Facing Agamemnon's question, Der Yi and De Xin exchanged a glance, seemingly reaching some kind of understanding in silence. Suddenly, their bodies began to deform, as if melting into puddles of soft mud. These puddles slowly merged, eventually forming a larger pile of soft mud.
Agamemnon saw the situation and knew that the creatures in front of him were no ordinary humans. He calmly put down his handgun. The pile of soft mud emitted Der Yi's voice, with surprise and curiosity, asking, "How did you find me, Half Blood?"
Agamemnon calmly replied, "You have been staying indoors all this time, living in the dark corners, and your attitude towards me is clearly more tense than angry. Moreover, the faint trace of a monster's aura when Der Yi's pants were torn confirmed my suspicion. You are a shapeshifter, a creature capable of transforming into a human or other beings."
A soft laughter emanated from the ground, carrying a hint of admiration and resignation, "You are truly remarkable. Just a small flaw and you've already discovered it."
Agamemnon then asked, "How did you come here? Has no one noticed for so long?" The shapeshifter slithered and crawled onto the beer robot's head and said, "I was originally just a regular monster in the Shadowy Forest, isolated from the human world. Der Yi and his wife, they are botanists from the capital, came here for a plant investigation. Unfortunately, they accidentally ate poisonous mushrooms in the forest and were on the brink of death. I instinctively wanted to devour them, but seeing them holding hands, I suddenly felt a strong curiosity and longing for human life."
The shapeshifter spoke with a hint of sadness, "So I decided not to eat them, but instead stole their memories, took on their appearance, and continued their lives. I imitated everything about them, learned human behavior, language, and even their emotions. Over the years, I have been afraid of my true identity being discovered, so I have been hiding in this town, becoming Der Yi and his wife, Der Xin."
Agamemnon fell silent for a moment, then asked, "Has your life just remained peaceful like this? Have the people in town never suspected your true identity?" His voice was filled with curiosity.
shapeshifter continued, "Yes, our life is very peaceful. I try my best not to show any abnormalities, living like an ordinary human couple. But I always know that it's all a lie, a fantasy I've woven for myself. I'm always on guard, afraid that one day someone like you will discover my true identity." shapeshifter spoke with a hint of helplessness and sadness in their voice.
Agamemnon nodded and then asked, "What does it feel like to be human? And what does it feel like to become a husband and wife?"
Agamemnon's question made shapeshifter silent for a while. Its slimy body slowly wriggled on top of the beer robot's head, as if reflecting on something. After a while, its voice emerged from the slime, tinged with a hint of contemplation and reminiscence.
"Becoming human, for me, is a completely new experience. The human world is full of emotions, rules, and constraints, which is unprecedented for me. I have learned about caring, sadness, joy, and anger, emotions that did not exist in my original life. I have discovered that human emotions are so rich, and every day feels like a new adventure."
It continues, "And becoming a spouse, that is the most wonderful thing I have experienced. From their memories, I have learned how to love someone, how to spend time with a partner. Although all of this is built on a stolen identity, I find that I really like this kind of life. Waking up together every morning, running the tavern together, facing the ups and downs of life together. This feeling is something I have never experienced in my life in the forest."
"Becoming human, I experienced a sense of 'belonging' for the first time. In the forest, I was just a solitary predator, with no family, no friends, only endless loneliness. But as a human couple, I felt the sense of being accepted and loved. Although all of this was built on a lie, the feeling of being needed and trusted by people is new and precious to me."
Its voice was full of struggle: "I often ask myself, who am I? Do I really belong in this human world? Should I be a ruthless monster, or can I be a being with human emotions? Whenever I see Der Yi and De Xin's friends visiting, and see their sincere smiles and conversations, my heart is filled with conflict. I long to be a part of them, but at the same time, I am afraid they will discover the truth."
shapeshifter continued thoughtfully, "The human world is filled with complex emotions and moral standards, which are so unfamiliar to me. I often ponder, what is justice, what is evil? In my world, there is only survival and hunting. But in the human world, nothing is so simple. Love, hate, happiness, sadness... these emotions confuse me, yet deeply attract me."
Its voice carried an indescribable emotion, "During this time of imitating humans, I have learned many things, but at the same time, I have lost my original self. Now, I am neither a pure monster nor a true human. I am just an existence caught between two worlds, forever unable to find answers."
"Is that how you feel too?," shapeshifter suddenly asked.
Agamemnon stood there quietly, his eyes revealing deep contemplation. When shapeshifter asked this question, he felt a hint of resonance. He remained silent for a while, then slowly began to speak.
"Yes, I sometimes feel that way too. As a Half Blood, I have been endowed with extraordinary power and ability, but at the same time, I have been deprived of the ordinary life of a regular person. I am always hovering on the edge, unable to fully integrate into any world. I understand your feelings; we are both forced to stand in the shadow of this world, neither belonging to the light nor able to fully merge into the darkness."
Agamemnon's voice carried a hint of sadness: "I have always been searching for my place, hoping to find somewhere that belongs to me. But every time I get close to this goal, I am dragged back by reality. Beings like us are always searching for a dream that can never be reached."
He turned to the shapeshifter: "You imitate humans, run a tavern, and live an ordinary life. Perhaps you are closer to the life of ordinary people than I am. But no matter what, we are both abandoned by fate, always searching for our own belonging."
The slime monster fell silent. Its body trembled slightly, as if reflecting on Agamemnon's words. Two life forms, one a Half Blood, the other a shapeshifter, though from different worlds, shared similar destinies and struggles. In this late-night tavern, they shared their stories and pains with each other, as if finding a hint of understanding and comfort.
