"I feel strange."
"What?"
"Why would he directly assume that I am a traitor to my clan?"
Wen Yue City sat at the edge of the bed, his expression filled with doubt. In fact, he shared similar concerns with Tansen Ocpie: if he claimed he had not betrayed the internal Clan, then Wen Yue City could directly report to Judgment Day about Ocpie's communication with him. Yet, he chose to abandon that option and followed his heart instead. This meant that Ocpie held leverage over him and could use it to blackmail him at any time.
"I can see that you admire him."
On the other side of the bedroom, bathed in moonlight, Liang Muqi could only rely on the dim light from an old desk lamp to write. In this faint glow, the ink from his pen seemed ethereal, as if blue water ripples danced with the swift movement of the pen tip, only to freeze in place the next moment. "But since you’ve already said he is a leader from his own planet, I don’t think it’s surprising for you to be so amazed for this long."
Liang Muqi's handwriting was neat, which impressed Wen Yue City. He complimented him daily, much like his current admiration for Tansen Ocpie's ability to discern character. A sudden cramp shot through Liang Muqi's thumb and index finger, causing him to gasp and reluctantly put down his pen. He leaned back against the chair and together with Wen Yue City, who had just walked in, they admired the pile of notes scattered across the table. Due to a lack of adequate experimental equipment, he could only conduct theoretical analyses in this rented apartment. At that moment, the computer on the table went black, and Wen Yue City caught a glimpse of a differential equation on the screen just before it shut down.
"Why did you copy this equation verbatim?" Wen Yue City asked as he looked at the latest page marked by Liang Muqi with Quark Potential. "Are you completely at a loss?"
Wen Yue City had already introduced the concept of String Energy along with its basic formulas and theorems to Liang Muqi. As a scientist, Liang Muqi's task was to connect these concepts with all existing human physical knowledge as quickly as possible. His greatest wish now was for String Energy to integrate seamlessly into the scientific framework without contradicting what humanity had built; this would not only prove that human science was not wrong but also that it was not lagging behind since string theory had already been proposed but remained at a preliminary theoretical research stage. Working backwards from applied fields to theoretical research was akin to a student looking at answers before attempting problems—while it couldn't guarantee complete correctness, it at least provided a clear direction.
"Not entirely at a loss," Liang Muqi replied, pointing at Takahashi Potential on the table. "The relationship between Quark Potential and Molecular Potential, as well as their effective conditions, all revolve around the resonance of strings; the threshold of resonance frequency will determine the magnitude of force..."
"This is basic knowledge; I believe I've introduced it to you before."
"Yes, but that's precisely where the problem lies," Liang Muqi said. "The formulas you provided are based on your Lunar Civilization's logic; how I can relate them to our current understanding and apply them practically is still something I'm trying to figure out."
"Let me add something," Wen Yue City said while gazing out at the crescent moon as if reminiscing. "My expertise is in ship repair, which means everything I tell you is only applicable in terms of space navigation. I'm not familiar with other fields, but I believe in you."
"Believing in me doesn't help..." Liang Muqi sighed. "We're lacking too much."
Wen Yue City understood what Liang Muqi was lamenting. As one of Earth's top scientists in this era, how could he not recognize the importance of experiments? Without equipment and sufficient funding, even abundant theoretical conclusions would be futile. Given the current situation, Liang Muqi had only one possible direction in mind, yet even he saw its chances of success as slim. He reawakened his computer and leaned against one side of his face; his mouse hovered over Quantum Encryption Communication's entry but refused to click.
Wen Yue City leaned closer: "I'll contact them."
"You shouldn't," Liang Muqi rejected firmly.
Both fell into silence. They could easily choose to ignore this murky situation and not get involved; however, at this moment, the choice of direction and outcome lay in their hands. Liang Muqi even considered that there might be only one possible ending: that his efforts would be meaningless and unable to change a trampled fate.
One was an Earthling condemned by his compatriots and destined for infamy; the other was a Moon Person who chose betrayal against civilization's will. Just like Gavrilo Princip who volunteered in Serbia years ago—whether to fire or merely watch—each choice shaped an entire history. No one ever asked him how he thought at that moment; perhaps for him pulling the trigger was merely about personal beliefs—how could one truly see into the future while being part of history?
"Continue."
"Continue what?"
"Keep writing."
Wen Yue City snatched Liang Muqi's pen away and tossed it back onto the computer: "When I told you about String Energy, it wasn't so you could find excuses to avoid it. Those who share common goals will surely set aside past grievances; please trust me."
"The thoughts of Earthlings are more complex than you can imagine, Moon City." Liang Muqi calmly gathered his scattered drafts, attempting to stack them neatly. "Moreover, I see no hope."
"It is precisely because we see no hope that we must hold hope in our hearts." Wen Yue City had already picked up the mouse. "Tell me your quantum tunnel characteristics."
Liang Muqi stared at his jaw, hesitating to speak. The streaks of black and white in his hair revealed his uncertainty to Wen Yue City.
"Don't you want a chance for redemption?" Wen Yue City met his gaze. "This is not just your opportunity; it is ours as well—those of us who yearn for light and freedom. What exactly are you hesitating about? Do you also want to be one of those Earthlings who distort history for personal feelings? Liang, to be honest, I respect you, but only for your talent. This isn't the first time I've tried to persuade you; it seems you still have a long way to go in analyzing national sentiment and the stakes involved."
"You're the one bringing up national sentiment?" Liang Muqi forced a smile as he pulled out the keyboard and began entering the characteristic values. "But you're right; after all, this is how I've brought ruin upon myself."
The next day
The days of resting at home were over. Jiao An and Qin Weishan had already made contact and were set to depart for City M together today. However, unexpectedly, both received phone calls from Dr. Xu Yicheng, requesting that upon their arrival in City M, they meet Ming Juan at the Song Family Group headquarters to welcome someone. As for who it was, Xu Yicheng did not disclose. What puzzled them further was that after their phone calls, they discovered that Dr. Xu Yicheng had contacted them almost simultaneously, indicating that the identity of this guest was likely quite significant.
Even stranger was what happened next; within an hour, Jiao An and Qin Weishan received direct orders from General Jiang, requests from Liu Xuan, and location information from Ming Juan.
"Do we only need to go with Miss Ming?" Jiao An asked during his call with Liu Xuan.
"We will all come," Liu Xuan confirmed but then changed his tone. "However, we will not appear."
"Mysterious as ever—what's going on now?" Qin Weishan murmured as he leaned against the wall of the ascending elevator, glancing at Jiao An and the poised yet graceful Ming Juan. "Hey, they're sending us to pick someone up; can't they reveal anything? It's all so strange since we're going to meet anyway."
"There are reasons behind it; no need to overthink," Jiao An replied as he exited the elevator. The directional sign indicated the way to the meeting hall. After a few steps, he provided his answer. "They specifically requested Miss Ming to accompany us; don't you find that familiar? Just like during the Zombie War?"
As Jiao An had anticipated, the person they were meeting was none other than Liang Muqi sitting across from them, and beside him sat a stranger whose expression seemed even more anxious than Liang Muqi's own. Upon seeing them, Liang Muqi immediately stood up to shake hands.
"Uncle Liang! So it's you; no wonder they needed me," Ming Juan responded warmly as expected. She politely extended her fair hand and bowed slightly at Liang Muqi's chest level as a sign of respect for her savior.
"No need to be so polite with a traitor, young lady," Qin Weishan said as he casually sat down with his legs crossed. "Etiquette depends on the person."
Seeing Jiao An and Qin Weishan's coldness and even disdain, Wen Yue City wanted to sit up and admonish them but was restrained by Liang Muqi's hand, signaling him not to forget his own identity.
"What do you want?" Jiao An stared intently at Liang Muqi. "If there's nothing else, I'll contact the police; we've saved you once and owe you nothing."
"If that's how you put it, without me, that Hydrogen Bomb would have exploded in your faces—Xu Yicheng can vouch for me," Liang Muqi said with his hands crossed on the table. "Do I have a say now?"
Jiao An and Qin Weishan exchanged glances. "What do you want to say?" Qin Weishan asked.
"My assistant and I have made new discoveries that may be useful to you. First, this is the projected course for Judgment Day; we have yesterday's coordinates and all energy reserve information at our disposal."
"How did you..."
"Let Uncle Liang finish first," Ming Juan interjected unexpectedly.
"Secondly, we have found new energy sources that can constrain any known particle movement—including but not limited to nuclear fusion and positive antimatter reactions based on my calculations. I hope to provide a large experimental facility that supports research environments; at least Xu Yicheng's Antimatter Armor should hold promise."
"Give it to you?" Qin Weishan sat up straight.
"It is no longer the time to be entangled in right or wrong," Wen Yue City said. "I hope everyone can remain calm, make objective judgments, and make concessions for the greater good."
"Who are you?" Qin Weishan turned to Wen Yue City again.
Wen Yue City was momentarily at a loss for words. As he nervously shifted his gaze toward the window, he caught sight of another pair of eyes—one of which shone with a moonlight hue. He knew that even if Nars had not definitively determined his origins, he had likely guessed enough; at that moment, the prince of the Inner Beings was observing his every move.
"It doesn't matter who I am," Wen Yue City diverted the topic. "Liang and I risked our lives to bring you this crucial information. We could have chosen to walk away from all this turmoil and live our own lives. So I hope you can set aside your prejudices against Liang; we genuinely want to help you."
"I feel like Uncle Liang hasn't finished speaking," Ming Juan whispered to Jiao An.
"Is there anything else to say? Please say it all at once; we will consider reasonable requests," Jiao An's calm and composed demeanor became increasingly important at that moment.
"Yes, one last thing," Liang Muqi said. "There is a captured couple on their battleship who seem to possess something that could end the war."
In the book bar outside the meeting hall, An Xiaotian and others instinctively raised their heads upon hearing this, looking at Liu Xuan and Nars with questioning eyes.
"There are rumors that there is a Relic in the Andromeda Galaxy," Nars explained. "If I remember correctly, it's called the Termination Valve, but it shouldn't be used on Earth."
