his long fingers through my hair and frowned. "How long has it been since you washed your hair?"
"Doesn't not washing it make it smell good?"
"The fragrance comes from your Spirit Energy. That Old Ghost just absorbed your Spirit Energy; the Soul Cleansing Water dissolved her soul, releasing your Spirit Energy once again. That's why you smell good. However," he sniffed seriously again, "no matter how fragrant it is, it can't cover up the stench of your hair."
"Go die!" I kicked him.
"I dare to die, but even the King of Hell wouldn't dare to collect me!"
As we were speaking, a sudden scream came from beneath the bed: "Ah—let go of me! Let go of me!"
A small figure was wriggling at the other side of the bed, seemingly putting in a lot of effort to drag something out from underneath. "Daddy, Mommy! I caught a salted egg!"
"Ah, ah, ah... you little brat, I'm not a salted egg!" the woman screamed.
I finally recognized the voice; wasn't that Helena? How did she end up under the bed? Didn't she just run away?
"If you're not a salted egg, then why do you look like one?" Rice tapped her on the head and laughed, "You could even pass for a dinosaur egg." As he spoke, he quickly drew a few lines on Helena's round head. Her originally flesh-colored head turned slightly white, with some patterns on it, truly resembling a dinosaur egg.
Helena shouted in exasperation, "I already regret becoming a nun! Even as a ghost, I'm being mocked. Is it easy for me? You little brat, if you keep laughing at me, I'll fight you!"
"You don't even have your life anymore and you're still daring to challenge me?" Rice wasn't scared at all as he dragged the struggling Helena over to me and Su Anrong.
"Daddy, Mommy, I want to keep her!" His words were shocking enough to leave both me and Su Anrong speechless, including Helena.
"Son, I never taught you to start keeping a female ghost at such a young age..." Su Anrong closed her eyes for a moment, unable to bear looking.
But seeing Rice's meaningful smile made me feel that things weren't as simple as they seemed.
