In the night, I was in a hazy sleep, constantly sensing something approaching in the darkness. I tried to move, but found myself completely unable to do so.
A slight chill seeped into my back, quickening my heartbeat.
When a person closes their eyes, their hearing becomes incredibly sensitive. I noticed that the thing had come close to the left side of the bed, where Xiao Bai slept, rustling and breathing heavily.
With my drowsy eyes barely open, I caught a glimpse of a shadow standing at the foot of the bed, reaching out towards the sleeping Xiao Bai. The sharp tips of its fingers glinted menacingly in the moonlight.
Xiao Bai struggled violently on the bed, causing it to shake intensely. I wanted to get up or scream to alert others in the dormitory, but no matter how I tried to move, it was futile. Even Wu Fei'er on the upper bunk remained sound asleep without any sign of stirring.
I lost track of time until Xiao Bai finally stopped struggling, her legs stretched out on the bed, motionless. I saw the shadow slowly turn away, and just as I was about to see its face clearly, a sharp pain shot through my cheek, jolting me awake.
"Anxin, what's wrong? You didn't respond when I called you," Lin You said, looking pale with red-rimmed eyes. "I thought something had happened to you too."
"Something happened to me?"
I didn't understand what she meant. My gaze instinctively darted towards Xiao Bai's bed, and as I looked down, my brows furrowed.
Xiao Bai lay still on her bed, the stench of bodily waste wafting over from her direction. Her eyes were wide open, mouth agape, and her hands were tightly gripping her neck as if trying to strangle herself.
Recalling the dream from earlier that night, it all suddenly felt real.
"We woke up this morning and found Xiao Bai dead. We couldn't wake you up either; I almost thought you were in trouble too."
"What about Faye and Dream Dream?"
"I don't know. When I woke up, they were gone. They probably went to call for help."
I climbed out of bed, feeling utterly weak as if I'd run a marathon. Outside, there were many people gathered around.
"I'll help you; take it slow."
Lin You supported me as we walked outside, and the people at the entrance quickly made way for us.
"I didn't expect Gu Anxin to really cast a spell. First it was against Chu Fan, and now it's against Xiao Bai. How pitiful," someone remarked.
As if prompted by that comment, another person chimed in, "Yeah, did you see her strange behavior alone in the bathroom last night? That was definitely her casting a spell. Otherwise, how could she suddenly move into the dormitory and cause a death right away? Clearly, she's responsible."
"What are you talking about!" Lin You exclaimed angrily. "Anxin would never harm Xiao Bai!"
One person retorted, "Just check the school website for yourself!"
"Give it to me." Lin You snatched the phone from her hand and opened it. The headline on the school website read, "Gu Anxin Casts a Spell in the Bathroom at Midnight! Everyone Be Careful!"
Below that was a video capturing my encounter in the bathroom last night.
There was no sound, but my actions appeared bizarre, reminiscent of some ritualistic behavior.
It dawned on me that they had installed a pinhole camera in the corner of the bathroom.
Recalling what Liya had said to me last night about Wu Fei'er suddenly inviting me to help, I realized there were ulterior motives behind it. But it was too late to discuss that now.
It was only eight-thirty in the morning, yet there were already thousands of comments below, with negative remarks making up more than half.
With this morning's incident added in, nearly everyone believed I was the murderer of Xiao Bai.
"Damn it, it must be Wu Fei'er’s doing! Only people from this dormitory knew what happened last night!"
Lin You slammed her phone down and charged toward the stairs. Knowing her fiery temper, I feared she might do something irreversible and immediately followed her.
"Xiao You, calm down."
"Calm down? They’ve ruined your reputation like this, and you can still tolerate it?" Lin You shook off my hand and continued forward with determination, sweeping through like a conquering hero. "First it was Li Li, now it's them. If I don't get my revenge, I won't bear the surname Lin. Anxin, don’t say anything; I’ll handle this. I will definitely get justice for you!"
"Oh ho, what kind of justice are you seeking? A madwoman's good friend?" Wu Fei'er and Dream Dream approached us with mocking smiles. "Or perhaps a friend of a murderer?"
Wu Fei'er burst into laughter, but before her laughter could reach its peak, Lin You slapped her. Her expression changed dramatically as she shouted, "Lin You, what are you going crazy for?"
"Xiao You, calm down."
Seeing her take action, I quickly grabbed her arm. This was school, and fighting would get them in trouble. Looking up, I noticed a black mist hovering above Wu Fei'er’s head, similar to what Xiao Bai had before.
"Xiao Bai is dead, and instead of being sad, you dare to do something like this? Wu Fei'er, has your conscience been eaten by a dog? Apologize to Anxin immediately and delete that video, or don't blame me for being rude."
"I won't!" Wu Fei'er was also fired up. Since they were already at odds, there was no need to pretend anymore. "I just can't stand Anxin's face. Why should Professor Qi treat her so well? Lin You, I warn you, if you touch me even a little, I'll make sure you can't get by in the future!"
"You think I won't dare!"
Lin You rolled up her sleeves and was about to charge at her. I was scared and pulled her back by the arm. "Xiao You, calm down. She's clearly trying to provoke you."
I glanced at Wu Fei'er and remembered how she could be so ruthless to her roommate of four years. What wouldn't she do against Lin You?
Moreover, she must have seen how Xiao Bai died but didn't wake us up right away; instead, she chose to spread the video to slander me.
Thinking of Liya's situation made me regret not helping her; Reaper Ghost would have been the best choice for her!
"Listen, other protagonists are so reasonable; don’t act like a shrew. No wonder no one loves you. Don’t think everyone will cling to you like that idiot Ling Feng."
Lin You stiffened. I knew Wu Fei'er’s words had struck a nerve. I stepped forward to shield Lin You. "Wu Fei'er, don’t think no one knows what you're doing. Justice still exists; one day you'll face the consequences of your actions!"
Wu Fei'er turned pale. "You’re insane; I'm not talking to you anymore."
She turned to leave, but unexpectedly lost her footing and tumbled down the stairs.
It wasn’t a big deal; the dormitory stairs weren’t high, and the steps were low. Only the iron railing had broken off a piece that fell inward.
When Wu Fei'er fell, she was initially at a safe distance from the railing. However, when she stood up again, she lost her balance and fell headfirst onto the broken railing. She didn’t even have time to scream before she convulsed a few times and died.
"Ah—"
The scene unfolded before everyone's eyes, plunging them into panic.
"Someone's dead."
As I stood up after Wu Fei'er fell, I caught sight of that familiar shadow. There was no time to stop it; everything happened too quickly, and the shadow vanished in an instant.
Wu Fei'er's lifeless eyes were fixed intently on the direction where Dream Dream stood. Instinctively, I turned to look and saw Dream Dream wearing a cold smile.
It seemed she noticed me staring at her; she suddenly glanced my way, her pupils dark with a hint of crimson blood. The black mist above her head thickened, resembling that shadow perfectly.
"What are you all making such a fuss about?"
The Director of the Guidance Office, rushing over upon hearing the commotion, turned the corner and was met with the sight of Wu Fei'er's lifeless body. His legs went weak, and his voice trembled as he asked, "What... what happened here?"
"Wu Fei'er suddenly fell and died."
"Director, I think someone did this on purpose to kill Faye and Little White."
"What nonsense are you spouting!" Lin You, seeing that it was the girl who had smashed her phone speaking up, immediately got angry and was about to give her a piece of her mind when Qi Zhi walked up from the stairs.
"We will investigate this matter thoroughly. You all go back now and stay away from the scene to avoid interfering with the police investigation."
Qi Zhi's tone was displeased, his gaze intimidating, laced with barely concealed anger. The girl felt wronged, her eyes reddening as she stomped away in frustration.
"Gu Anxin, Lin You, and Dream Dream, you three are involved in this. Come with me for questioning."
Before long, the police arrived to gather evidence and take statements as per protocol. I kept my eyes on Dream Dream, noticing how quiet she had become; nothing else seemed out of place.
I couldn't tell if it was just my imagination or something more; I couldn't shake the feeling that she was Liya.
By the time the police finished their investigation, half a day had passed. Although we were present at the scene of the incident, there was no evidence linking us to any wrongdoing, so we were allowed to leave.
After all, one had died from asphyxiation and another from a fall—neither had anything to do with us.
But I knew clearly that this matter was not human-made.
“Dream Dream.”
As I was leaving, I called out to Dream Dream, and she paused, turning to me with a slight smile that sent chills down my spine.
Her gentle voice floated into my ears, “The ghost and the bell are right there.”
I followed her gaze and happened to see Qi Yi walking in through the door. I jolted in surprise, but when I turned back, Dream Dream had already vanished.
Just as I was about to chase after her, I caught a glimpse of a familiar silhouette darting past behind Qi Yi, the black fabric of their clothing billowing as Wind Sound swiftly moved by.
“Jun Chong?”
My heart raced as I pursued.
But there was nothing in the long corridors outside.
I couldn’t be sure if that silhouette was Jun Chong, nor could I confirm who Dream Dream was referring to.
At that moment, I received a call from Molin. As soon as the line connected, his anxious yet excited voice came through, “Anxin, hurry back! We’ve made a discovery!”
