"Ah!" I exclaimed, startled.
I let out a low cry, and Su Anrong immediately sat up, grabbing my hand. "Wheat, what's wrong?"
When I looked back at the window, all I could see was darkness and the faint glow of the moonlight—nothing else. Could it be that I had been so tense these past few days that I was imagining things?
"It's nothing. I just suddenly thought about how long we've been stopped; it's so uncomfortable."
"You should rest for a bit. Just sleep, and we'll be there soon."
"Okay, but you have to keep watch for me."
I climbed into the lower bunk across from Su Anrong and made sure to glance at the window before closing my eyes, reassured that there was nothing there. Su Anrong came over to pull the curtains shut and gently kissed my forehead. "Sleep peacefully; I'm here."
With him by my side, I felt much more at ease and quickly drifted into a light sleep.
However, it wasn't long before I was awakened by a series of gentle knocking sounds.
"Knock knock." It seemed to be coming from next door. My neighbor was Fang Xiaonan; maybe she was doing it on purpose. I decided to ignore it.
But soon enough, the knocking grew louder.
I had no choice but to say to Su Anrong, "Garlic, can you go ask Xiaonan what she wants?"
"She's looking for you." Su Anrong was indeed a reliable night watchman; he responded immediately when I called.
He got out of bed and went next door.
At that moment, the knocking became even more urgent—knock knock knock knock. It was driving me crazy! If Xiaonan didn't have anything good to say when she came over, I might just lose it.
Before long, Su Anrong returned. He didn't answer me directly but sat on my bed and tucked me in. "Wife, it's nothing. Just sleep well."
As he spoke, he lightly traced a pattern in the air by my bedside and gently touched my face. "It's okay, I'm here."
I immediately became alert. "Garlic Sauce, what's going on?" I quickly sat up and whispered in his ear, "Is there a ghost?"
He didn't answer directly but said, "Fang Xiaonan isn't in her bed; she might have gone to the bathroom."
"Then who is knocking on the bed?"
"Probably just the wind moving some parts under the train. Don't overthink it. With me around, ordinary ghosts won't dare to act recklessly."
"Oh," I replied, feeling reassured by his confidence. For now, I decided to trust him.
I lay back down obediently, but my hand clutched Su Anrong's tightly, unwilling to let go. "You stay next to me; don't leave."
"I won't leave."
Sleepiness washed over me, and I soon drifted back into slumber. This time, there were no more knocking sounds; indeed, Su Anrong was quite capable.
In my dream, it seemed like two people were arguing, but I couldn't see their faces. I only knew there was a woman who was very beautiful. What was going on? Why was a woman running into my dream?
I woke up startled. Upon opening my eyes, I couldn't believe it—there really was a woman.
A tall and curvaceous beauty sat on Su Anrong's bed, her face almost touching his. "A-Shang, I never expected to see you here," she said in a voice that was sweet enough to make one shiver.
Seeing this woman—no, this female ghost—I nearly blinded myself with shock. She was actually Su Anrong's Ghost Servant! After just a few days apart, she had become even more beautiful. What on earth was happening?
Should I jump up and confront this third party or hide under the covers and wait for an opportunity?
No, no, no; it would be better to wait and see how Su Anrong would react to this beauty.
I pretended to be asleep, but my eyes:
That face was unmistakably the same as the Ghost Servant I had just seen.
I recalled her words warning me not to think about getting off this vehicle, and the sound of knocking on the bed. It seemed everything had been premeditated.
Su Anrong swiftly pulled the window shut. "You three, go back to your own beds and sleep. No matter what happens, do not get up, do not make a sound, do not open your eyes unless I call you. But you must be sure it is me calling you before you get up."
Gao Lele and Fang Xiaonan were confused. "Why?"
I hurriedly pushed them back to their beds. "Don't ask so many questions, just do as you're told. If you want to stay alive, you must follow these instructions."
Although I didn't know the purpose behind this, it was rare for Su Anrong to be so serious. Since she said it, it was best to listen to her.
Once I confirmed that Gao Lele and Fang Xiaonan were back in their beds, I returned to my own, every nerve in my body taut, my palms starting to sweat.
