On the way back, there was little to talk about. Jiang He and Song Yao had been on the run all night, narrowly escaping death twice, and were now utterly exhausted. Jinhua took the wheel, eager to drive, while the two of them curled up in their seats to catch a bit of rest and regain their strength. Driving without a license excited Jinhua; the little Pickup was thrilling and reckless, and since there were hardly any people on the road, she let her youthful spirit run wild. The two sleeping passengers had no idea that the quiet girl behind the wheel was living up to her reputation as a road killer.
As the sun fully rose, the little Pickup finally reached its destination. A sudden hard brake jolted the two from their dreams.
“Wake up!” Jinhua exclaimed, her spirits high as she reveled in the joy of finding the right place on her first outing.
Jiang He and Song Yao rubbed their sleepy eyes simultaneously and sat up.
The Pickup stopped on the west side of the roundabout, with the Second Floor Bar that Jiang He mentioned just across from them. The reason Jinhua didn’t drive right up to the entrance was because… it was blocked by Zombies.
Jiang He snapped awake immediately; within less than 24 hours, he had seen five or six Zombies already. Visually fatigued, he still didn’t dare let his guard down.
“Didn’t you say it was pretty safe?” Song Yao asked, turning around.
“Yeah, look at them; they can only wander around and can’t come up here,” Jiang He replied confidently about their stronghold.
“So what do we do now? Should we wait for them to move along before going in?” Song Yao said with some frustration. She desperately wanted to take a nap, but clearly, this situation wouldn’t allow it.
“Or we could clear them all out?” Jiang He scratched his head and estimated from a distance that there were about twenty or thirty Zombies. With just a kitchen knife, he felt a bit uncertain.
Song Yao wore a similarly helpless expression as she glanced at the boning knife in her hand and sighed.
Jinhua, however, seemed unhurried and almost wished to drive around a bit more.
Just as the three were preparing to stay put, a figure appeared on the second floor of the bar.
Song Yao’s sharp eyes quickly spotted it. She hurriedly nudged Jiang He awake, who had been planning to doze off again, and pointed at the rooftop. “Is that your friend?”
Jiang He moved to the front row, squinting his eyes to take a look, then widened them in surprise. "Yeah... what is that kid up to..."
The three of them squinted at the figure on the rooftop. They saw the tall, thin boy standing at the edge of the second floor, leaning out and occasionally tossing down empty bottles.
Twenty or thirty Zombies were drawn to the commotion above, gathering around the Small Building and howling at the sky.
Seeing that the Zombies were distracted, Jiang He instructed Jinhua to drive a bit closer. Jinhua cautiously maneuvered the car onto the street across from the bar, close enough for them to clearly hear the shouts from above. Indeed, the person upstairs was shouting obscenities.
"... damn it... come over here... if you want to eat me... come on... screw you..."
"... I'm all alone here... I'll fight you all... Jiang He, you're going to die so badly..."
"... I'll avenge you, buddy... you bastard..."
Upon hearing this, Song Yao and Jinhua burst into laughter. Song Yao blinked and said, "Looks like your friend thinks you're dead."
"This idiot, didn't he see our car coming?" Jiang He felt touched but mostly speechless. He hadn't been gone long, and already they had declared him dead...
"Do you want to say hello to him?" Jinhua asked with a grin.
"No way. If we make a sound now, it'll just attract more Zombies over here, and I don't even have the strength to hold a knife right now." Jiang He shook his head firmly, worried about what irrational actions the person upstairs might take.
Before Jiang He could come up with a plan, the person on the rooftop started shouting again.
"Disgusting things... come on... all of you come here and taste my Molotov Cocktail..."
"What is that?" The last part was too long; Jiang He didn't quite catch it.
"What kind of cocktail is that?" Jinhua explained.
"Look..." Song Yao managed to say just one word.
A person on the second floor threw down a bottle, which shattered upon hitting the ground, and then with a loud bang, a shower of flames erupted! Several Zombies surrounding the area were immediately ignited! However, the zombies seemed unbothered by the flames; even as they turned into human-shaped candles, they continued to gaze up at the food on the rooftop, screaming incessantly.
The three of them watched in shock as the person on the second floor threw down another bottle, then another, and yet another...
In just three minutes, over a dozen bottles had been hurled down from the second floor. With continuous explosions, the area below quickly transformed into a Firestorm! The Zombies gathered below were consumed by the flames, their skin and flesh charring and crackling. Jiang He and his companions could even smell a hint of barbecued meat... surprisingly appetizing.
While burning the Horde of Zombies was thrilling, Jiang He quickly recognized the problem. If these Zombies continued to act as human oil candles down there, it wouldn't be long before the bar caught fire too! In that case, their stronghold would be ruined!
"Damn it, we can't let him go on like this; the bar will be burned down!" Jiang He shouted as he jumped out of the car, cupping his hands to form a megaphone. "Chao Yifan!!! Stop burning it down!!!!"
Jiang He's shout pierced through the Firestorm and reached the second floor. The arsonist paused for a moment before exuberantly waving his arms and shouting back, "Dahai!! You're not dead!!!"
Dahai was Chao Yifan's nickname for Jiang He. They had been roommates in college and graduated in the same city; their bond was strong enough for such playful banter.
"Stop burning it! Leave some alcohol!!" Jiang He felt a pang of heartache! Although Chao Yifan's Molotov Cocktails were quite effective, wasting them like this was truly a crime against nature!
Song Yao and Jinhua sat in the car, watching the two shout at each other from afar, completely stunned. The burning Zombies below heard the commotion, and a few candle-headed figures stumbled over towards them.
