On the third day after our divorce, my ex-husband stood at my doorstep with his luggage, looking pitiful. "Wife, I'm bankrupt. Please take me in."
Considering our past, I decided to temporarily let him stay. After all, my grandmother's greatest wish before she passed away was to see us together again. But when he sneaked into my room in the middle of the night and started getting handsy, I was taken aback.
He explained with a hurt expression, "There was a cockroach on the floor."
Of course, I didn't believe him. Grabbing a slipper, I headed to the living room, and sure enough, a large cockroach swaggered out. He gazed at me affectionately and asked, "So, are you willing to take responsibility for me?"
The morning sunlight streamed through the curtains into the bedroom as I opened my eyes, still feeling the blush from last night. Remembering Fu Zhenting's "invasion" and my flustered reactions made me cover my face in embarrassment. "Lin Jiayi, you really have no dignity!" I quickly got out of bed and urged Fu Zhenting, who was still sleeping on the couch, to go back to his room. "Hurry back to your room! What would people think if they saw you like this?"
After changing clothes, I grabbed a basket and headed to the market. The bustling market was filled with lively chatter and vendors calling out their wares. When I reached my usual Meat Stall, Uncle Meat Seller greeted me warmly. "Xiao Yi is here! What meat do you want today? Should I get some ribs for your husband to replenish him?"
I felt my cheeks flush and quietly replied, "Uncle, please don't say that. He..."
"Oh come on, don’t be shy," he laughed heartily while deftly chopping ribs. "Your man looks good; he must treat you well." I bit my lip and didn’t argue; inside, I felt sweet as honey.
When I returned home, a delicious aroma wafted from the kitchen. I walked to the kitchen door and saw Fu Zhenting wearing an apron, frying eggs.
Sunlight streamed through the window onto him, outlining his tall figure. I paused for a moment before realizing what was happening and softly asked, "What are you doing?" Fu Zhenting turned around with a gentle smile. "Making your favorite breakfast. Want to see if my cooking skills have improved?"
At the dining table, we sat across from each other, enjoying a rare moment of tranquility. Fu Zhenting placed a fried egg on my plate and said, "I'm sorry about yesterday; I was too impulsive."
I lowered my head and took a sip of porridge before quietly saying, "It's okay; I know you didn't mean it." Fu Zhenting looked at me with soft eyes. "As compensation, let’s go shopping for some clothes today."
I set down my spoon. "No need; I have enough clothes." Fu Zhenting insisted, "Come on; just consider it giving me a chance to make it up to you." After hesitating for a moment, I finally nodded.
We arrived at a high-end mall in the city center. As we entered a tailored suit store, the salesperson immediately approached us with surprise flashing in their eyes as they looked at Fu Zhenting.
Even though he was dressed simply in casual wear, his aura couldn't be hidden by his attire. The salesperson enthusiastically introduced the new arrivals while Fu Zhenting casually browsed without any intention of buying.
I tugged at his sleeve and whispered, "Why not buy a suit?" Fu Zhenting shook his head. "No need; these clothes don't suit me." Leaving the tailored suit store left me puzzled since Fu Zhenting used to love wearing suits.
Next, we visited a women's clothing store where I spotted a light pink dress. The salesperson quickly brought over a matching men's shirt and enthusiastically recommended it. "This shirt pairs perfectly with your dress; your husband would look very handsome in it!"
I was momentarily stunned along with Fu Zhenting, and the atmosphere became a bit awkward. I quickly explained, "We are not..."
"Oh, there's no need to be shy," the Salesperson said with a smile. "Couple outfits are so sweet! Love should be shown off!"
In the end, under the enthusiastic recommendation of the Salesperson, Fu Zhenting and I bought the couple outfits.
When we got home, I changed into the new dress and spun around in front of the mirror.
Fu Zhenting leaned against the doorframe, watching me with a gentle smile on his lips. "You look beautiful," he said sincerely. My cheeks flushed as I looked down and fiddled with the hem of my dress. "Thank you."
The room fell silent for a moment before Fu Zhenting stepped closer to me, gently lifting my chin with his fingers, his gaze deep. " Jiayi, I have something to tell you." My heart raced as I looked at him nervously and asked, "What is it?"
"Actually, I am not bankrupt," Fu Zhenting said calmly, but his words hit me like a bombshell. I widened my eyes in disbelief as I stared at him.
Fu Zhenting continued, "I arranged all of this on purpose to create an opportunity to get close to you."
My mind went blank as I instinctively took a step back, murmuring, "Why?" Fu Zhenting let out a bitter laugh. "Because I didn't want to lose you." I felt a wave of suffocation in my chest; all my emotions were stuck in my throat, leaving me speechless. Turning around, I ran into the bedroom and slammed the door shut with a loud bang.
Fu Zhenting hurriedly followed to the bedroom door and knocked. " Jiayi, open the door and let me explain." The room was silent; there was no response. " Jiayi, I know you're angry, but please listen to me; it's not what you think," Fu Zhenting's voice carried a hint of urgency. Still, there was no reply.
He lowered his hand in despair and leaned weakly against the door. After a long while, he sighed deeply and turned back to the living room, picking up his phone to call his best friend.
"Hello? Where are you?" Fu Zhenting's voice sounded tired. On the other end of the line, his friend's cheerful voice came through: "I'm at the taekwondo gym; what's up?"
" Jiayi... she locked herself in her room and won't come out," Fu Zhenting said in a low tone.
"What happened? Did you two have a fight?" His friend's tone immediately turned tense. Fu Zhenting briefly explained what had happened. "You! You're so clever!" His friend scolded him exasperatedly. "Just wait; I'll be right over!"
After hanging up, Fu Zhenting anxiously paced back and forth in the living room.
About half an hour later, the doorbell rang. Fu Zhenting quickly opened the door to find his friend rushing in. "Where's Jiayi?" she asked while changing her shoes. Fu Zhenting pointed toward the bedroom with a dejected expression. His friend walked up to the bedroom door and knocked firmly. " Jiayi! It's me! Open up!"
There was still no response from inside. " Jiayi! If you don't open this door soon, I'm going to kick it down!" His friend raised her voice. After a moment, the door clicked open. I stood there pale-faced with red-rimmed eyes; it was clear that I had been crying.
"What happened?" His friend grabbed my hand with concern. I choked back tears as I recounted everything that had transpired. After listening, she sighed and said, " Jiayi, I know you're really angry and feel deceived. But think about it—Zhen Ting did all this because he loves you."
I turned my head away, remaining silent. "Think about it. If he hadn't pretended to be bankrupt, would you still be with him?" my friend continued. "He just wants to get close to you again, to pursue you once more."
I bit my lip, my eyes reddening again. "And he gave up his family inheritance for you. Isn't that enough sincerity?" My friend gently patted my shoulder. I fell silent, my heart beginning to waver.
"Come out. We need to talk this through," she said, pulling me by the hand and leading me out of the room.
Fu Zhenting rushed over as soon as he saw me. " Jiayi..." I kept my head down, avoiding his gaze. Fu Zhenting stepped in front of me and said sincerely, " Jiayi, I'm sorry. I lied to you. But everything I did was because I love you. I didn't want to lose you, so I resorted to this desperate measure."
I lifted my head to look at him, a hint of grievance in my eyes. "Do you know how scared I am of losing you?" Fu Zhenting's voice trembled slightly. "I'm afraid you'll go back to him. I'm afraid I'll never see you again."
As I listened to his explanation, my heart gradually softened.
Fu Zhenting took out a delicate box from his pocket and opened it, revealing a dazzling diamond ring lying inside. He knelt on one knee, looking at me with deep affection. " Jiayi, will you marry me? I will spend my life loving and protecting you." I gazed at the man before me, tears blurring my vision as I nodded lightly. A happy smile spread across Fu Zhenting's face as he carefully placed the ring on my ring finger.
"I..." I sniffled, tears still swirling in my eyes, but a faint smile appeared on my lips. "I do."
Fu Zhenting stood up and pulled me tightly into his embrace. I wrapped my arms around him as well, burying my head in his chest and feeling the strength of his heartbeat. We held each other quietly, as if time had stopped flowing. Outside the window, sunlight poured onto the balcony, adding a touch of warmth to the room.
After a long while, Fu Zhenting gently released me, his thumb tenderly wiping away the tears on my face. "Silly girl, why are you crying?" His tone was affectionate, filled with love. I laughed through my tears and lightly punched him on the arm. "It's all your fault!"
