As Mocus tried to calm the unease within him, the tent flap was suddenly pushed open, and Jonas strode in. His arrival instantly thickened the atmosphere inside the tent with tension.
"Alison, Mocus," Jonas's voice was low and steady, his gaze sweeping back and forth between the two. "The tribe requires all of us to go for an examination by the Old Witch; they don't want anyone to be missed."
However, upon hearing Jonas's voice, Mocus's body began to tremble uncontrollably. A wave of inexplicable fear surged through him, not stemming from rational judgment but from a deeper, instinctual response. Every hair on his body stood on end, as if some hidden danger within Jonas had awakened his defense mechanisms.
The reaction was so intense that Mocus's heart raced, cold sweat quickly soaking his forehead and back. The voice in his mind echoed again, this time with an urgent warning: "Run away from him... stay away!"
Mocus couldn't comprehend the source of this fear, but he felt every muscle in his body screaming at him to distance himself from Jonas, as if the other man were an extreme threat. His breathing became rapid, and his gaze instinctively darted around the tent, searching for a way to escape.
Jonas keenly noticed Mocus's abnormal behavior; his expression grew serious, brows furrowing. He looked at Mocus's terrified face and felt a mix of confusion and concern. "Mocus, are you okay? You seem off."
Mocus struggled to regain control, yet his body involuntarily shrank back as if trying to maintain distance from Jonas. He felt an indescribable pressure closing in from all sides, and the voice in his head grew more insistent: "You must run away!"
Jonas's gaze sharpened further; his instincts told him that Mocus's reaction was not merely due to overwhelming mental stress. Tentatively, he took a few steps closer to see more clearly, but this movement sent Mocus's fear into overdrive.
Mocus's body jolted as if pricked by a needle, instinctively retreating until his back hit the wall of the tent, appearing cornered by some invisible force. A flicker of terror and despair crossed his eyes, as if Jonas's presence had become an unbearable threat.
Alison quickly noticed Mocus's abnormal state; her eyes filled with confusion and deep concern. Seeing Mocus tense and anxious like a cornered animal made her realize that the situation was more serious than she had imagined.
Without hesitation, she stepped forward, positioning herself between Jonas and Mocus to block their line of sight. Alison reached out a hand and gently pressed it against Jonas's chest, signaling him not to come any closer. "Jonas, stop. Mocus is experiencing too much mental strain; he might be... a bit unstable right now."
Her voice was low and soothing as she tried to calm both Jonas and herself amidst the rising tension. She understood that Mocus’s current state was exceptionally fragile; any further provocation could lead him to completely break down. Alison didn't want things to worsen.
Jonas furrowed his brow and took a step back, still looking at Mocus in confusion. He had never seen Mocus so out of control, which made him feel unusually uneasy. His intuition told him that this was not merely due to mental stress; there might be deeper reasons behind it.
Alison, noticing Jonas's lingering skepticism, pointed to Samuel, who lay on the bed, dazedly playing with his tablet. She softly said, "Just like him, Samuel has also been greatly frightened. He is now completely trapped in his own world, unable to escape."
Samuel seemed entirely cut off from the outside world, staring blankly at the tablet, his fingers moving mechanically across the screen as if that was the only thing that could provide him comfort. His face bore no expression, only a sense of numbness and emptiness, as if everything happening around him was irrelevant.
"They all need time to recover," Alison continued to explain, her tone filled with helplessness and urgency. "This mission has impacted everyone significantly, especially Mocus. His current state is very unstable; he may have already been affected by some kind of mental influence we cannot comprehend."
Her eyes were filled with concern. Although she tried to remain calm, she knew that Mocus's situation had surpassed her control. She worried that if not addressed promptly, Mocus might fall into a deeper crisis.
Jonas remained silent for a moment, his gaze shifting between Alison and Mocus. He no longer attempted to approach Mocus but began to ponder Alison's words. He understood that this mission was extraordinary and that what they faced might not only be external threats but also an invisible, intangible force gradually eroding their minds.
"Alright," Jonas finally stepped back, his tone softening. "We can't let him be further stimulated. Alison, please take good care of him."
Alison nodded and watched Jonas leave the tent, her heart still heavy with worry. She knew that this crisis had only just begun and that Mocus's condition might be just the tip of the iceberg.
Alison turned her attention back to Mocus and noticed a look of relief washing over his face as if he had just escaped an unseen danger. Gratitude flickered in his eyes as his tense nerves relaxed slightly at that moment. Mocus lowered his head and spoke softly but sincerely to Alison, "Thank you, Alison. I really didn’t know why I was so scared just now..."
Alison gently nodded, a comforting smile appearing on her face. Then she lightly patted Mocus on the shoulder and spoke in a tender yet firm tone, "It's alright, Mocus; you are safe now. Sit down and rest for a while. I will prepare some calming medication to help ease your mind."
She helped Mocus sit at the edge of the bed and then softly said, "Don’t think too much right now; it’s best to calm yourself down a bit. You've endured too much pressure lately; letting your mind relax is very important for you."
Mocus followed her advice and sat down, feeling his body finally begin to loosen up. He took a deep breath, trying to suppress the fear within him. He knew Alison was right; what he needed now was calmness rather than dwelling on the troubling issues that plagued him.
Allison carefully observed Mocus's condition, ensuring that he showed no further abnormal reactions before turning to fetch the medicine. Her movements were gentle and professional, each step infused with a calming power. She understood that Mocus needed more than just the aid of medication; he required psychological support and understanding.
"This potion won't make you drowsy; it will simply help you relax," Allison said softly as she prepared the mixture. "We all need to stay calm, especially in situations like this. Your condition is only temporary, and I believe you'll recover soon."
Mocus nodded, feeling Allison's words wash over him like a warm current, gradually bringing him peace. Although he still felt some unease, he could at least manage his fear now, no longer feeling so helpless. Allison's presence and her comforting words were like a lifeline, pulling him up from the depths of darkness.
