“Is the Spirit Doll still with you?” It was not Qiao Lianjiu who spoke, but Qiao Ziyuan. It seemed they had already met.
“Yes.”
I had barely uttered a word when Qiao Ziyuan anxiously interrupted me, “Tell him to prepare two taels of Dragon Tongue, ten jin of Soul Molding Water, and two qian of Golden Silk Flower. There are ten liang of Manjushahua by the Underworld River that haven’t wilted. I’ll head to your house right away, so send me your address.”
I quickly relayed her message to Rice. Rice responded readily, “Sure, Mom. But Golden Silk Flower is quite rare. I’ve asked my herbalist to cultivate it many times, but it has always failed. I haven’t checked with her this time yet. As for Manjushahua by the Underworld River, we might need Dad to help with that.”
I thought Su Anrong wouldn’t be willing and was considering how to persuade him, but before I could speak, he said, “Black and White Impermanence will come to collect Chen Siyuan’s soul today. I’ll ask them to bring it over.”
Well, that’s one way to make it clear to Black and White Impermanence that they can’t take Chen Siyuan away. Would Black and White Impermanence agree?
“Auntie, no need to come to my house; I’m still at the school gate. Where are you? I’ll come pick you up right away.”
“We’re already at the school gate.”
I looked up and saw Qiao Lianjiu coming out with a nearly transparent figure in tow. Siyuan’s arm had returned to her own body, and Qiao Ziyuan was anxiously protecting her as if afraid she would disappear at any moment.
Clearly, they had gone through some harrowing experience that I was unaware of.
I rushed over and helped them support Siyuan to the side of the car. “Zhang Mengdi, get down.”
“I don’t want to. There are exactly four of us; it fits perfectly,” Zhang Mengdi clung to the car unwilling to leave.
I bent down into the car and pulled her out. “I don’t like it so cramped; hurry up and get out.”
“Wheat, you’re being too cruel! Don’t leave me here alone!” Zhang Mengdi pouted as I dragged her out of the car, tears welling in her eyes.
Qiao Lianjiu and Qiao Ziyuan quickly placed Chen Siyuan’s soul into the car. Su Anrong reached out from the driver’s seat and pressed his hand against Chen Siyuan’s forehead. A faint light passed through her forehead into her body.
“She won’t be in danger for now, but she can’t hold on for long.”
Zhang Mengdi stared in shock. “Have you all gone crazy? What are you talking about?” It was clear from Zhang Mengdi's reaction that Siyuan had been reduced to just her soul; the Soul Molding Water had lost its effectiveness.
“You’d better not stay at school tonight.” I didn’t want to explain too much but felt compelled to give her a warning before getting into the car as Su Anrong drove away.
In the rearview mirror, Zhang Mengdi was stomping her feet in anger, but I was only worried about Chen Siyuan; I had no time to concern myself with her.
“Auntie, what happened to Siyuan?”
“Sigh, that foolish child. I thought she would have some kind of talisman for ghost-catching, but it turns out she went barehanded. It's already a stroke of luck that she managed to return with her soul intact,” Qiao Ziyuan sighed, a hint of guilt in her voice. “If I had known she was so earnest, I wouldn’t have let her go.”
“Auntie, you can’t blame yourself for this.” I turned around from the passenger seat and saw Qiao Lianjiu sitting in the backseat, his expression complicated as if he had something to say.
Siyuan's spirit was still very weak, leaning against his shoulder. I had never seen her so vulnerable before. To be honest, she and Qiao Lianjiu were quite a match.
However, after receiving a message like the one from Qiao Lianjiu, I found it difficult to bring up Siyuan’s situation directly.
Wait a minute, I think I just saw something significant.
I widened my eyes and looked closely; indeed, I wasn't mistaken—the Qiao Family ring was actually on Siyuan's hand. Although Qiao Lianjiu sat there stiffly, his eyes were clearly filled with concern.
Could this mean that things had worked out?
Siyuan, oh Siyuan, you must pull through this. Once you do, you can take care of your mother in peace.
When we returned home and opened the door, Rice rushed over to me and cried loudly, “Waaah! Mommy, I'm so sorry!”
I was taken aback and quickly asked him, “What happened?”
“I only have one coin for the Golden Silk Flower; I really can't get another one! Waaah!”
Once inside, Rice continued to wail uncontrollably. I didn’t know how to comfort him; it was so annoying that Qiao Ziyuan finally spoke up. “It’s fine if you’re short on the Golden Silk Flower; we can replace it with something else.”
Rice immediately stopped crying and pouted, “You bad grandma! Why didn’t you say so earlier? You made me shed so many precious tears!”
Qiao Ziyuan instructed Qiao Lianjiu to take care of Chen Siyuan and said unhappily, “Am I that old? Why are you calling me grandma?”
“My mommy calls you Auntie; of course I should call you grandma! Otherwise, should I call you Great-Grandma?”
"You must be at least in your twenties, nearing thirty, and you dare to call me Aunt? Bring her out, and I promise I won't kill her."
Veins throbbed on my forehead as I stood there, exasperated. "I am her mother! Go ahead and kill me!"
"You've only been around for a few years, and your son is already this big," she retorted.
"Mom, what are you doing here?" Qiao Lianjiu finally snapped after remaining silent the entire way.
Qiao Ziyuan paused for a moment, then smirked knowingly at me, winking before coldly asking, "What do you think I'm here for? Look at my memory; I forgot while we were chatting."
She was clearly trying to provoke Qiao Lianjiu, but Rice couldn't see it. He smugly said, "See? You even admitted you're getting old, so of course I should call you Grandma!"
Qiao Ziyuan was momentarily at a loss for words, having shot herself in the foot.
Qiao Lianjiu frowned. "You said you could save Chen Siyuan."
"Oh, I remember now; I did say that. But you gave her the ring and still refuse to marry her. That puts me in an awkward position," Qiao Ziyuan said, running her fingers through her hair with a troubled expression. "You know our family's rules; we only deal with ghosts catching ghosts. We never talk about saving them—unless it's a special case, like saving our own ghosts or something."
Aunt Qiao, are you trying to force a marriage? I thought the hardest part about Siyuan was dealing with Qiao Lianjiu's mother, but this was turning out to be quite unexpected.
If I had known this would happen, I wouldn't have waited until the last day to find her; I should have gone earlier.
Qiao Lianjiu's face shifted from pale to red like a neon light as his mother spoke.
I was grateful enough that he was willing to let Siyuan wear the ring first; I didn't want to pressure him too much. So I changed the subject. "Auntie, you just mentioned using something else instead of Golden Silk Flower. What is it?"
"You."
"What?" I pointed at my own nose in disbelief. "You mean me?"
"Yes! Aren't you a Supreme Spirit Tool? The Golden Silk Flower is an exceptional item among Yin objects—very rare and considered a top-tier tonic for Yin spirits, similar to a resurrection pill in the human world. I don't know how exceptional your Supreme Spirit Tool is, but generally speaking, if used properly, it can have effects similar to the Golden Silk Flower."
"So you're saying I can save Siyuan?"
"Yes."
"Then what are you hesitating for? Hurry up! What do you need me to do? I will cooperate completely." I quickly rolled up my sleeves. "Do you need to draw blood or something?"
"We need to use you as a Medicine Vessel."
"How do we make a Medicine Vessel?"
"To put it simply, we treat you as a spiritual tool, an instrument. Then we immerse the soul that needs healing in this vessel and add other medicines to assist in the process, achieving the healing effect." Qiao Ziyuan explained while observing my reaction.
As long as it can save Siyuan, I'm willing to do anything. I quickly said, "So you mean to let Siyuan possess me? But she has tried several times before without success."
"Her soul is now very weak and lacks sufficient spiritual energy to possess anyone. We can only forcefully push her into your body. Soaking for a day and night should be fine."
"Alright, then once Manjushahua brings it over, we can start."
"I disagree." Su Anrong returned after parking the car. Hearing our conversation, she angrily walked over. "Without my permission, you are not allowed to be used as a Medicine Vessel by anyone."
