"Honey, we really are becoming more in sync. You can tell just by looking at me that I don't want to explain."
Su Anrong's words nearly drove me mad. After living for over a thousand years, he still couldn't understand a woman's heart. When I said I didn't want him to explain, it was obvious that I wanted him to explain!
It was simply impossible to communicate.
Rice stood by, looking bewildered, quickly choosing sides and firmly standing with me to criticize his dad. "Daddy, if Mommy doesn't want to hear it, does that mean you won't say anything? Mommy has been worried about you; she thought you were dead and was crying so hard she could barely breathe! Yet you treat her like this? You're disappointing me!"
Wait a minute, something's off. When did I cry so hard that I could barely breathe? Rice, can you at least draft your lies?
Rice secretly winked at me, signaling me to stay quiet, but Su Anrong was already aware of everything happening.
Su Anrong looked at his son with a mix of amusement and exasperation. "Son, you really need to work on your habit of enjoying the chaos."
"I won't change! Hurry up and explain to Mommy!"
"This situation is too complicated to explain; I'm still your son." Just as Su Anrong began to speak, we noticed Rice had dashed over to Teacher Wang's side.
He squatted next to Teacher Wang's bed, curiously staring into her eyes. "Daddy, Mommy, look! Her eyes are moving so fast!"
I rushed over. "Oh my gosh, that's a bit too fast! Doctor, doctor, come quickly!"
The doctor arrived promptly and began administering emergency care to Teacher Wang. After a while, the doctor looked at us disapprovingly. "What did you do? The patient just got startled."
Startled.
Oh my goodness! We were so engrossed in talking with Rice that we completely forgot others couldn't see him. Teacher Wang must have felt scared from the beginning but couldn't voice it.
I quickly apologized to the doctor, snatched Su Anrong's wallet, and dashed out. "I'll go pay!"
When I returned after paying, I found Rice telling jokes to Teacher Wang. My heart tightened suddenly. Could it be that she could understand Rice now? That would mean she could see him.
At that moment, Su Anrong was nowhere to be found.
I rushed over. "Rice, what are you doing? She can hear you?" As I spoke, I glanced at Teacher Wang. Her face showed no expression, and her eyes were completely still. My heart sank to the bottom.
This is bad; something must have gone wrong.
"Mommy, I'm telling her jokes! She's all alone here," Rice replied cheerfully.
"What about your daddy? Where did he go?"
"Daddy took her soul out for a bit; he'll be back soon. I'm talking to her spirit right now."
"Soul and spirit?"
"Yeah! Daddy brought her soul out, so we can talk to her. Mommy, you can talk to her too! But her spirit is really sad; she can only hear me but can't say anything. If you want to communicate with her, you need to find Daddy." Rice looked up at the air and said, "Aunt Wang, don't be sad. Actually, dying can be nice. Look how free I am now!"
I was at a loss for words. "Rice, how many times have I told you? Only you think dying is good. For us humans, life is only once; once you're dead, that's it. Please stop saying such things."
"You can be reborn after you die! Right now, Aunt Wang is all alone in the hospital and can't talk to anyone. Her body hurts a lot; isn't it better to just die?"
"Shut up!" I interrupted sharply. "Don't say another word."
The nurse had just reminded us to take good care of Teacher Wang and not let her have any thoughts of self-harm. Yet here was Rice insisting that dying was good.
Rice looked a bit dejected after my outburst, pouting slightly before finally softening up. "I won't say anything more. Mommy, please don't be mad; I'm afraid you'll accidentally get so upset that you might hurt yourself."
"Isn't it said that children are little angels sent by heaven? To me, he seems like a little devil. Every time he tries to comfort me, his words make me want to die."
"Where did your daddy take Teacher Wang's soul?" I decided to change the subject.
"Probably to the rooftop, Mommy. I'll take you there."
I felt a bit uneasy about Teacher Wang, but I really wanted to have a proper conversation with her and find out the truth about her situation, so I followed Rice, making sure to close the door behind us.
Su Anrong was indeed on the rooftop, but he wasn't alone.
Standing next to him was Teacher Wang's soul, and this time I could see her. The key issue was that even Black and White Impermanence had shown up.
After Su Anrong said a few words to Teacher Wang, she nodded with a smile, and then I saw Black and White Impermanence each place a hand on her shoulder.
"Wait, wait, wait!" I sprinted over. "What are you doing?"
Black and White Impermanence stopped. White Impermanence looked much better than the last time I saw her. With a blank expression, she said, "She's dead now, so of course we're taking her to the underworld."
"That's impossible! I just saw her alive in her hospital room!"
"She was alive just now, but now she's dead. Haven't you already left her hospital room?"
It had to be Su Anrong's doing; how could it happen so quickly?
I glared at Su Anrong. "Was it you?" This time, I couldn't even be bothered to call his name. He was getting too reckless; did he really think he could decide others' lives and deaths?
To my accusation, Su Anrong pretended to look hurt. I wouldn't fall for it again; no matter how charming he was, I wouldn't be swayed by his looks anymore.
"Wife, you're overestimating my abilities."
"You misunderstand, Youmai Vegetable. I was originally a damned person, but my soul is locked within my body, unable to die. I can only exist as a living corpse, suffering day by day on the hospital bed. That feeling is truly worse than death," Teacher Wang suddenly spoke, leaving me stunned.
"What do you mean by a damned person?"
"It means my lifespan has ended, but the Ghost Messengers cannot take my soul away. I don't know why this is happening. Fortunately, your husband helped draw my soul out; otherwise, I would have to endure torment in the mortal realm. Youmai Vegetable, thank you for coming to see me. You are a good child and very smart. Study hard, and you will achieve great things in the future."
Teacher Wang, true to her nature, didn’t forget to say these words even at such a moment. After she finished speaking, Black and White Impermanence began to escort her away.
"Wait! I still have questions!"
Black and White Impermanence glanced at Su Anrong, who nodded. They finally stopped, and Black Wuchang coldly said, "Just one question."
I couldn't care less about him and hurriedly asked, "Teacher Wang, please tell me, did you really have a stroke or were you framed?"
Teacher Wang smiled at me. "How could a stroke be framed? I really fell ill."
Then she vanished before my eyes along with Black and White Impermanence.
I stood there for a long time, unable to react. This shouldn't be happening; how could she have had a stroke at not even forty years old?
Su Anrong came up behind me, wanting to embrace me, but I ignored him and quickly ran back to Teacher Wang's hospital room, only to see the doctors lifting her body onto a stretcher and covering it with a white cloth.
She worked diligently throughout her life, humbly serving others, yet ultimately left this world all alone.
The last image of her I saw was always smiling; perhaps for her, as Rice said, dying wasn’t so bad after all.
I am not a cold-hearted person, but neither am I particularly passionate. I am stingy with my tears and rarely cry for anyone other than family. However, seeing Teacher Wang's body being taken away made my tears flow uncontrollably.
“Su Anrong, can we see her boyfriend now?”
Su Anrong held me tightly this time; his body was cool, but at that moment, he became my only support.
However, the words he spoke made me even sadder: “Her boyfriend has been dead for nearly twenty years; he has long since reincarnated.”
Upon hearing this, I felt an overwhelming sadness in my heart and couldn't help but cry out loud, my voice echoing painfully. I cried with such intensity that I had never experienced before.
Just then, a voice came from behind me, “Wheat, why are you crying like that? Did Teacher Wang die? Hurry up and come over; Egg Brother wants to see you.”
