At that time, she was just a yellow-haired girl. Later, she fell in love with Li Tong, and we drifted apart. We hadn't seen each other again until after the wedding. I never expected that in the blink of an eye, she had grown into such a beautiful woman. The childishness of her youth had faded, replaced by the gentle elegance of a mature woman. Wearing a nurse's uniform only accentuated her tender demeanor.
"It's been so many years since we last met, and the junior has blossomed into such a beauty," I remarked, clicking my tongue in admiration. I used to tease her, saying she looked like a little girl.
"What a pity, senior; you never even glanced my way back then," she replied, looking at me with a mix of grievance and playfulness in her eyes.
Back then, for the sake of Li Tong, I kept my distance from all the girls. Even though I had a slight fondness for Ye Qingchen, I knew deep down that my heart belonged to Li Tong. I had to be a devoted person to be worthy of her choosing me.
Seeing me lower my head in silence seemed to make her a bit disappointed. Her voice turned languid as she said, "Alright, alright, you should rest now; patients shouldn't talk too much."
The next day, there was a fruit basket on my bedside table. Just by thinking about it, I knew who had sent it.
As my mind cleared up, I recalled everything. That day, just as I was about to leave, an impatient Song Xiang had rammed his car into me. It resulted in a fracture in my left leg and severe trauma to my head. Before I lost consciousness, a passing boy called for an ambulance.
Fortunately, I was lucky enough not to be killed in the accident.
Thinking back to two months ago when Li Tong had me sign a life insurance policy, a chill ran down my spine. At that time, I thought she was just concerned about me. That woman is truly malicious!
During my hospital stay, it was Ye Yichen who took care of me with great attention.
"Senior Lin, this is the yam and pork rib soup I made for you. Please drink it while it's hot," she said with a gentle smile.
But I fell into deep thought.
I had pursued Li Tong for two years and had been married to her for three. Now, here I was, lying in the hospital after nearly dying in an accident. If only she had come to see me even once, perhaps I would have softened and forgiven her. Yet, she remained so indifferent, treating our five years together as mere playthings.
I painfully closed my eyes.
"Senior, what's wrong?" Ye Yichen asked in a panic, reaching out to touch my forehead.
"You're not running a fever; what’s really going on?"
Seeing her on the verge of tears touched my heart, but I had no energy to respond. She silently shed tears, and I felt a pang of guilt.
"Junior, your hospital service is quite considerate—beautiful company and delicious soup! Maybe I'll just stay here forever!" I joked nonchalantly, but she looked at me seriously.
"That's nonsense! There's no reason to stay in the hospital indefinitely!"
She covered my mouth with her hand.
Just as I was about to speak, the door swung open, revealing Li Tong and Song Xiang standing at the entrance.
A flicker of surprise crossed her face, quickly replaced by a change in expression.
"Well, Song Xiang, you keep accusing me of cheating, yet here you are flirting with this little nurse in the hospital!"
She walked to the bedside and removed Ye Yichen's mask.
"I want to see which vixen is trying to seduce my husband!"
"Isn't it you? You're Ye Yichen from the Literature Department?"
She was taken aback, her gaze darting back and forth between me and Ye Yichen.
Then she nodded to herself, a look of realization dawning on her face.
"Well, you two old lovers, how long have you been at it?"
I couldn't be bothered to respond to her question.
Ye Yichen, however, hurriedly waved his hands in explanation.
At my breaking point, I considered calling the police directly, but I hesitated, fearing it would tarnish Ye Yichen's reputation.
The more anxious I became, the happier they seemed, as if they had a hold over me.
