Sitting quietly in the interrogation room of the police station, the officer across from her had a piercing gaze, as if he could see through her soul.
“Tan Jing, what is your relationship with Li Feng and Su Wan'er?” The officer's voice echoed in the small room.
“I am just Li Feng's wife and Su Wan'er's friend,” Tan Jing replied calmly, her eyes firmly meeting the officer's.
“Did you know they would have an accident on the highway?” The officer's tone was aggressive.
Tan Jing took a deep breath; her fingers trembled lightly, but her voice remained steady. “I didn't know. Their affairs have nothing to do with me.”
The officer's gaze sharpened. “Then why did you call them while they were driving?”
Tan Jing lowered her head, her voice quivering slightly. “I just wanted to tell Li Feng that I wanted a divorce.”
The officer scrutinized her, seemingly searching for signs of deceit. But Tan Jing's plan had been executed perfectly; she left no evidence behind. In the end, she was released.
As Tan Jing stepped out of the police station, sunlight fell on her face, yet she felt a deep chill within. She looked up at the sky; although the sun shone brightly, her heart felt as if it were covered in ice and snow.
A few days later, Tan Jing stood in front of the house where she had once lived with Li Feng, now owned by someone else. She had sold the house because she could not bear to be surrounded by Li Feng's shadows.
“This is your money.” Tan Jing handed a bank card to Pang Fei, Su Wan'er's ex-boyfriend.
Pang Fei took the card, a glint of greed flashing in his eyes. “Thank you, Tan Jing. I will do as you said.”
“Don't forget our agreement.” Tan Jing's voice was cold.
“Rest assured, I will leave this country and never come back,” Pang Fei said with a smile as he turned to leave.
Tan Jing watched his figure disappear around the corner, feeling a mix of emotions within her. She knew she had lost the courage to love again.
Months later, Tan Jing lay on the bed in her new home beside a young and handsome man whose gaze was gentle and affectionate.
“When can we truly be together?” The man's voice was filled with anticipation.
Tan Jing lowered her eyes, avoiding his gaze. “I don't know; maybe never.”
The man sighed softly; he understood that there was an unhealable wound in Tan Jing's heart. He said nothing more but held her hand tightly.
Tan Jing closed her eyes, knowing deep down that she had lost the courage to love again.
But under the arrangement of fate, she met this young man, whose presence was like a ray of light, trying to dispel the gloom in her heart. They decided to travel to Europe together, hoping to find a new beginning in a foreign land.
On the cruise ship heading to Europe, the sea breeze gently caressed them, and the sunlight danced on the shimmering surface of the ocean. Tan Jing leaned against the railing, gazing into the distance, while the young man stood beside her, his eyes filled with affection.
"You look a bit melancholic. Are you thinking about something?" he asked softly.
Tan Jing smiled lightly without answering, turning her head to look at him. "Don't you think the sea breeze is quite pleasant?"
"It is indeed pleasant, but I find it even more comfortable with you by my side," he replied playfully, trying to break her reverie.
Tan Jing laughed at his words. "Is your mouth smeared with honey?"
"Only in front of you do I speak like this," he said earnestly, a hint of sincerity shining in his eyes.
Her heart stirred slightly, but she quickly regained her composure. "You’re making me feel flustered."
"Then don’t think too much; just enjoy the moment," he said gently as he took her hand, and together they watched seagulls soaring in the sky.
During dinner, the restaurant on the cruise ship was softly lit, and music filled the air. They sat across from each other, savoring delicious food and enjoying this rare tranquility.
"You have a beautiful smile; you should smile more often," he suddenly said.
A blush crept onto Tan Jing's face. "What’s gotten into you today? You keep saying these shy-inducing things."
"I'm just speaking from my heart," his gaze was firm, making it impossible for Tan Jing to look away.
She lowered her head and softly said, "Thank you, but I don’t know if I can love like I used to."
"That's okay; I can wait," his voice was gentle yet resolute, stirring warmth within Tan Jing's heart.
As night fell, the party on the cruise ship began, with music and laughter filling the air. Tan Jing and he twirled on the dance floor, feeling her mood lighten with the rhythm of the music.
"You know? I never imagined I would meet you in such a situation," she whispered in his ear.
"Fate always loves to play tricks, but I believe every encounter has its meaning," he replied, his eyes sparkling with anticipation for the future.
Tan Jing said nothing more; she simply held him tightly as if in that moment she had found a long-lost warmth and hope.
