Jun Chong lay on the ground, countless streams of blood flowing from his wounds. I could even see that beating Heart gradually turning a deathly gray, on the verge of stopping altogether.
The light in his dark eyes was fading, and Hollow had quietly spread.
Whether human, ghost, demon, or monster, everyone has a beating heart. Once the heart dies, life cannot continue. He lay there motionless.
"Jun Chong, don't go! Don't die!"
I crawled over and held him tightly, tears streaming down my face, blood-red and falling down my cheeks with uncontrollable wails.
"It’s my fault; it’s my mistake. Please stay with me. I truly didn’t mean it; I didn’t want to hurt you—"
My cries echoed through the air as Shizui looked at Jun Chong's figure, his gaze dimming as well.
Although the seal had been successfully broken, Jun Chong was still injured by Blood Flame, and his Heart was in grave danger at this moment.
The red nine-tailed fox glanced between him and me before finally drawing a line of injury on my arm. Shizui immediately tried to stop it but heard it say, "If we don’t stop the Blood Flame from burning the wound, he will truly be beyond saving."
"Are you saying you have a way?" Shizui narrowed his eyes and said in a low voice, "Who are you?"
"Tian Yuan."
I blankly shifted my gaze and saw Tian Yuan's claws gripping my hand, letting the blood from my wound drip onto Jun Chong's exposed Heart. The color that had originally faded suddenly brightened; that heart began to beat lightly again. Though weak, I truly saw it pulsing.
"He's moving, he's moving!" I cried out in joy, holding Jun Chong tightly. "Jun Chong, wake up, open your eyes and look at me, Jun Chong!"
But Jun Chong lay there with his eyes open, still unresponsive, the emptiness in his pupils showing no sign of relief.
"Why is he still not awake? Is it—"
"He is a soul, living only because of his innate powerful Ghost Power. However, the Blood Flame Sword's power was too great; it injured his soul twice. Just now, he expended so much Ghost Power to break the seal that he is on the brink of exhaustion. It's only a matter of time before he succumbs."
Tears that I had finally managed to hold back fell once more. I clung to Jun Chong, biting my lip until it bled as I reached out to close his open eyes, resting my cheek against his forehead.
"Jun Chong, if you die, I will accompany you. We promised to never part in this life; I will follow you through life and death. If your soul disperses, I will not survive in this world; even if my spirit fades, I will scatter with you across the heavens and earth. You said you didn't want me to die; if you don't wake up, then I will have no choice but to find you. So for my sake, please open your eyes quickly."
"Anxin, don't say that." Shizui's voice was choked with emotion as he placed a hand on my shoulder and patted it gently. "We need to go back."
"No, I'm not going anywhere. I just want to hold him like this until death comes; I don't want to be apart from him." I smiled faintly at Shizui. "Because I killed him; I'm the sinner."
"Mommy, did… did the baby do all this?" The baby's terrified voice came from beside me, filled with uncontrollable panic. "What did the baby do? Why is Daddy like this? Did the baby kill Daddy?"
I looked at Jun Chong in confusion and shook my head slightly. "It was me, not you."
"Ultimately, it's that person's fault. He manipulated the Demon Fetus's mind for his own gain, which led to this situation. I suspect his main goal wasn't the Demon Fetus but rather Anxin's uncontrollable power." Tian Yuan scratched his fox-like head and said, "I thought I arrived in time but was still a step too late; I'm sorry."
Hearing this, the baby's voice trembled. "Mommy, I'm sorry; it was my fault for trusting him."
“Tian Yuan, how did you know there was danger here? You clearly have a seal on you; how could it disappear?”
“My name is Raccoon Fox, and I am a red nine-tailed fox. The seal was placed on me by my master to prevent others from noticing me. My master anticipated this calamity involving Anxin and the Lord of the Abyss, so I was sent to assist.”
“Who is your master?”
Tian Yuan shook his head. “I cannot say. But my master must have a way to deal with the Lord. I will return to consult with my master.”
Shizui nodded. “I will take him back and use Eerie Aura to heal him. You hurry back.”
Tian Yuan nodded, then glanced at me. Extending a paw, he blinked and drew a few symbols in the air before my belly. Suddenly, I felt a cool sensation wash over my abdomen, soothing and refreshing.
“This is a talisman given to me by my master. It can temporarily put him to sleep until you find what you need. However, the Demon Fetus will definitely be born, so you must make your choice quickly. Also, Anxin, your blood is a good remedy for him. If possible, please use your blood to nourish him. I must go now.”
With that, Tian Yuan’s small figure flickered and vanished from sight.
I only caught the last half of his words; my earlier wounds had already healed, so I could only bite my skin again to draw blood. Shizui quickly stopped me. “What are you doing?”
“I’m going to give him blood, as much as possible,” I struggled, my gaze fixed on the increasingly cold Jun Chong.
“Anxin!” Shizui shouted, gripping my arm tightly. “I know the pain in your heart. When Rou Er left me, I felt that same kind of pain all too well. But you must understand, he is not dead yet. If he knew you were hurting yourself like this, how would he feel? He has always hoped for your safety; your well-being is his greatest motivation to keep living.”
I stood there in a daze, my vision blurring once more as I allowed Shizui to hold me close. “Anxin, come back with me. I will not let him leave just like that.”
I grabbed his collar, crying uncontrollably, my voice choked with emotion. "Shizui, you must, you must save him. I'm not a strong person; I can't bear to live alone. If he dies, then I will die too, absolutely!"
Shizui suddenly froze, his expression inscrutable, before finally pulling me tightly into his embrace. The whirlwind beneath our feet stirred slightly, and in the blink of an eye, we vanished from the ground.
Just as we left, a slender figure appeared at the door, gazing longingly at the hazy sky. After a long time, they spoke softly, "Rong Zhi, is that you?"
Shizui brought me and Jun Chong to his shop and placed him inside a massive column of the spiral staircase. He then said to me, "Though this is the entrance to the underworld, I've set up a barrier that can provide him with a temporary sanctuary for healing. The Eerie Aura here is dense and abundant; it will be very beneficial for him. You must offer him a bowl of blood every midnight. I will look for other ways to save him and hope for good news from Tian Yuan. Anxin, remember, never enter inside by yourself. You are human; going in would not only harm you but also be detrimental to Jun Chong. Keep that in mind!"
I nodded. "As long as he is safe and sound, I am willing to do anything."
"It's getting late; you should rest for a while. I will keep watch over him."
"No." I shook my head firmly. "I want to stay by his side. Even if it's just one more glance, it eases my guilt."
Stubbornly, I sat on the sofa, peering through the dark column to see Jun Chong lying quietly inside. Ghosts flitted around us, continuously replenishing his strength.
Shizui sighed and stopped paying attention to me. After fussing around in the back for a while, he brought out some food. "You should eat something!"
"I'm not hungry."
"If you collapse, who will watch over him?"
Only then did I lift my head to look at Shizui before glancing down at the bowl of noodles. My nose tinged with sadness. "I'll eat; I promise I'll take care of myself so that he can get better."
As a result, I ate that bowl of noodles while crying. In truth, I wasn't really hungry; by the end, I had thrown it all up, my stomach churning with acid. Yet, I kept forcing myself to eat. Shizui couldn't bear to watch and snatched the bowl away from me. "Don't push yourself."
"I'm not! The noodles taste great."
"Anxin!"
Shizui held me tightly in his arms, his body trembling slightly. "I see your strength, and I know how tough you are. But your strength makes me ache for you. I understand how much pain you're in. Painful strength can't last long. I want you to truly be strong, not to torture yourself like this."
"But this is the only way I can numb the pain in my heart. Shizui, do you know? It hurts so much that I want to dig it out and see how it can be so cruel, even willing to harm its own beloved."
"It's not your fault."
"It is my fault! Everything is my fault!" I clutched Shizui's shirt tightly, shouting.
"If I hadn't insisted on keeping this child, he wouldn't have spent a thousand years sealing himself away. Faced with attacks, he might have had the strength to resist. The root of all this is my existence; I've brought him danger time and again, and now he has to pay with his life. Shizui, do you know how much I hated myself when I saw him fall? I hated myself for being so powerless, for not learning my lesson after all this time. I hated that I could only say I'd help him but instead brought him endless danger. If I died, if I didn't exist, he might live better and recover faster to become his Lord of the Abyss. My existence is a stumbling block for him, so I—I want—"
"Don't say that word so easily again. Your life was exchanged for his safety; it means everything to him—more important than his own survival. So take back that word from your heart and live well for me. Live to see him come out safe from within, holding you tightly like this."
Shizui's voice was muffled behind my cries, sounding somewhat heavy, filled with a dense aura of danger that carried an absolute firmness, warning me that I must live well.
I cried for a long time while Shizui held me just as long. It wasn't until dawn's light illuminated the earth that I slowly fell asleep, feeling a cool breath softly fall on my face, reminiscent of Jun Chong's return—a most comforting sensation.
