He glanced at the textbook in Su Xiaonuan's hands, identical to the one Shen Hao held, and mocked, "The library? What are you going to do there? Read the same book?"
Lin Chen snatched the book from Su Xiaonuan's hands and threw it to the ground. The pages scattered everywhere, much like Su Xiaonuan's current feelings—chaotic and disordered.
Su Xiaonuan stared in shock at Lin Chen's actions, her eyes wide open as if she couldn't believe what was happening before her. Tears glistened in her eyes, swirling with a mix of grievance and confusion that made it hard for her to breathe.
Seeing this, Shen Hao immediately stepped in front of Su Xiaonuan, his brow furrowed and his gaze sharp as he glared at Lin Chen. "Lin Chen, what are you doing? Why are you treating Xiaonuan like this?" he scolded angrily, a slight tremor in his voice as he struggled to suppress his fury.
Lin Chen glared back at Shen Hao, his chest heaving violently like a beast ready to explode. "What am I doing? I'm talking to my girlfriend; what does it have to do with you?" He pushed Shen Hao aside forcefully, his tone unyielding.
"Girlfriend? Since when did you become Xiaonuan's boyfriend? Ask her if she agreed!" Shen Hao retorted defiantly, his eyes resolute, filled with determination to protect Su Xiaonuan.
Lin Chen sneered, "Do I need her permission? That's none of your business!" He swung his fist and struck Shen Hao hard in the face.
Shen Hao staggered from the blow, a trickle of blood seeping from the corner of his mouth, but he didn't back down; instead, it ignited his fighting spirit even more. He retaliated with a punch, and the two began to grapple fiercely, exchanging blows without yielding.
More and more students gathered around, murmuring about this sudden brawl.
Su Xiaonuan watched the chaotic scene unfold before her, and finally, tears streamed down her face uncontrollably. She ran away crying, ignoring the shouts behind her, desperate to escape this heart-wrenching place.
She ran aimlessly until she found refuge in an alleyway from her childhood in Old Town. The narrow passageway, weathered walls, and familiar cobblestone path seemed to silently comfort her wounded heart. She crouched in a corner, burying her head between her knees as she sobbed softly.
Aunt Wang returned from grocery shopping and, as she passed by the alley, she inadvertently caught sight of Su Xiaonuan, who was crying in the corner.
She set down her basket and hurried over to Su Xiaonuan's side, asking with concern, "Nuan Nuan, what’s wrong? Why are you hiding here and crying all alone?"
Aunt Wang's kind face and warm voice provided a bit of comfort to Su Xiaonuan. She looked up, her eyes filled with tears as she choked out her grievances and confusion.
"Aunt Wang, Lin Chen... he... he threw my book on the ground and even got into a fight with Shen Hao..."
Su Xiaonuan spoke in broken sentences, her tone heavy with hurt and bewilderment.
"I don’t understand why he would treat me like this. I... I like him, but he... he always teases me and it makes me really sad..."
After listening to Su Xiaonuan's woes, Aunt Wang smiled knowingly, the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes deepening like a blooming chrysanthemum.
"Silly child, Lin Chen has always been a bit proud. When he likes someone, he tends to tease them—that's his way of showing affection!"
Aunt Wang gently patted Su Xiaonuan's shoulder, her tone soft as if comforting a child.
"Really?" Su Xiaonuan looked up at Aunt Wang, uncertainty written all over her tear-streaked face.
"Of course it's true!" Aunt Wang nodded affirmatively and began to recount stories from Lin Chen's childhood.
"Did you know that Lin Chen was quite the mischievous one when he was younger? He often climbed trees to raid bird nests or went fishing in the river, getting himself all muddy..."
Aunt Wang's voice carried a hint of laughter as if she were transported back to those joyful childhood days filled with laughter.
"Once, he climbed a tree to get a bird's nest and accidentally fell, breaking his leg..."
As she spoke, Aunt Wang gestured animatedly as if everything had happened just yesterday.
"At that time, you cried even harder than he did! You clung to his leg and refused to let go, insisting on accompanying him to the hospital..."
Aunt Wang looked at Su Xiaonuan with eyes full of warm memories.
Listening to Aunt Wang's stories, Su Xiaonuan gradually stopped crying, a faint smile appearing on her face. She could almost see herself and Lin Chen as innocent children playing together and growing up side by side…
"Alright now, stop crying, little girl." Aunt Wang lovingly ruffled Su Xiaonuan's hair.
"Lin Chen is just sharp-tongued but soft-hearted; he actually cares about you."
Aunt Wang picked up the basket from the ground and stood up, preparing to leave.
"Aunt Wang, thank you," Su Xiaonuan said as she stood up, wiping the tears from her face and offering a grateful smile to Aunt Wang.
Aunt Wang chuckled and waved her hand dismissively. "Silly child, there's no need to be polite with me. Hurry back now; you don't want that boy Lin Chen to worry."
With that, Aunt Wang picked up her basket of vegetables and turned to leave the alley.
Su Xiaonuan watched Aunt Wang's retreating figure, her heart filled with warmth and gratitude. Taking a deep breath, she turned and walked in the direction of home.
