I was a bit reluctant, but Gao Lele and Fang Xiaonan both said in unison, "It's a deal."
They seemed so confident. Could it be that there really was something terrifying about Room 308?
In the afternoon, Zhang Mengdi showed no concern for the evening's events. Instead, she happily began to experiment with makeup and outfit combinations. I was somewhat hesitant to see Lin Xiuyu because I still didn't know whether he was human or ghost. Regardless of what he was, he certainly wasn't anything good.
"Rice, can you help me go to class today?"
"No way. Daddy said I can only help you when he asks me to. Mommy, if you don't study hard now, be careful you might end up doing manual labor in the future."
Zhang Mengdi looked stunning after finishing her makeup. In a place like the Foreign Language Department, where beautiful girls were everywhere, she should be more than just the Class Flower. Just look at her shy yet smiling eyes, her delicate little nose, and her cherry-red lips—jealousy-inducing.
Fortunately, when God opens a window, He also closes a door. The moment she spoke, her beauty and charm diminished significantly.
"Look at me! Do I look good dressed like this? Can I win over Egg Brother?" She seemed to have forgotten that just an hour ago the three of us had teamed up to push her out and now she was treating us like her close friends.
Gao Lele continued to file her nails while teasingly saying, "No matter how pretty you dress up, you can't compare to being an egg. It's not Egg Brother for nothing; you need to turn into an egg to be paired with him. Got it?"
Fang Xiaonan laughed in agreement, "Exactly! If you become an egg, then you two can be together."
Zhang Mengdi stomped her foot in frustration. "Wheat, what do you have to say?"
"They're right," I nodded without hesitation. Of course, I was on Lele and Xiaonan's side.
Zhang Mengdi lightly hummed, "I know you are all jealous of my beauty. Hmph, I'm going to grab a seat; today I want to sit in the front row."
"Little brat," Gao Lele said, putting down her nail clippers and shooting a disdainful look at Zhang Mengdi.
The afternoon class eventually arrived.
As soon as I entered the classroom, Zhang Mengdi was already in the front row, patting the only empty seat next to her and calling for me with all her might. I pretended not to see; I wanted to sit in the last row, as far away from Lin Xiuyu as possible.
Gao Lele walked over to Zhang Mengdi with her textbook held high and plopped down beside her. "Zhang Mengdi, thanks for saving me a seat!"
"This is for Wheat."
"Wheat, are you sitting here?" Gao Lele asked knowingly.
"No, I'm sitting in the back." With class about to start and Lin Xiuyu still not here, I quickly found a corner seat and sat down.
Zhang Mengdi seemed like she wanted to say something else, but Gao Lele whispered a few words in her ear, and the two of them began to glare at each other.
I watched from the back, amused. These two women were like powder kegs; they ignited at the slightest spark. Their fight would probably be more exciting than my mom battling a ghost.
Sure enough, as soon as Zhang Mengdi's long nails reached for Gao Lele's face, Gao Lele swiftly removed the headband from her hair. Zhang Mengdi was furious and grabbed Gao Lele's textbook, ready to tear it apart.
"Wow, so cool!" A wave of cheers erupted in the classroom.
Lin Xiuyu walked in wearing a sharp suit. He had an impressive physique, and you could imagine any outfit hanging on him, as if he were a moving clothes hanger. Most importantly, he possessed an innate sense of military discipline; his features were chiseled, his expression blank. If he were to wear a uniform, he would be a striking green flower in the army.
Gao Lele and Zhang Mengdi immediately ceased their chatter, gazing infatuatedly toward the door. Zhang Mengdi instantly turned shy, her voice like flowing water drowned out by the girls' screams of "Teacher Lin."
"Quiet." Lin Xiuyu showed no sign of being moved by the girls' infatuation; he simply uttered two words, and the classroom fell silent. Everyone obediently returned to their seats.
The specialized class was small, consisting only of students from our Class 1404. Previously, Teacher Wang knew every one of us by name, so even calling out names was unnecessary.
According to tradition, the first thing every new specialized teacher does is take attendance.
I buried my head behind my book, hoping that Lin Xiuyu wouldn’t notice me.
But unexpectedly, as he stood at the podium and scanned all of us with his deep gaze, it surprisingly lingered on me for a moment.
Fang Xiaonan nudged me with her hand. "Wheat, is Teacher Lin looking at you?"
"Shh, don’t talk," I quickly signaled her.
"But he's already walking over to you."
"What?" I jumped up in shock, causing the entire class to turn their attention toward me. However, Lin Xiuyu was not actually coming toward me.
Fang Xiaonan, you liar.
But this time, Lin Xiuyu really did start walking toward me.
Rice crouched on my desk, suddenly leaping up to grab a banana peel from a classmate's desk and throwing it at Lin Xiuyu's feet. Lin Xiuyu, who had been strutting like a model amidst the gasps of the girls, unexpectedly stepped on the banana peel and fell backward with a "whoosh."
Rice couldn't get close to him but could throw things over, so he quickly grabbed another classmate's cup and poured the water onto the floor behind Lin Xiuyu.
If Lin Xiuyu fell like that, his handsome image would truly be ruined.
Even I couldn't help but feel a bit anxious for him.
Everyone looked on in horror at the sudden appearance of the banana peel and water. Fang Xiaonan even grabbed my hand in fear. "Wheat, is there a ghost again?"
The fear was only momentary; Fang Xiaonan's gaze was soon drawn back to Lin Xiuyu. After all, he was no ordinary person. When he was just a few inches from hitting the ground, he managed to stand up straight. Even street dancers probably couldn't match his skill.
The girls finally relaxed, but the next second,
Fang Xiaonan seemed to find some courage out of nowhere and shouted, "Teacher Lin, watch out!" as she lunged toward him. Unfortunately, just as Lin Xiuyu had managed to regain his balance, he was knocked down onto the puddle of water.
Since it was already afternoon and the classroom hadn't been cleaned yet, the water mixed with dust splashed all over Lin Xiuyu's back.
His face instantly darkened.
For some reason, seeing Lin Xiuyu like this brought me unexpected joy. That silly girl, Fang Xiaonan.
Rice happily stood beside me. "Mommy, Daddy will definitely be very happy to see this."
Zhang Mengdi couldn't sit still any longer; she stormed over and pulled Fang Xiaonan away angrily, rushing to help Lin Xiuyu. "Teacher Lin, are you okay?"
Lin Xiuyu deftly dodged her hand and stood up, feeling quite displeased with the dampness on his back. However, in front of dozens of classmates, he maintained a facade of calmness. "It's fine, I hope I didn't make a fool of myself," he said.
Although some wanted to laugh, none dared to do so.
It was his first time attending our class, and he must have felt like dying from embarrassment.
When I looked up, I caught Lin Xiuyu's gaze, which was filled with intense hostility directed at me. It made my heart race; after all, it wasn't my fault. Why did he look like he wanted to devour me?
He didn’t approach me again but returned to the podium and began to remove his suit. One button at a time, he unfastened it.
Around the room, I could hear the sound of girls swallowing nervously.
Underneath, he wore a white shirt, and even through the thin fabric, I could faintly see the outline of his muscles. There’s a saying: “A skinny person in clothes becomes a muscular man without them,” and that seemed to describe Lin Xiuyu perfectly.
Calmly, he placed his suit on the chair, unbuttoned the cuffs of his shirt, rolled up his sleeves, and after introducing himself in perfect American English, he began to take attendance.
“Jiang Chengzhi.”
“Present.”
“Fang Xiaonan.”
“Present.”
As he continued to point, his brow furrowed. This subtle movement captivated the girls, yet no one knew why he suddenly displayed such an expression.
Until, quite reluctantly, he uttered a name:
"Consort."
Amidst the uproarious laughter of his classmates, Zhang Mengdi exclaimed loudly, "Your servant is here, Your Majesty."
Lin Xiuyu couldn't help but glance at her a few more times, puzzled as she asked, "Is your surname Ai and your given name Fei?"
Before Zhang Mengdi could respond, she had already become the target of the girls' ire.
Gao Lele said unhappily, "Teacher Lin, her name is Zhang Mengdi. She deliberately changed it on the roster for you."
Lin Xiuyu probably didn't expect to be so outmaneuvered on her first day of class. Like a monkey being toyed with, she slammed the roster down on the desk and angrily declared, "Youmai Vegetable, come here and take attendance!"
