Unexpectedly, He Pingli found us. Judging by the number of people present, she must have known our movements for quite some time. I should have anticipated this; after we entered the hall, we hadn’t seen any security personnel. In such a large hall, having only two guards at the entrance was indeed unusual.
However, as soon as we stepped into the hall, we were captivated by the various surgeries happening inside the small room. We completely overlooked the oddities around us and directly coerced the doctor in a white coat to come over, never realizing that we had already been discovered.
He Pingli slowly ran her fingers along the blade of a knife that looked incredibly sharp, glinting ominously under the light. Before long, her finger was cut by the knife, and drops of blood began to flow. Yet, she seemed unfazed. She gently brought her finger to her lips and lightly sucked on it.
We were left dumbfounded by this series of actions, unsure of what He Pingli meant by it. I took a moment to observe my surroundings; the walls were lined with freezers, leaving little space for movement. With a few more people entering, the area suddenly felt cramped.
Dezi had locked his gun in a cabinet that night and hadn’t brought it out. At this moment, there was truly no way out. If a fight broke out, we would barely have time to react before being taken down by an attack from across the room. Fortunately, I had already sent a message to Juan Juan; they should be on their way now.
Thinking about this, our priority was to buy time and hope that Juan Juan and her team could arrive in time. I wondered if He Pingli would give us that opportunity.
Both sides remained silent for a long while until He Pingli finally spoke to me: “What are you trying to achieve? I noticed your skepticism towards my words during the day. But I’ve always given you face; as long as you don’t meddle, everything would be fine. Yet you chose not to follow that advice.”
“You just had to come here and court disaster,” she continued while playing with the knife. “I know that with your intelligence, you would eventually find this place. But I don’t know when you would come. If that’s the case, it would have been better for you to arrive earlier than later; at least we could take control.”
It seemed that He Pingli was quite confident in her plans. I could use her mindset to wait for Juan Juan's arrival. With this in mind, I deliberately delayed by saying, “So you’re saying that our discovery of this place was intentional on your part? You wanted us to see what this Spring's Return is really about? You know we’re aware of your experiments?”
He Pingli skillfully wielded a long knife in her hand; it was clear she was trained in combat. However, there were no calluses on her hands, suggesting she likely practiced wearing gloves or something similar. Otherwise, I would have noticed during our first encounter. Just from this detail alone, it was evident how cunning He Pingli truly was.
“Of course! Otherwise, do you think there are only two guards in such a large place?” He Pingli replied. “We saw you two through surveillance as soon as you turned the first corner. Only those two guards outside are unaware of what’s happening; everyone else has long been on high alert.”
“It’s laughable that you two are still putting on a show for yourselves; it’s quite amusing. I don’t understand why my sister rated you so highly before; it’s truly entertaining—like watching two clowns—yet here you are, caught in our grasp.” He Pingli sneered.
I didn’t care about He Pingli’s opinion of us, but I did catch something significant in her words: she mentioned her sister. I didn’t know who He Pingli's sister was, but it wasn’t hard to deduce that she must know me.
Analyzing from this angle, the only person who had crossed paths with me besides Criminal was Criminal himself—no one else matched that description. If it wasn’t Criminal, then it had to be Special Case Team Two; however, one member of that team was female and younger than He Pingli—impossible! Moreover, based on their identities alone made it clear that such a connection couldn’t exist.
Thus, the only woman who had crossed paths with me was Zhao Mingkun. If that were true, did this Spring Return Nursing Home receive funding from Zhao Mingkun's organization? With this thought in mind, I furrowed my brow and slowly asked, “Is your sister Zhao Mingkun?”
Upon hearing this, He Pingli paused for a moment, then burst into laughter. "So it seems you are a bit clever after all. Indeed, from the moment you started to suspect us, we knew this place was no longer safe. Tonight is the last experiment; we must retreat to a more secure location. So, it's fine to share some things with you."
"Zhao Mingkun is indeed my sister. Speaking of which, I owe my presence here to you," He Pingli chuckled and said to me. "If it weren't for my sister's mission failure in Italy, this project wouldn't have fallen to me. In that sense, you could say you're my benefactor. However, if I can bring you back, I could rise to the same level as my sister."
Hearing He Pingli's words stirred mixed feelings within me. Although I had the upper hand during my encounters with Zhao Mingkun, I had never managed to capture her, which had always been a thorn in my heart. I never expected to encounter someone from that organization again while being here.
"What are you conducting these experiments for?" I asked. "This is an expensive endeavor and likely has no end in sight. It will probably fail; why are you doing this?"
"There are some things in this world that someone has to do," He Pingli replied earnestly. "Any scientific advancement comes with sacrifices from some individuals, but we do it for the benefit of everyone. If sacrificing hundreds can lead to progress for all humanity, then it's worth it! Someone has to take on these tasks. If that makes us villains, then the world needs villains! We have chosen this misunderstood path!"
As she spoke these words, He Pingli's face displayed a fervent expression that seemed utterly sincere. I believed this was her true sentiment, much like what the man in the lab coat had said earlier. I couldn't help but wonder what methods the organization had employed to instill such fervor in them, bordering on a kind of religious devotion.
With that in mind, I replied seriously, "Since ancient times, monarchs have operated under this principle: sacrificing hundreds to save thousands. Not only did those elderly individuals not consent, but even if they did, it doesn't justify such actions! No life should be treated as expendable. If everyone in the world were to live forever while I alone faced an early death, I would be terrified."
"But if it meant I could age and die alongside the Multitude of Beings, as an individual, I would still possess that courage," I continued. "Therefore, your organization will be dismantled; those within it will face legal consequences!"
He Pingli shrugged nonchalantly, appearing indifferent as if she wouldn't take my words to heart. Then she said, "Ha! You people are just obstacles to scientific progress! I don't know why the organization hasn't allowed me to kill you but instead wants me to bring you back."
I fell silent; it was similar when I faced Zhao Mingkun before. The organization behind them seemed never intent on taking my life; otherwise, Zhao Mingkun had countless opportunities to kill me on the ship but chose not to. What purpose did they have for keeping me alive? What use was I to this organization?
"What kind of organization are you?" I realized continuing this debate would yield no answers and decided to ask another question.
"Our organization?" He Pingli replied. "That's something I can't disclose. It's classified information; there are many things you’re better off not knowing. Regardless, you'll be going with us."
"Going?" I asked. "Where?"
He Pingli responded, "I remember mentioning that for safety reasons, this base is no longer usable; we will naturally move to the next one. I'm aware your colleagues are on their way and will arrive shortly. Do you think I'm standing here just to chat with you?"
"I know you're stalling for time, but this delay isn't yours to control," He Pingli said. "You think too highly of yourself and too little of us."
As she spoke, a figure parted the crowd and approached He Pingli. "Bai He, all the equipment and supplies have been moved out. We can evacuate at any time. What do you think? Should we leave?"
He Pingli nodded and replied, "Let's go. Take those two with us."
The people behind her nodded in agreement, and a few of them restrained us, pulling us toward the exit. One of the security guards went to lift the person in the white coat who was still collapsed on the ground. However, He Pingli drew her long knife and stood in front of him. The man was startled and turned to look at her.
He Pingli sheathed her knife and said, "It won't be long before our colleague, Captain Shao, finds this place. If they can't locate us, they'll keep searching. But if we leave someone behind, at least they'll have something to report, which will lessen the intensity of their investigation."
"And besides," He Pingli continued, "there always needs to be a scapegoat. No matter what he says when he wakes up, without substantial evidence, do you think the police will believe him? He doesn't even know what's really going on; the trail ends with me. Do you understand?"
"Understood." The man clearly hadn't anticipated that He Pingli had considered so much and hurriedly agreed.
He Pingli smiled and lightly tapped the man's face with the back of her knife. "So there are some things you still need to learn. When we leave here, make sure to erase all traces of ourselves. Leave no clues behind. Anyone who fails to do so will face severe consequences!"
"Understood," everyone shouted in unison.
