I wonder if anyone has ever experienced the feeling of being suddenly surrounded by onlookers, much like visiting an animal sanctuary where a few rare creatures are on display. Dozens of eyes fixate on you, observing your every move, even the rhythm of your breathing is scrutinized, creating a sense of affirmation.
My hands hung limply at my sides, and I felt a bit breathless. It wasn't fear of being watched; rather, it was the sight of Chu Fan slowly approaching from across the way.
His gaze landed on me, devoid of the familiar warmth I had imagined. Instead, it was piercingly cold, as if he were looking at an enemy.
A pang shot through my heart as I recalled Li Li's words; they were likely true.
"Fan." Li Li, with her keen eyes, spotted Chu Fan and fluttered into his arms like a little butterfly. "Why did you take so long to get here? Someone bullied me just now."
"Who dares to bully my woman?" Chu Fan leaned down in front of everyone and kissed Li Li. Then his gaze swept across the crowd, making his intentions clear. "Anxin, was it you?"
"It was me. It has nothing to do with Anxin." Lin You stepped forward, positioning herself in front of me with her chin held high. "Chu Fan, are you even a man? Abandoning Anxin is one thing, but why add insult to injury? What curse did Anxin cast on you? You were the one who pursued her; now you're ready to sever ties? Have you considered whether Anxin can handle this?"
"Lin You, you and Anxin know exactly what you've done; some things don't need my reminder."
With that opening from Chu Fan, I couldn't shake the feeling that during the time Jun Chong occupied his body, he might have known everything all along but felt powerless to argue against Jun Chong's overwhelming strength.
"What do you mean?" Lin You didn't understand and pressed further. "Are you saying you—"
"Ghost?" Chu Fan narrowed his eyes and smiled back at Lin You, cutting off her words with silence.
"Fan, don't waste time with them. Let's go! Mom said she made dinner for us today! She said she bought me a lot of things!"
"Yeah, let's go!"
Chu Fan wrapped an arm around Li Li and walked toward me as if to make a statement. My mind struggled to process everything happening around me; I wanted to move but found myself unable to do so.
As Chu Fan passed by me, a voice floated into my ear, "Anxin, I once asked you to save me, but you didn't. I will settle this score properly. Jun Chong is the best outcome."
I was taken aback; Chu Fan had already walked far away.
Staring at his retreating figure, I struggled to process what had just happened. The onlookers had dispersed, and Lin You quickly rushed to my side, wrapping her arms around me.
"Anxin, I know you're hurting, but it's okay. There must be a way to resolve the Ghost Marriage. I won't let anything happen to you."
Feeling the warmth from my good friend, I nodded. "I know you're worried about me, but I'm fine. This Chu Fan is not Jun Chong, which is why he is with Li Li."
"What?" Lin You released me, her eyes wide. "Not Jun Chong? Then who is he?"
The quiet Molin suddenly spoke up, "The real Chu Fan."
Lin You looked as if her jaw might drop. She abruptly grabbed my hand and Molin's, quickly leading us to a secluded corner of the school.
This was the back slope of the school, a place usually frequented only by couples, making it quite peaceful.
"What on earth is going on?" Lin You panted, her face flushed as she held my hand and spoke rapidly. "I heard this morning that Chu Fan was with Li Li. At first, I didn't believe it, but then I saw them kiss right in front of me! Chu Fan has completely changed; he even kissed other girls who like him. He's nothing like before! I thought he had abandoned you for good and confronted Li Li. You have to tell me what's happening!"
Faced with Lin You's concern, I fought back tears and recounted what had happened with Jun Chong. To my surprise, upon hearing this, Lin You hugged me tightly again and comforted me by patting my back. "Don't worry; Jun Chong will be fine. Our priority now is to find out why Chu Fan has changed like this. Otherwise, when Jun Chong returns without a body, what will we do?"
"Jun Chong used Chu Fan's body because of something I said. If necessary, we can find another body; after all, I'm just a woman abandoned by Chu Fan."
I spoke lightly, but Lin You's face turned red as she tightly grasped my hand. "Anxin, don't say that. If you want to cry, just let it out. I'll always be here for you."
"Alright, save your girl talk for later; let's focus on the important matters now."
Molin impatiently interrupted our conversation and sat down on the grass. He had been silent until now, and I thought he was just being polite. But seeing the serious expression on his face made me realize it was not what I had assumed, so I quickly asked, "Did you notice something? Is that person really Chu Fan?"
"I've never encountered Chu Fan before, but from the feeling he gives off, it's almost certain," Molin explained. "A body has a soul, and each soul gradually merges with its body as it grows. The essence of the soul leaves a mark on the body, and I sensed that their essences were the same."
"So he must be Chu Fan without a doubt." I sat down on the grass as well, pondering Molin's words. Suddenly, I said, "I think he definitely knows about Jun Chong occupying his body; otherwise, he wouldn't have said what he did earlier. Since he claims I've cursed him and then ended up with Li Li after waking up, I can't help but feel like he's come back for revenge."
"Wait a minute." Lin You suddenly interjected. "Anxin, you think Chu Fan is back for revenge, but the Chu Fan I know isn't like that. Maybe we weren't familiar enough before, but if he wanted revenge, wouldn't it be better for him to lead you into a trap step by step? Instead of pushing you out in front of everyone to face criticism, which seems more like revenge on the surface but feels more like a woman's usual tactic. Also, after Li Li returned from her trip abroad, she seemed to have changed completely. I'm certain that Chu Fan's actions are closely related to Li Li."
Lin You's analysis was spot on. Both Molin and I chose to remain silent. Molin fiddled with a blade of grass, bending it and straightening it again, his brow furrowed as if deep in thought. Suddenly he looked up with an enlightened expression. "So that's how it is."
Lin You and I were startled and turned to him. "What happened?"
"That Chu Fan has a heavy aura of yin energy. I didn't speak earlier to avoid drawing his attention," Molin began to explain gradually. "Normally, when someone’s soul returns to their body, people would usually expose them to sunlight or use mugwort for bathing and consume things that replenish yang energy. But he is surrounded by an overwhelming presence of yin energy. Plus, Anxin, you mentioned that Chu Fan had relations with Li Li before; I suspect that was likely a way to supplement his yin energy."
"What do you mean by that?"
Molin finally pulled out the little blade of grass he had been tormenting and brushed off his hands. "If he's trying to supplement his yin energy, it can only mean he's no longer human because humans don’t need that."
Seeing Lin You and me stunned into silence, Molin added, "But this is just my speculation. How about this: you two go check on Li Li while I investigate the lingering Curse energy. Although it's not much, I have ways to find out what it is."
"Okay."
We parted ways. For some reason, I suddenly didn't want to stay at Chu Fan's house anymore, so I went back to my old apartment since the landlord was someone I knew and hadn’t rented it out yet.
I had a dreamless night. As dawn broke, I smiled bitterly at the morning light and suddenly said, "Xiao You, it seems like aside from Jun Chong actively seeking me out in my dreams, I've never dreamed of him even once. Does that mean he doesn't really matter to me? But if he doesn't matter, why does my heart hurt so much?"
Lin You paused for a moment before tightly hugging me from behind. "Anxin, please don't say that; I'm really worried about you."
I sniffled, realizing there were no tears, and smiled lightly at the morning light. "I'm fine. Because I believe he wouldn't want me to die."
Lin You remained silent, trembling as she held onto me. I knew she was crying for me.
But Jun Chong, where are you in the distance? When will this longing turn into reality and appear before me again?
After wandering for a whole morning, around three in the afternoon, my classmate Wu Fei'er suddenly called me, saying she needed help and wanted us to come to school.
"Xiao You, Anxin, over here."
Wu Fei'er waved her hand as she ran towards us, panting heavily.
"Faye, did you suddenly call us for something?"
"Anxin, there's been an incident in the dormitory. Can you help us?"
"Me?"
"Yes, I heard from Li Li that you can cast spells, so I hope you can assist me."
Lin You immediately got angry and stepped in front of me. "Wu Fei'er, I didn't expect you to be in cahoots with Li Li. You need to figure this out on your own; it has nothing to do with us."
Wu Fei'er didn't seem angry; she seemed to know Lin You would scold her and waited until she finished before explaining. "I know how disgusting that woman Li Li is; of course, I wouldn't team up with her. I'm not involved in the matter between Chu Fan and Anxin either. I just heard that Anxin knows about these things, so I came to ask her. If it's just Li Li boasting, then I'll apologize. Anxin, I hope you won't be mad."
Wu Fei'er had a decent relationship with us; she had spoken up for me before, so I pulled Lin You aside and smiled apologetically at her. "Xiao You is just looking out for me; don't take it to heart."
"I know." Wu Fei'er stuck out her tongue at me. "It's not the first time I've been scolded by her; I'm used to it."
“Are you looking for trouble, Wu Fei'er?”
“Hehe, not at all.”
I smiled slightly, recalling the matter at hand, and quickly asked, “What happened in your dorm?”
At my prompting, Wu Fei'er said, “Come with me to the dorm; we can talk while we walk.”
“Sure.”
“It’s like this: our dorm mate, Liya, died three nights ago.”
“What? Liya is dead?”
Liya was also one of our classmates. Since Lin You and I hadn’t been to school these past few days, I hadn’t known. The thought of someone close to me dying made my heart ache.
Wu Fei'er nodded. “It was so sudden and inexplicable. The doctor diagnosed it as a myocardial infarction, but Liya didn’t have any heart problems. Moreover, in the bathroom where she died, she wrote a word in blood.”
“What word?”
“Ghost.” Wu Fei'er paused for a moment before continuing, “That bathroom is in our dormitory. There was a similar incident there when the dorm was newly built. I don’t know if you’ve heard that story.”
