After years of saving diligently, Yuwei finally managed to gather enough for the down payment on a new house. With the thought of needing to buy a car soon, she excitedly posted about it on social media.
Little did she know, this would mark the beginning of Zhou Mumu's trouble.
“Dad, say something! My mom fell ill and was hospitalized because she was taking care of you. Besides, I’m your only daughter, and my mom’s greatest wish is to see me get married. Can you really bear to see me tie the knot without a house or a car?”
Qiao Yuwei's father and Zhou Mumu's mother were in a blended family. Her uncle had been weak and sickly for years, with Auntie taking care of him devotedly.
Earlier this year, Auntie fell ill from overwork and has been in a coma in the hospital ever since.
Because of this, her uncle always felt guilty towards Zhou Mumu and often reminded them to be accommodating towards her.
But now that their weddings were clashing, Zhou Mumu insisted on borrowing their car and house. It was a difficult situation for her uncle, as he felt torn between both sides.
Seeing her uncle silent, Zhou Mumu immediately turned her attention to Yuwei: “Anyway, your car and house are meant for the wedding. What’s wrong with letting me use them first? Don’t forget that I’m your sister.”
This wasn’t the first time Zhou Mumu had asked to borrow things.
At first, she only borrowed small items from them, but gradually her requests grew more expensive, and her attitude shifted from friendly to one that suggested they owed her something.
While Yuwei could tolerate many things, this was about her wedding—the one romantic moment in her life—and she refused to back down.
Yuwei firmly replied, “We have everything arranged for our wedding. There’s a scheduling conflict; we can’t lend anything.”
"Why can't you borrow it? I see it's just someone not wanting to lend it. Besides, if there's really a conflict, can't you just change the wedding date?"
Hearing this, I couldn't hold back any longer and retorted, "Why should we change our wedding date? We bought our new car and new house ourselves. We haven't even used them for a day, and now you want to borrow them just to save face. Do you think that's appropriate?"
"Our family can talk without you butting in. You and Xiao Wei haven't even gotten your marriage certificate yet, and you're already shouting at me. If you do get married later, won't you just ride on my back and make a mess of everything?"
"Don't take it out on Lili. I told you, we've been planning this wedding for a long time. If we change it now, everything will be thrown into chaos. Can we be reasonable here?"
"Fine! So you're siding with your wife now. I get it; I'm the outsider in this family. I'm an outsider, so I'll just leave!"
As Zhou Mumu spoke, tears began to fall, her pitiful appearance tugging at Uncle's heartstrings.
"Alright! I'll make the decision here. Xiao Wei's car and house will be prioritized for your use. We're family; let's not treat each other like outsiders."
"Forget it, Dad. If Lili isn't willing, then let's prioritize her. I can just muddle through it."
Her words left me stunned.
"Sis, what do you mean by that? What does this have to do with me?"
"Even though I don't have a house or a car, I still have the right to pursue happiness in marriage. If you're really unwilling, then I might as well not get married at all. Consider it a sacrifice for the two of you, alright?"
Alright, this hat caught me off guard, and with a single sentence, all the contradictions were thrown onto me.
Fortunately, Yuwei was sensible and immediately shot back, "Zhou Mumu, you’re the one who wanted to change the wedding date. If you want to show off, figure it out yourself. Don’t drag us into your mess!"
"Enough! Stop arguing! I’m laying it out here today. If you dare not help your sister, don’t even think about calling me Dad!"
"Well, let me be clear too. I won’t lend you the car or the house. Lili and I are going ahead with our wedding as planned. No one is allowed to interfere!"
After that outburst, my uncle stumbled in anger and fell heavily to the ground, still cursing Yuwei for being an unfilial son.
Yuwei and I hurriedly called for an ambulance, but Zhou Mumu made an excuse and ran off.
Fortunately, the old man just had a fit of anger; it wasn’t serious. He just needed to be hospitalized for a few days of observation.
Just when we both sighed in relief, the hotel for the wedding suddenly called me.
"Ms. Xia, hello. The price for booking the adjacent banquet hall with an additional twenty tables is four hundred eighty thousand. How would you like to proceed with the payment?"
