The afterglow of the setting sun spilled over the community road, stretching Su Xiaonuan's silhouette long.
She arrived at her doorstep, her steps slightly hesitant, her heart filled with both concern for Lin Chen and a sense of relief over the misunderstandings. After a moment of hesitation, she took a deep breath and pushed the door open.
In the living room, Lin Chen was sitting on the sofa, holding a book, his brow slightly furrowed as if lost in thought. Hearing the door open, he looked up and saw Su Xiaonuan standing at the entrance, a flicker of barely noticeable panic crossing his eyes.
He set the book down and walked over to her. “Nuan Nuan, you’re back,” Lin Chen said, his voice somewhat low and tinged with regret. “About what happened today…” He paused, seemingly gathering his thoughts. “I… I didn’t mean to knock your book over.”
He scratched the back of his head, his gaze evasive. “Actually… I got jealous, which is why I ended up confronting him.”
Su Xiaonuan listened quietly, her eyes fixed on Lin Chen as she observed every subtle expression on his face. Seeing his slightly awkward demeanor, her last doubts completely vanished, and a relieved smile appeared on her lips.
“I understand now,” Su Xiaonuan said softly, her tone gentle. “I’m sorry for misunderstanding you earlier and for getting angry.” She lowered her head, nervously twisting the hem of her shirt. “I should have asked for clarification before jumping to conclusions.”
Lin Chen watched Su Xiaonuan’s sincere apology, feeling the tension in his heart ease. His heart softened as he reached out to gently ruffle her hair, his eyes filled with affection.
“Foolish girl, why apologize? It’s my fault for making you worry.”
They exchanged smiles, and all previous barriers and conflicts melted away. A warm atmosphere enveloped them as the golden rays of the setting sun streamed through the window, casting a shimmering glow over them.
“By the way,” Lin Chen suddenly remembered something and turned to retrieve a delicate little box from his desk drawer. “This… is for you.”
He handed the box to Su Xiaonuan with a hint of shyness on his face. Curiously, she accepted it and opened it to find a beautiful necklace inside, adorned with a sparkling star pendant.
She looked up in surprise at Lin Chen and exclaimed, "It's so beautiful! Thank you, Lin Chen."
"I'm glad you like it," Lin Chen replied, feeling a warm surge in his heart as he gazed at Su Xiaonuan's beaming smile.
"I have a gift for you too."
Su Xiaonuan pulled out a handmade doll from her pocket and handed it to Lin Chen. "It's not very expensive, but... I made it myself. I hope you like it."
Lin Chen took the handmade doll and examined it carefully. It was an adorable little bear, slightly rough around the edges but filled with sincerity.
He gently placed the handmade doll into his pocket, his eyes brimming with emotion.
"I really like it," Lin Chen said, taking Su Xiaonuan's hand and walking to the window, pointing at the distant starry sky. "Do you remember? We used to come here to stargaze together when we were kids."
Su Xiaonuan followed the direction of Lin Chen's finger, and the night sky was dotted with twinkling stars that shone enchantingly.
"I remember! We even promised to explore the universe together someday."
"That's right," Lin Chen said with a slight smile, his eyes sparkling with memories.
"You always pointed at the brightest star and said that was your dream—that you wanted to be someone who shines like a star."
Listening to Lin Chen's words, Su Xiaonuan's thoughts drifted back to that childhood filled with dreams.
She turned to look at Lin Chen and noticed that his profile appeared particularly gentle under the starlight.
Leaning lightly against Lin Chen's shoulder, she listened as he continued recounting their childhood adventures of stargazing together.
Lin Chen's fingers gently stroked Su Xiaonuan's hand, feeling the warmth of her palm as they quietly nestled together, savoring this moment of tranquility and beauty.
Su Xiaonuan rested her head softly on Lin Chen's shoulder, listening intently.
"Back then, you insisted I call you 'Brother Chen,' saying you would always protect me."
Unable to help herself, Su Xiaonuan laughed and playfully poked Lin Chen's cheek.
Lin Chen tilted his head slightly to avoid her finger, feigning annoyance as he frowned. "Who said that? I clearly said I would protect you."
Su Xiaonuan squinted her eyes mischievously and smiled, "Oh? Protect me? How come I remember someone often stealing my snacks and making me cry?"
Lin Chen cleared his throat awkwardly and shifted his gaze away. "Well... that was just childish ignorance."
He reached out and gently tapped Su Xiaonuan's nose. "Now I'm very mature and composed."
"Come on, let's go for a walk in Old Town at the park we used to visit when we were kids."
