A man's voice emerged from the page, accompanied by an autoplay video. The background remained shrouded in darkness, obscuring the surroundings. The Criminal Consultant spoke in a distorted voice, hidden beneath a large cloak that concealed everything but a mask blending almost seamlessly with the darkness, save for a single tear of blood that was clearly visible.
Jiang He noticed the string of numbers in the lower right corner and remarked, "Compared to the previous site, the number of people here is significantly lower. Only three thousand one hundred thirteen individuals have entered this site. Clearly, these three thousand one hundred thirteen are people who have purchased masks."
"There are already quite a few votes down below," Xiao Liu added.
Guan Deng scrolled down the page and saw that there were already several candidates listed. Old Shao counted and found there were over ten names on the list, each accompanied by a photograph and basic information about the individual. The top-ranked candidate was a young woman who appeared to be in her twenties.
Next to her photo was her basic information. The girl's name was Zhang Shan, twenty-one years old, currently working as a kindergarten teacher at Dragon City Garden Kindergarten.
"Let's take a look," Old Shao suggested.
Guan Deng clicked on the image and found himself on a secondary page that disclosed more about Zhang Shan's misdeeds. In the image, Zhang Shan was seen pulling on a child's ear, her face twisted in rage, resembling a demon.
The child's face was blurred out, but it was evident that their ear had turned red from being yanked.
Below the photo was additional text regarding Zhang Shan:
"Zhang Shan, twenty-one years old, graduated from Yuzhou Normal University with a degree in Early Childhood Education at twenty. She later took a job at Yuzhou City Garden Kindergarten. Many parents have reported that Zhang Shan has a terrible temper.
She brings her frustrations from life into her work, often resorting to hitting and verbally abusing her students. More importantly, she threatens the children not to speak about it. Faced with Zhang Shan's dual threats, they dare not tell their parents when they go home. If we hadn't seen the scars on the children while bathing them, this beast of a teacher would still be unaware of her own cruelty.
We all hope to have children someday; if teachers like this continue to exist, what will happen if your child encounters such an educator? So far, Garden Kindergarten has only made the simple decision to dismiss Zhang Shan, which does nothing to heal our wounds. On behalf of my child and other parents at Garden Kindergarten, I implore the Criminal Consultant to eliminate this wicked beast. I hope everyone can support me and cast your vote for Zhang Shan."
This candidate had received the most votes so far; it seemed everyone had little tolerance for an abusive teacher.
"Do you think this Criminal Consultant will take action against this teacher?" Xiao Liu asked.
"There's definitely a possibility," Old Shao replied.
Xiao Liu expressed his thoughts, "Is there a possibility that we could first create a fake identity and then have everyone at the police station vote for this person? If the votes for our candidate surpass those of Zhang Shan, wouldn't that mean Zhang Shan is no longer in danger?"
Guan Deng shook his head. He switched to a note-taking window and typed, "No, if we manipulate data on such a large scale in a short time, the backend will be able to see it. Since this Criminal Consultant can set up the site, he would easily notice if someone is maliciously voting. At that point, he might realize that the police are already aware of this site."
"Then is there no other way?" Xiao Liu asked.
"There is," Old Shao replied. "Xiao Liu, immediately withdraw the nearby police officers and have them secretly protect Zhang Shan. We need to investigate Zhang Shan's situation."
"There are comments below," Jiang He said.
Indeed, there were comments below, and Jiang He began reading through them one by one.
"Teachers nowadays are like this; none of them have morals."
"Such a young child; I can't believe they could do something like this."
"I strongly demand these scoundrels be punished."
"Criminal Consultant, when are you going to take action? Do you need my help then?"
Jiang He remarked, "If we comment on something, it might draw out this Criminal Consultant."
However, just as Guan Deng was about to leave a comment, a prompt appeared on the screen that read: "You are not yet a Member of our site. Please register before commenting."
Next to it was a registration button. Guan Deng clicked on it and was presented with four digits and an address: Yutai Road, Chain Supermarket, 2nd Floor, Locker.
The four digits were 1024.
Jiang He commented, "It seems there are users even more core than the core users. What do you call this? Double sandwich?"
Hearing Jiang He's words, Old Shao chuckled and said, "So you can tell jokes now."
"It seems we need to make a trip," Jiang He replied.
"We can't let our guard down on either side," Old Shao continued. "Here's the plan: Jiang He, Guan Deng, Xu Yiman, you three will stick with this lead and see what this Criminal Consultant is up to. Once Yuan Jun returns, Xiao Liu, Yuan Jun, and I will go find Zhang Shan, arrange some police presence, and see if the Criminal Consultant targets Zhang Shan."
Everyone nodded in agreement.
Just then, there was a knock at the door, followed by a deep male voice saying, "Old Shao, Jiang He, open up. I'm back."
"What did you find?" Jiang He asked directly.
Yuan Jun looked somewhat deflated and conflicted. After a moment of hesitation, he spoke up. "I tracked that child to a place you wouldn't believe."
"What place?" Xiao Liu inquired.
"The orphanage," Yuan Jun revealed. "That child is an orphan. I spoke with the Orphanage Director, who told me something interesting. He said that every year in Dragon City, many abandoned orphans end up in their care. Very few are adopted, so they grow up in the orphanage. Although there are some funds from above, it's still not enough to cover expenses."
"To earn a little extra to support the orphanage's costs, the director often finds simple tasks for the children to do to make some money. About three years ago, a mysterious person approached the orphanage proposing a partnership."
"Deliveries?" Jiang He asked.
"Exactly," Yuan Jun confirmed. "This mysterious individual donates five hundred thousand each year to the orphanage and has the children help deliver items for him. The director knew this wasn't straightforward; if something seems too good to be true, it usually is—either the person has ulterior motives or their business isn't clean."
Yuan Jun sat down and grabbed a nearby water bottle, taking a swig. "The Orphanage Director knows there’s no profit in his institution; therefore, this person's goods must be questionable. He said the children are innocent; they’re just seven or eight-year-old kids who don’t understand what’s inside those packages. Although he never opened them himself, he sensed something was off. If they get caught, they should just take him away."
Yuan Jun added, "He always knew this day would come but couldn't bear to see the children go hungry or miss out on education. Old Shao, you once told us that you sought us out because we all lost our parents. Even though we've grown up and can earn our own living now, I still understand that feeling. So I didn’t take any action; I just came back like this."
Old Shao remained silent; he had chosen these team members himself and was well aware of their backgrounds.
Old Shao spoke up, "The Criminal Consultant is responsible for this. He used children to deliver messages because they are more innocent and easier to conceal. This matter falls solely on the Criminal Consultant; it has nothing to do with anyone else. He doesn't even know who that mysterious person is, right?"
Yuan Jun's expression shifted from sorrow to joy as he replied, "That's right, that person never showed their face from start to finish. If it weren't for the Criminal Consultant giving him fifty thousand in advance, the Orphanage Director would have thought this was a prank."
Old Shao nodded, "Good, since that's the case, let's split up. Jiang He, if you have any news on your end, notify me immediately. I will do the same if I get any information here. Regardless of whether this station is something the Criminal Consultant wants us to see or not, we need to follow this lead."
Guan Deng found the address of Garden Kindergarten through internal inquiries. Yuan Jun drove, taking Old Shao and Xiao Liu towards Garden Kindergarten. Meanwhile, Jiang He was driven by Xu Yiman, heading with Jiang He and Guan Deng to the Chain Supermarket on Yutai Road.
On the way, Guan Deng clutched his laptop tightly, constantly monitoring the page.
Xu Yiman spoke while driving, "I have a feeling something big is about to happen."
"Something big?" Jiang He responded. "It might just be that the New Year is approaching soon. That's the biggest event for everyone in the country. I remember when my great-aunt was still alive; every New Year's Eve she would make dumplings for me and we would watch fireworks together from the balcony on the second floor. It was our annual tradition."
"Do you miss her?" Xu Yiman suddenly asked.
"Me?"
Jiang He looked out of the car window; vendors selling fireworks were everywhere now, and the festive atmosphere was growing stronger.
Yet Jiang He still couldn't grasp what it truly meant to miss someone.
