"She's a ghost!" If ghosts can't even recognize each other, I'm truly at a loss.
"Nonsense! I've never seen a ghost with a physical form."
"That's just your ignorance. If you don't believe me, why not test her?" As soon as I said that, I regretted it; I still didn't know what abilities Siyuan had after becoming a ghost.
But the other ghosts became excited. A young female ghost with colorful hair said, "We can all possess someone. Why don't you give it a try?"
Possess.
I suddenly had a bad feeling. I was the only human here; if they were going to possess someone, it would definitely be me.
While I was willing to cooperate with Chen Siyuan to prove her identity, possessing a human could cause significant harm. Plus, even if we proved she was a ghost, we wouldn't gain anything from it.
I quickly said, "Wait! Is there no reward or punishment for playing this game?"
The Middle-Aged Male Ghost replied, "Of course there is! If you guess wrong, we'll eat you piece by piece."
All the ghosts licked their lips in unison, as if I were a delicious piece of meat already served to them.
Su Anrong calmly took over my words and asked, "What about the punishment?"
"We're definitely going to win."
"It's too early to talk about winning or losing. Since we're playing a game, we need rules. If you win, you'll get a reward; if you lose, you have to agree to do something for us. Do you dare?"
The Middle-Aged Male Ghost jumped up and said, "A man can be killed but not humiliated! What do I have to fear? In my past life, I was part of a gang—just look at the scar on my face!"
"Pfft! You probably just got your head stuck under a car and got crushed. What gang?" scoffed a Middle-Aged Female Ghost.
Watching them bicker among themselves gave me the feeling of being at a rural seed-spitting contest. Annoyed, I slammed the table and said, "Do you agree or not?"
"Of course we agree! After all, you're going to be eaten by us soon."
It was a beautiful thought; with Su Anrong around, he wouldn't let his wife fall into the hands of these dirty mouths.
"Alright, Siyuan, come possess me," I said, opening my arms and making myself available.
Siyuan looked at me in confusion. "I can't."
Shouldn't this be a basic skill for a ghost? How could she not know? It was always portrayed that way on television; as soon as a ghost approached someone, they would just swoop right in.
I quickly waved her down. "Come down, I'll teach you." It's just like drawing a gourd based on its shape.
Just as Chen Siyuan was about to come down, those ghosts blocked her and pointed at me. "You go up."
Ashi Ba should have anticipated that they would pull this trick. Now I was being treated like a monkey on display for their amusement.
Seeing my reluctance, the ghosts all burst into laughter. The more unwilling I was, the harder they laughed. It seemed that many humans enjoyed watching others suffer; the more pain, the more pleasure. It turned out ghosts were no different.
I glanced at Su Anrong; he gave me an encouraging look, signaling me not to be afraid.
I gritted my teeth and decided to go for it.
Amidst the cheers of the ghosts, I jumped onto the conference table and quietly said to Chen Siyuan, "Just listen to me later."
Siyuan nodded. I stood up and signaled for the ghosts to quiet down.
"Open your eyes wide and watch closely," I instructed her. "You just need to aim for my position and then crash into me with all your strength."
"Is that for real?" she whispered back, sounding a bit worried. "Wheat, can you really do this?"
"I'm not a ghost; of course I can't. I learned it from watching TV. Just give it a try."
I closed my eyes and clenched my teeth, waiting for her to possess me.
Chen Siyuan couldn't think of any other way and had no choice but to follow my lead. Taking a deep breath, she stepped back two paces and then charged at me with all her might.
"Ah!"
“Bang!”
Although I was mentally prepared, I was still knocked over, landing awkwardly on the ground. Chen Siyuan awkwardly helped me up and said, “That was useless.”
The ghosts around us stared at us in disbelief. The Middle-Aged Male Ghost exclaimed, “Are you two idiots?”
“You're the idiot!” I was already annoyed from being knocked down, and now I had to endure insults.
“Then you must be the con artists.” The middle-aged man’s expression suddenly changed as he began to laugh sinisterly. “How dare you trick us into thinking you’re ghosts? You’ve lost, ha ha ha!”
“You’ve lost!” the other ghosts echoed, all of them eyeing us menacingly.
“You’re overthinking it. That was just a warm-up,” Su Anrong appeared beside me out of nowhere, casting a cold glance at the ghosts below. Then he quietly said to me, “Hold your breath and let her take over.”
“Why didn’t you say so earlier?” I grumbled, feeling frustrated about being knocked down like that.
“I was just guessing; after all, no one has dared to possess you yet.”
“Is there any consequence to possessing me?” I suddenly became worried; wouldn’t that put Siyuan in danger?
“Yes, very serious consequences,” he said seriously in my ear. “I would kill her.”
“Hey, you two! It’s rude to whisper for so long in front of us!” a female ghost protested.
I quickly straightened up and decided to keep quiet.
Su Anrong stepped aside, clapped his hands, and addressed everyone: “We just did a warm-up exercise; now we’re starting for real.” He then made a gesture with his mouth, signaling me to remember to hold my breath.
I felt a bit nervous; if I got knocked down again, it would be incredibly embarrassing.
Siyuan retreated to Su Anrong’s position and nodded at me. I couldn’t think too much anymore; I just had to hold my breath and leave it to fate. Madoumaru's Death.
I heard the sound of rushing wind as Siyuan charged toward me.
It was over; if I didn't steady myself, I would likely end up crashing under the table.
Suddenly, I felt my limbs stiffen, as if time had come to a standstill. All I could see was Su Anrong's hand subtly moving, as if he were casting some kind of spell. Then time resumed its flow, and with the movement of the air, Siyuan suddenly "whooshed" into my body.
"Ha ha! I did it! I did it!" I exclaimed, nearly jumping up in joy as I spun around happily on the table.
But then I noticed that everyone, including Su Anrong, wore a grim expression; no one was smiling.
Then I saw her—Chen Siyuan—who had fallen behind me.
She had merely passed through my body; she hadn't crashed into me at all.
Why was this so difficult?
I quickly turned to face Su Anrong and winked at him, signaling him to think of a solution. This time, we were really in trouble.
Chen Siyuan got up from the ground and said helplessly, "Wheat, I'm sorry. I don't know what's going on either." Then she stood beside me. "Don't worry; even if everything turns to dust, I won't let them eat you."
Su Anrong walked over and calmly said, "If they want to eat you, there's no way you can stop them."
I glared at him angrily. "What do you mean?"
Su Anrong shrugged with a smile. "She can't stop them, but I can."
Making jokes at a time like this was simply infuriating.
This time, the ghosts didn't give us another chance. They all fell silent and expressed their excitement through action. Black mist began to rise from each ghost, accumulating more and more in the air and mixing together like rolling storm clouds.
Feeling cowardly, I leaned closer to Su Anrong. He glanced at the black mist above us and nonchalantly addressed the ghosts below, "This is your last chance. If you fail again this time, you can eat me too."
I quickly tugged at his sleeve. What was he saying? It was clear that we couldn't succeed again; if he got caught too, no one would come to save me.
The ghosts exchanged glances until finally, the Middle-Aged Male Ghost sneered and said, "You wish! We're not interested in you."
Su Anrong's face darkened, but the black mist above his head grew even darker, swirling like a pot of boiling black water. The presence of over ten spirits was not to be underestimated.
I glanced at Su Anrong with some concern. These spirits were truly foolish; even the two Lizard Spirits knew that consuming the skin of Rice could enhance their power. Su Anrong was their father—if they devoured him, their strength would surely increase even more.
Yet, they actually refused.
Suddenly, a fierce wind whipped around us, and the black mist danced overhead, becoming thicker and thicker.
With a "plop," something dripped onto my face. When I looked up in surprise, I was stunned to see it was raining. It was really raining! Were these spirits playing tricks on me? The black mist indeed gathered like storm clouds, capable of producing rain.
But soon, I sensed something was off within me. As the raindrops fell on my body, it felt as if something inside me was boiling and roaring in response to them.
