"Long time no see, I've missed you dearly." The man turned around, and I was so startled that I dared not step forward.
This man's face was truly unique. If he didn't have two eyes, a nose, and a mouth, I would have thought I was looking at two Steamed Buns.
Listening to his voice, I had imagined he would be a handsome man; even his silhouette seemed appealing. But who would have thought there could be someone in the world whose face resembled a Steamed Bun?
Garlic, did you intentionally bring such an ugly friend to highlight your own attractiveness?
The man's gaze passed over Su Anrong and landed on me. Although his expression was blank, as he spoke, the spiraled flesh on his face tightened and relaxed in a rather comical manner.
"Congratulations, you've even put on the wedding dress."
Su Anrong grabbed his arm and pulled him up from the sofa. "You promised not to just show up at my house. Get out."
"Garlic, who is he?" Despite his unappealing appearance, he was still a guest, so I put on a gracious hostess demeanor and asked, "Your friend?"
"Not at all."
"Yes."
They both answered simultaneously, but their responses were completely different. Su Anrong frowned and said, "When did I become friends with you?"
"We've always been friends; have you forgotten?"
"I never befriend Steamed Buns."
Pfft, Garlic, do you really have to be so blunt?
The man's Steamed Bun face instantly turned green. He stood up, walked a few steps toward the door, then turned back and said in a deep voice, "Qi Zunshang. You misuse your power and abuse your authority; that's one thing. But to abandon your post for an extended period and act recklessly—ignoring warnings and excessively interfering in mortal affairs—then even attempting to threaten the King of Hell to do your bidding? The heavenly court has sent me to warn you: if you do this again, the heavenly rules will not spare you."
I stared at him in disbelief. He was actually a celestial being! Shouldn't gods possess ethereal beauty and transcendence? How could he look like this? If we were to dine together, the scene would be unimaginable.
As it turned out, what should have been a serious statement coming from him somehow sounded absurdly humorous.
But thinking about what he said and recalling the King of Hell's warning about the anger of the gods, I couldn't help but wonder if this was indeed the wrath of the divine.
I couldn't help but worry about Su Anrong. Previously, Rice mentioned that he had been invited for tea, which probably meant he was summoned by the gods as well. Looking at Su Anrong, it seemed like he held some reverence for the divine, even though I didn't understand what made Steamed Bun's kind of god so fearsome.
As soon as Steamed Bun left the sofa, Rice quickly came down to help lift my heavy skirt. "Mommy, walk slowly, don't trip!" His lively and adorable demeanor was a stark contrast to the timid look he had just shown on the sofa.
Su Anrong dismissed Steamed Bun's words coldly, saying, "Are you done? If you're done, then leave." It was clearly a dismissal, showing that he didn't regard the gods with much respect.
Steamed Bun's face puffed up in anger. "You, you, you! Just because I don't look good doesn't mean you can discriminate against me!"
"In this society that values looks, of course I can discriminate against you. Go back and tell your Supreme Deity that if there's something to say, he should come personally instead of sending some ugly minions who scare my wife and child."
"Qi Zunshang, when did I ever scare your wife and child?"
As soon as Steamed Bun finished speaking, Rice immediately chimed in, "You just scared me so much that I didn't dare to speak!"
Steamed Bun almost choked on his own breath; Rice was truly an excellent actor, always ready to improvise alongside the main character.
He was Daddy's good helper, Mommy's little cotton-padded jacket, and the family's versatile little warrior.
In the end, Steamed Bun left while coughing up blood and crying, "I'm going to tell my Supreme Deity that I never want to serve your family again!"
Rice extended his hand for a high-five with me, and I had no choice but to comply.
"Yay! We won again!"
Su Anrong walked over with concern. "Honey, did he scare you?"
I wouldn't admit that I was frightened. Instead, I shifted the topic. "You should be more careful in the future; don’t let them find any dirt on you. If the gods really get angry, it could lead to very bad consequences for you."
"The worst consequence would be taking you away from me, but they wouldn't dare do that."
He looked very confident, but I felt a bit worried. If even Sun Wukong could be suppressed under the Five Finger Mountain by Buddha, then Su Anrong might not be as formidable.
With so many deities around, there must be someone who can keep him in check.
“Mommy, don’t worry. Even if Daddy leaves you, I will protect you. I won’t let anyone bully you,” Rice said firmly, patting his little chest earnestly.
Su Anrong gently tapped his head. “Who said I would leave your mommy? Even if the sky falls, don’t think I would leave. Unless your mommy wants to go herself.”
“Mommy, would you want to leave?” Rice looked up at me with a mix of nervousness and expectation.
For a moment, I couldn’t think of any words to deny it. However, my brief silence seemed to him like a negative answer.
Tears filled Rice’s dark eyes as he stubbornly asked again, “Mommy, would you want to leave?”
“Son, be good. Don’t make it hard for Mommy. She has her own plans,” Su Anrong said, clearly feeling down as his voice turned hoarse, yet he still comforted Rice.
In that instant, I suddenly felt like I owed them so much.
I reached out to touch Rice’s head, the back of his neck, and his little cheeks, smiling as I said, “How could that be? Of course I won’t leave you.”
“What about Daddy? Would you leave Daddy?”
Rice, could you ask any more directly?
I could clearly see the smile in Su Anrong’s eyes, but Rice kept pressing me for an answer.
“Of course not.” If I answered yes, Rice would surely cry again.
“Daddy, did you hear that? Mommy won’t leave you!” Rice happily jumped into Su Anrong’s arms. “We can finally live together happily as a family!”
“What are you wearing? Some ancient wedding dress?” Suddenly, a figure appeared at the door.
"Mom, why are you back so early?"
"Someone bought all our vegetables in one go today, so we finished up early," my mother called out to my dad while changing her shoes. "Honey, come here quickly! Wheat is already wearing a wedding dress and hasn’t told us!"
My dad rushed in excitedly, not even bothering to change his shoes. "Wheat, where did you get such a beautiful dress? Let me see!"
"Dad, I'm just trying it on for someone else. It's not mine."
As soon as I finished speaking, Su Anrong chimed in, "Dad, Mom, this is the wedding dress I made for Wheat myself. Are you satisfied? If not, I can make some changes or even create a new one."
My mother's eyes lit up as she gazed at me. "Satisfied? Of course! I've never seen such a beautiful wedding dress on TV before! Wheat, your hair looks like a bird's nest. I've been telling you since you were little that girls should know how to style their hair. You never listen to me. Come here; let me fix it for you."
"Mom, I styled Wheat's hair," Su Anrong interjected.
My mother was taken aback but then smiled. "For a boy to style hair like this is already quite impressive. But it does look a bit too wild; let's keep it low-key."
"Mom's right; I'll listen to you."
"What a good child! Where did we find such a wonderful son-in-law?" My mother sighed happily while fixing my hair.
I squirmed uncomfortably. "Mom, what are you doing? I already said it's just for trying on; there's no need to style my hair."
My mother gave my head a light tap with the comb. "What nonsense are you talking about? Who wears a wedding dress and then takes it off? You already have children; it's time to hold the wedding ceremony! Since you're wearing the dress today and your dad and I finished work early, let's make sure this wedding goes smoothly. Honey, call our relatives and friends; we’re taking tomorrow off to host the guests."
"Dad, don’t call them! This is forcing me into marriage!"
"What do you mean 'forcing'? Who taught you to speak like that? You need to remember that you're already a married woman. Youyu is old enough; if you lie about your age, he should be starting kindergarten by now. Do you want people to think you had an illegitimate child?"
I bit my lip, wanting to argue that who knows if this child is mine, but then I remembered the lies I had told my mother before. If I exposed myself now, it would be embarrassing.
"Dad, Mom, this wedding dress seems unfinished. Look at the neckline; the stitching isn't very neat. Let's wait until I fix the dress before discussing the wedding; otherwise, people will laugh at the workmanship." Su Anrong kindly stepped in to save me from the situation.
After carefully examining the wedding dress, my mother said, "I don't see anything wrong with it. It's such a perfect wedding gown; altering it would only make it ill-fitting. Wheat, sit still and stop fidgeting. From now on, you're an adult. Don't waste your time, understand? Focus on being a good wife and raising children. I don't think you need to study anymore."
"Mom, how can you say that? It's not like you can't afford my tuition! How can you want me to drop out of school?" Even though my grades weren't great, it didn't mean I wanted to quit.
"Alright, alright, I was just saying that casually. Don't get too worked up; tomorrow is when you should be excited."
While my mother was earnestly trying to persuade me, my father was busy notifying relatives and friends. I felt like a little sweet potato being pushed into the fire by my own parents.
Su Anrong didn't say much either; after all, he was more excited than anyone else about the wedding.
That night, my mother wouldn't let me sleep, claiming it would ruin the hairstyle. Sometimes, she really surprised me; I never expected her to be so skilled at both ancient hairstyles and makeup. She handled everything with ease.
Under her supervision, I ended up sitting in the chair and dozing off for the entire night.
The next day at the wedding, I was completely exhausted. On top of that, the heavy wedding gown had weighed down on me all night, pushing me to the brink of collapse.
However, on the day of the wedding, a series of unexpected events unfolded.
