"Friend, how old are you? What's your name?"
"My name is Cao Xin, and I'm three years old." The boy looked far older than three; he seemed at least eight. Bai Zhuo knew that the boy had actually died three years ago. Under the scorching July sun, a spirit like him, an Earthbound Spirit, would dissipate in less than a minute under such harsh sunlight. However, the boy, holding Bai Zhuo's hand, showed no signs of discomfort from the sun. On the contrary, he reached out his hand toward the sun as if trying to catch it.
"Cao Xin, do you remember where you lived?"
"I remember! In the three buildings of Liangye District."
"Oh, the Liangye Villa Complex! You used to be quite wealthy!"
Cao Xin, even considering his time alive, was only eleven years old and had a limited understanding of what wealth meant. Suddenly, he pointed at a middle-aged man in the crowd. "Big brother, that man smells like my mom!"
Bai Zhuo looked at the man. He was carrying a Peach Wood Sword and wore simple black and white clothing with a handlebar mustache. At first glance, he resembled a Con Artist. The man seemed to sense Bai Zhuo's gaze; his eyes sparkled as he noticed her strange behavior. His right hand appeared to be holding something. He pulled out a willow leaf and began applying something with his index finger on it before brushing it across his eyelids. Those in the know recognized it as Corpse Mud Eyebrow from the Yin Yang Realm—one of the lowest-grade yet most convenient tools that allowed one to see things from the Underworld for a limited time. The so-called Cow's Tear wasn't as miraculous as people believed; it required special processing before it could reveal Underworld entities.
After applying the corpse mud beneath his eyelids, the man gasped! What did he see? In broad daylight, he spotted a recently formed ghost wandering hand-in-hand with a young boy—an Earthbound Spirit! This completely overturned all laws within the Yin Yang Realm! The man's worldview had been shattered; at least within this realm, everything he believed had changed. He wanted to approach for a closer look, and Bai Zhuo had the same intention. Suddenly, the man pulled out his phone from his pocket, listened for a moment, then hurriedly hailed a taxi and left.
"He got away..."
"That's okay; let's go to your home first. After we see your mom, I'll help you reincarnate!"
"Okay! As long as I can see my mom, I'll be satisfied!"
Bai Zhuo was a half-hearted, part-time Onmyoji. He could see and touch spirits, which gave him a slight advantage, but he had no ability to guide the souls of the deceased. The Security Brother thought for a moment and replied, "There are thousands of people coming and going here. Those wealthy folks don’t usually greet me. If you’re looking for someone, you might be asking the wrong person. How about you register and leave a number? I can ask around for you."
"Oh, that's not necessary. Could you let me in for a moment?"
The Security Brother remained polite but firmly declined, "I'm afraid that won't work. Only residents of the complex can enter without an acquaintance to guide them. It's my duty; I can't let you in."
Wealthy families sure were troublesome. Bai Zhuo nodded in understanding and left his phone number behind before "leading" the boy, Cao Xin, away.
"Big brother, aren't we going to look for mom anymore?"
"Cao Xin will stay at big brother's house for now. We'll come back to find her in a couple of days, okay? I promise you that as long as your mother is still in the Underworld, big brother will definitely help you find her!"
"Okay! As long as I can see mom, it doesn't matter where I stay!"
When Bai Zhuo returned home, he looked at the empty courtyard and the ten or so vacant rooms with a sigh. "Just missing a mistress..." He had failed at matchmaking today but ended up bringing back a "child." Bai Zhuo felt quite bewildered. Cao Xin took a deep breath and exclaimed in surprise, "Wow! This place feels so comfortable!"
Bai Zhuo had never studied Feng Shui but had heard about it from his grandfather. His own Siheyuan subtly contained the Azure Dragon Water Absorption Tomb Formation and the Three Yuan Xuan Kong Feng Shui layout, making the Spiritual Energy here abundant compared to ordinary places! He pointed to the front gate and said, "Cao Xin, as long as you don't step out of this door, you won't return to that place that binds you. In a couple of days, big brother will take you to find your mom!"
The boy beamed with joy. "Okay! I believe in big brother!"
Bai Zhuo nodded. He didn't know how many pitiful Earthbound Spirits he had saved, some of whom had turned into malevolent spirits after committing evil deeds, while others, like the boy, were still not fully aware. Today, the boy was infected by Zhang Ni's rage and tripped her. “House for Rent: Inner Ring Ninth Siheyuan, twelve vacant rooms, abundant Spiritual Energy, convenient for commuting, fully furnished, two thousand for three months, utilities self-managed. Interested parties please contact 186…” After finishing the notice, Bai Zhuo chose a busy spot nearby and posted it on a telephone pole outside. However, he didn’t notice that there was something strange about that yellow paper.
The next morning, just before dawn, a knock on the door startled Bai Zhuo awake from his dreams. Still groggy and forgetting to put on his glasses, he rushed to open the gate of the yard. Standing there was a young girl pulling a large suitcase. She wore a heart-patterned t-shirt and denim shorts, with white canvas shoes on her feet. Her smooth legs were so striking they made one’s eyes hurt. Her straight black hair lay gently across her chest; she had an exquisite oval face with thick eyebrows and almond-shaped eyes. A small beauty mark graced the corner of her right eye, making her look even more endearing.
Upon seeing Bai Zhuo, the girl took an unnoticeable step back and asked softly, “Excuse me, is this place for Renting a House?”
Her voice was gentle and pleasant. Bai Zhuo suddenly realized that she was My Tenant is a Female Ghost; she just arrived a bit too early. Yawning widely, he helped the beautiful girl with her suitcase and accidentally brushed against her hand—it was icy cool and felt nice. “You can choose any room; they’re all empty. We can discuss rent and contracts later. I’ll take the master bedroom; you came too early—you should go back and get some more sleep.” After placing down her suitcase with another big yawn, he turned to leave.
The girl wasn’t in any hurry; she took a deep breath and revealed a satisfied smile. This place truly had abundant Spiritual Energy—the Azure Dragon Water Absorption Tomb Formation—and great Feng Shui! However, she couldn’t understand why there was both a Pomegranate Tree and a Willow in the middle of the Village.
