"Wait a moment."
A crisp voice rang out, belonging to Jiang He.
Seeing everyone looking at him, Jiang He spoke up, "Previously, I was fifty percent sure that Li Weiyi was the murderer, but after hearing what Li Weiyi said, the possibility of him being the murderer is only ten percent."
Wang Chao looked puzzled. He gazed at Jiang He and pondered for a moment before responding, "From all angles we've analyzed, Li Weiyi's words align with both motive and timing. His method of killing and some specific details also match what we saw at the scene."
Xu Yiman added, "Yeah, you were so sure Li Weiyi was the murderer before. Why do you think he isn't now? I really don't understand you."
Jiang He countered, "Probability must be assessed based on all available information. Without additional conditions, it might seem like a hundred percent certainty, but once those conditions are introduced, the probability can drop to zero."
Xu Yiman sighed in resignation, "As long as you're happy."
"Let me point out a few aspects where I believe the information and deductions don't match," Jiang He said quickly.
"First, based on the information left at the scene, I am eighty percent sure that Wu Guifeng committed suicide. However, according to Li Weiyi's statement, he killed Wu Guifeng, which contradicts my deduction."
With that, Jiang He turned to the detective he had previously struck: "After seeing the knife embedded in Wu Guifeng's body, I conducted an experiment with this detective. The result showed that if Wu Guifeng was murdered, then the murderer should have held the knife in reverse."
Jiang He picked up a nearby pen and mimicked the murderer's actions. He held the pen in reverse: "The side facing outward is the blade; the side facing my body is the back of the knife. Only in this way could the murderer inflict such wounds on Wu Guifeng's body. Moreover, they would need to maintain the right angle; otherwise, with this stabbing method, it's likely that the knife would exit through his abdomen."
Jiang He shook his head. "If it really was Li Weiyi, then why would he use such an awkward position to kill? That seems very strange."
Everyone fell silent for a moment before Wang Chao spoke up again: "Is it possible that he pulled the knife out from He Hui Juan's corpse in reverse? It's not unusual to draw a knife that way. Li Weiyi rushed out in a panic; he might not have had time to adjust his grip. You also think Wu Guifeng could have been murdered."
Jiang He nodded and stabbed himself lightly with the pen: "Your point is valid; however, the probability of suicide is clearly much higher. But as long as there's a theoretical possibility, anything can happen. Probability theory is quite fascinating; even something as high as ninety-nine percent doesn't guarantee certainty."
"But that's just one of several doubts," Jiang He continued. "According to Li Weiyi's account, after hearing noise from the entrance hall, he immediately went out to check and then killed his mother there. However, at the scene in the entrance hall, I didn't see any blood spatter marks on the floor or walls. There were also no footprints—none at all."
Wang Chao chimed in again: "When we arrived, we stepped over that pool of blood without disturbing it too much to preserve the scene; I'm sure those security guards did too. I think there might have been spattered blood marks initially, but after Wu Guifeng started bleeding again, new blood would cover any previous marks—that's quite likely."
Jiang He set down the pen. "There is only a bloody handprint left by Wu Guifeng on the doorknob. After killing, Li Weiyi should have blood on his hands, yet when he burst out of the door, he left no trace at all. Moreover, after stabbing Wu Guifeng, there wasn't a single drop of blood on his clothes or shoes. This doesn't add up."
The points raised by Jiang He were indeed hard to explain. If it weren't for Li Weiyi's luck in avoiding bloodstains, then it meant that Li Weiyi might not be the murderer at all. However, all current evidence pointed to Li Weiyi, and Wang Chao could only consider the former.
Wang Chao said, "Let's ask him together later, including where he threw his phone. If he can match those details, then we can basically close the case."
Jiang He nodded.
Xu Yiman had been standing quietly to the side, listening to the conversation between Jiang He and Wang Chao about the murderer. Suddenly, a strong curiosity arose within her. A seemingly simple case could have thousands of different possibilities, and these individuals were tasked with finding the one truth amidst the chaos.
"However, there's one point we should also consider," Xu Yiman cleared her throat and joined the discussion. "If a person has killed their wife or mother, think about how much torment they must endure. Especially if this person didn't actually commit murder but ended up killing someone close to them; that would be even worse. Wouldn't they want to find the real murderer?"
Wang Chao agreed with Xu Yiman's words. "What you said makes a lot of sense. Analyzing a criminal's psychology was part of our university curriculum. In ancient times, this would be considered a blood feud that must be avenged. If Li Weiyi really didn't do it, then he would have to tear the murderer apart."
Jiang He dismissed this notion. "Although you've seen people who can read a criminal's thoughts, I still think that's not very reliable. Especially psychology; it's merely a summary of general experiences and doesn't play a significant role. Guessing what others are thinking in this way is one thing, but I would never apply that to solving a case."
Wang Chao shrugged. "In your words, seeing is believing. I believe you will encounter such a person."
Jiang He continued, "This kind of reasoning is based on speculation. If you use uncertain information to deduce a conclusion, then that conclusion is built on ambiguous information; it might not even exist at all. How can you determine the probability of that conclusion?"
Wang Chao and Xu Yiman were left speechless. They both knew Jiang He's argument was flawed but couldn't figure out how to counter it.
After all, humans are not machines; they are emotional beings. And emotional beings inherently possess the ability to see through others' minds—it's just that some are stronger than others.
If that expert had top-notch skills in this area, Jiang He was practically at zero.
The interrogation resumed, focusing on several key doubts.
Xu Yiman had originally completed her task and could have returned to the City Bureau by now; it was almost time to clock out. However, she seemed intrigued and genuinely wanted to understand whether Li Weiyi was indeed guilty in this case. Regardless of the outcome, she wanted to hear what Li Weiyi had to say.
“Li Weiyi, now that we’ve reached this point, can you explain how you killed He Hui Juan and Wu Guifeng? Describe your actions at that time,” Wang Chao said, rolling a sheet of A4 paper into a long strip and handing it to Li Weiyi.
Li Weiyi took the paper, first gripping it with his right hand in a reverse hold, then stabbing straight down. Next, he used the same grip to awkwardly stab and pull diagonally downward. Seeing this, a heavy weight lifted from Wang Chao’s heart. He glanced at Jiang He beside him, indicating that Li Weiyi was likely the murderer.
Jiang He remained silent, merely observing Li Weiyi.
Li Weiyi tossed the paper roll onto the ground and said, “That’s how it was. Any questions?”
Wang Chao didn’t respond but continued to ask, “What about the bloodstains on your clothes and shoes?”
“I threw them away,” Li Weiyi replied. “I ran out, but I had blood on me. Although it wasn’t much, I was scared, so I changed into formal attire at work.”
“Where did you throw them?” Wang Chao pressed.
Li Weiyi extended his hand. “I thought about committing suicide by jumping into the river, but I didn’t have the courage, so I tossed my clothes into the river.”
“Specifically where?” Wang Chao asked meticulously about this information.
“Er Long Street area; I’m not sure of the exact spot,” Li Weiyi answered.
Wang Chao continued to inquire, “Where did you throw your phone?”
“I forgot. I remember throwing it shortly after leaving the area, but I was too scared at that time to recall exactly where. However, I didn’t throw it hard; it was still intact when I tossed it,” Li Weiyi replied earnestly.
“Did you turn it off?” Wang Chao asked.
Li Weiyi shook his head. “No, I didn’t turn it off.”
At that moment, a detective walked in from outside and whispered something in Wang Chao’s ear. Wang Chao nodded repeatedly. After a moment, he instructed the detective to keep an eye on Li Weiyi while he called Jiang He and Xu Yiman outside.
"What's wrong?" Jiang He asked.
Wang Chao closed the door and said, "Our colleagues in the criminal police team found something while checking the surveillance footage. They spotted Li Weiyi's figure on a camera at Chengshun Street Intersection. Chengshun Street is not far from Li Weiyi's home; it takes about fifteen minutes to walk there. This old district is open, so there are no cameras that captured whether Li Weiyi returned home."
"However," Wang Chao glanced toward the interrogation room, "this raises some important questions. The time was around ten forty in the morning, which matches up. And just now, you saw Li Weiyi's movements; although awkward, they align with the direction of his injuries. As for his clothes and phone, that might take a significant effort to track down."
Wang Chao looked at everyone. "Let's wrap this up and hand over the evidence to the court."
He shook hands with Xu Yiman. "Thank you so much. Come visit us sometime, but I hope it's not because of a case."
Xu Yiman smiled. "I wish I never had to work either, but that's not possible. In our city alone, on average, two people are born and two people die every day. Doctors can never take a break, and of course, forensic doctors can't either."
Wang Chao sighed. "That's true. By the way, Jiang He, I really want to thank you for your help this time; if it weren't for you..."
But when Wang Chao looked around, there was no sign of Jiang He. "Wait, he was just here. Where did he go?"
A police officer spoke up. "He left while you two were talking. Also, he borrowed three hundred yuan from me—Captain Wang, you'll be paying him back..."
