“Ghost General, and he understands Daoist Arts. What does that mean?”
I found his words somewhat difficult to comprehend, frowning as I looked at him. Zhang Chao wore a similarly puzzled expression.
The middle-aged man smiled and said, “By the way, let me introduce myself first. My name is Zhou Zhen. It seems you haven’t told me your name yet.”
“Lin Hao, his name is Lin Hao,” Zhang Chao quickly interjected, and I nodded in acknowledgment.
“Alright, then I’ll call you Little Lin.”
Zhou Zhen nodded and continued, “Actually, ghosts are not as simple as you think. They have ranks too, and that Master Yun is quite a troublesome character.”
“Ghosts have ranks? What kind of ranks?” Both Zhang Chao and I asked simultaneously.
“Ordinary ghosts are called Wandering Spirits and Wild Ghosts. They act purely on instinct without much thought. Those who cultivate some Daoist skills become Ghost Soldiers. After that come Ghost Generals, Ghost Commanders, Ghost Kings, and even more powerful beings known as Demon Emperors.”
“A Demon Emperor can’t really be classified as a ghost anymore; such characters are beyond our imagination.”
After saying this, Zhou Zhen turned his gaze toward me, his tone becoming serious. “That Master Yun is a Ghost General, and he must have been a Daoist adept in Maoshan Techniques during his lifetime, which makes him quite formidable.”
As the saying goes, a rogue is not frightening; what’s frightening is a rogue with culture. If this ghost also possesses Daoist Arts, he would undoubtedly be more terrifying than an educated rogue.
Thus, Zhou Zhen helplessly remarked, “I’m quite troubled facing him. Originally, I planned to set up a formation to trap him last night, but unexpectedly, he managed to slip away.”
Listening to Zhou Zhen, I began to understand the situation better; it seemed he had encountered a worthy opponent. In terms of Daoist Arts, Zhou Zhen was not much stronger than Master Yun.
I frowned slightly. “So according to you, he will come back to harm me?”
"Mm." Zhou Zhen nodded and said, "It seems like there's something about you that attracts him. Otherwise, if he simply wanted to take your life, you would have been dead by now."
"And there's one more thing."
Zhou Zhen suddenly added, "Are you being haunted by a female ghost?"
I replied angrily, "You're talking about Mu Yan."
"Oh, so that's her name."
Zhou Zhen nodded and then seemed to ponder for a moment. "She gives me a strange feeling."
"Strange?" I looked at Zhou Zhen in confusion.
"It seems like she doesn't want to harm you; rather, it feels like she's trying to save you from this Ghost General."
"That's impossible! Damn it, if it weren't for her haunting me, how could I have encountered this ghost? How could I have ended up like this, caught between the living and the dead?" I shook my head firmly.
"Well, I don't really understand what's going on either," Zhou Zhen said with a slight frown.
"By the way, how did you two end up together? Did you know each other before?"
I had been curious about how Zhang Chao and Zhou Zhen had gotten involved, especially since they seemed quite familiar with each other; even Uncle Zhou was being called upon.
Zhou Zhen smiled and said, "We didn't know each other. However, since I've been keeping an eye on you these past few days, I naturally paid attention to the people around you as well. It wouldn't hurt to have some help, so I reached out to him."
Zhang Chao nodded and said, "Uncle Zhou came to find me today. Everything he said was the absolute truth; I couldn't doubt it."
I nodded in agreement but still felt a bit confused. I then asked, "By the way, Chao, how did you know my heartbeat was gone?"
Zhang Chao quickly shook his head and replied, "I don't know, but when we were digging the grave, Uncle Zhou mentioned it. He said that sleeping in a coffin is like sharing a bed with a ghost. Oh, no, it's actually worse than that. When you're inside, that Ghost General is also there with you; he just happens to be attached to you."
Zhou Zhen nodded and added, "That's right. This led to Yin Qi entering your body, intertwining with your heart's meridians, causing heart failure, which is why your heartbeat stopped."
"To put it clearly, it's like your heart has died," Zhou Zhen explained.
"A dead heart can still live," I said skeptically.
Zhou Zhen replied without hesitation, "It cannot."
"Then what is happening to me?"
"I don't know."
I was at a loss for words; wasn't that just pointless to say?
But Zhou Zhen continued, "One thing is certain: there must be some secret hidden within your body that attracted this Ghost General."
I chuckled and said, "What kind of secret could possibly be in my body that I wouldn't know about?"
"Hmph, if you knew about it, then it wouldn't be a secret," Zhou Zhen snorted.
He continued, "However, I feel that this matter should be related to that female ghost named Mu Yan."
"By the way, who is stronger between this Ghost General and Mu Yan?" I suddenly remembered to ask.
Zhou Zhen shook his head. "It's hard to say."
"Weren't you following me last night? Didn't you see them?"
"I did, but Mu Yan felt more gentle to me. She didn't have as much Yin Qi as this Cloud Ghost General. However, it seemed like the Cloud Ghost General was quite wary of her, constantly negotiating with her. In the end, he ran away, and that female ghost named Mu Yan chased after him."
Zhou Zhen said, "Generally, high-level ghosts can absolutely crush low-level ghosts when they face them. They can directly absorb and devour them to enhance their Ghostly Energy and become stronger. But neither of them did that, so I can't tell who is stronger or weaker."
I sighed helplessly. Although Zhou Zhen's answer was still unclear, one thing was certain: Mu Yan was definitely not an ordinary ghost; at the very least, she was on the same level as the Cloud Ghost General.
"By the way, aren't ghosts supposed to be unable to appear during the day?"
I suddenly recalled this perplexing question.
"Who told you that ghosts can't appear during the day?" Zhou Zhen said with a look of disbelief. "That's nonsense. Ghosts just don't like sunlight; they aren't afraid of it. The reason people say ghosts can't appear during the day is that there are rarely any sightings. But with your heavy Yin Qi, it's only natural for you to encounter ghosts."
"Alright, let's hurry up and bury the grave, then we can leave."
After glancing at me, Zhou Zhen urged, implying that I should take action.
Zhang Chao nodded in response, pushing the coffin lid down firmly to seal it tight.
As I looked at the pitch-black coffin, a surge of anger welled up inside me.
The predicament I found myself in—neither human nor ghost—was all thanks to him. In that moment, I steeled my resolve and grabbed the iron shovel from the ground, striking down hard.
Even though the coffin was sturdy, it couldn't withstand being buried underground for so long. With the force I used, I managed to dig a large hole in the center of the coffin, causing it to crack open.
"What are you doing?" Zhou Zhen suddenly shouted, his face turning pale.
I replied, "He caused me this much suffering. Digging up his coffin and grave is the least I can do."
"You’re looking for death."
"Either way, he will harm me."
That's how I felt. Since he wouldn't let me live in peace, even in death, I would ensure he wouldn't find rest either.
Little did I know that Zhou Zhen's next words would make my face turn ashen.
He said sternly, "A person lives with a home; that is the realm of the living. After death, they descend into the grave; that is the realm of the dead. Both realms are places of residence. By digging up his coffin now, when the earth and water invade and snakes and insects take over, you are denying him peace. Without a place to rest, he won't be able to gather Yin Qi for cultivation. He will surely seek revenge on you."
"Either way, it's death for me. Let him take his revenge."
Although I felt a bit scared, I was too angry at that moment to back down.
"Hmph, you think it's that simple," I retorted.
Zhou Zhen scoffed again, "I'm afraid this matter will bring disaster to your family." The Sister of the Dark Wife was fierce.
Upon hearing this, my face turned a deep shade of crimson, and I opened my mouth but couldn't utter a single word. I regretted it immensely; if my outburst truly brought calamity to my family, I would never forgive myself.
In fact, Zhou Zhen's words were accurate, and they soon proved to be true.
That day, I called home, and everything seemed fine at that time.
But by the next day, I received a call saying that my mother had suddenly fallen ill. She was convulsing and foaming at the mouth, just like someone afflicted with Sheep Madness.
My mother had always been healthy; she had never suffered from any serious illness, let alone Sheep Madness.
Moreover, the illness struck so suddenly, almost overnight. When I received that call, I instantly understood.
My mother's sudden illness was undoubtedly connected to the Cloud Ghost General.
