Now we can only hope that Six Feet Three Inches hasn't arrived in this neighborhood and doesn't know that we are lying in wait here. A few of us had our walkie-talkies ready, hiding within the community, while several detectives went to the monitoring room. The members of the Special Investigation Team waited in cars outside the neighborhood.
The time was around four in the afternoon. Winter nights fell quickly, and by six o'clock, it would be completely dark. I was in one car with Yuzelin, while the rest of the Special Investigation Team members were in another vehicle. To avoid suspicion and prevent Six Feet Three Inches from noticing us, we kept the engines off, leaving the inside of the car shrouded in darkness as cold winds blew in, forcing us to wrap our clothes tightly around ourselves.
However, it would still be two hours before nightfall, but we couldn't rule out the possibility that Six Feet Three Inches might come to retrieve his Pendant at dawn. After all, we were playing a game of timing with him, and it was very likely that he would hurry back soon.
Inside the car, we dared not smoke or make loud noises; we could only watch the flow of traffic and crowds outside. We engaged in quiet conversation, discussing various topics. We had already talked enough about the case, and there wasn't much left to discuss, so our conversation drifted to our university days and our early experiences as detectives, including our romantic histories.
Yuzelin said, "You were known as a love guru back in college. With a male-to-female ratio of seven to three at our school, you found a girlfriend right away, which made us all envious. But not long after graduation, you two broke up, which left everyone feeling a bit regretful."
I shook my head and replied, "There was nothing I could do; we were from different places. After graduation, it turned into a long-distance relationship, and eventually, we just parted ways amicably."
Yuzelin chuckled and continued, "After your breakup, did you end up causing trouble for a lot of girls?"
I quickly shook my head. Although Juan Juan wasn't here, I couldn't help but shiver at the thought and turned to look at Juan Juan in the car behind us. Of course, I couldn't see her. A strange heaviness settled in my heart—how had I become so thoroughly captivated by Juan Juan?
Thinking about this made me say, "Interestingly enough, shortly after my breakup with my ex-girlfriend, I was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Team and became a detective. At that time, Yang Xiaojuan was an intern forensic doctor at the Yuzhou City Police Department; she had started a few months before me. As we spent time together, we ended up together."
"That makes it seven years," I said with some sentimentality. "I hadn't realized until now that I've only been in two relationships in my life; I'm heading toward love's grave."
Yuzelin remarked, "Seven years is quite a long time; it's about time to get married. A woman's youth is far more precious than a man's. Seven years ago, she was a beautiful girl in her early twenties; now she's thirty. It's time to give her a home and a stable life."
I nodded and then said to Yuzelin, "After talking so much about my life, shouldn't you share yours? You're not from Tianlan City; why haven't you returned to your hometown after all these years? You have no family or friends here."
At this point, Yuzelin showed an expression of helplessness. He adjusted his seat back and leaned down slightly before slowly saying, "To be honest with you, I came to Tianlan City for a girl. It was quite dramatic back then—youthful times indeed. But later on, being young and foolish led to our separation."
"After being apart for a year, I met my current wife, and we've been together ever since. Initially, after breaking up, I planned to apply for a transfer back to my hometown. However, the leadership at the Police Department valued me highly at that time, so I stayed on—and here I am five or six years later," Yuzelin sighed.
Back in college, Yuzelin never sought out relationships; he spent his time immersed in endless study and training. The police academy generally discouraged dating; as our former director used to say: "You're college students—especially passionate young men like us—what's the point of dating? When those hormones kick in, go run laps on the field."
So our romance was always a secret. If we were caught hugging in public, it would be an immediate warning. Someone once famously said, "It can be admired from afar but must not be touched," which has since become a classic saying. Yuzelin firmly adhered to this principle, but unexpectedly, after graduation, he traveled thousands of miles away from his hometown for a woman.
I had never heard this story before, so I said, "It's a rainy day and there's nothing else to do, so let's hear it."
Yuzelin sighed and began, "It's a long story. Back when I was still in school, I developed feelings for a girl from the police academy next door. Our school had strict rules, and we didn't have much free time, so for four years, none of you knew I was seeing someone..."
I replied, "No wonder you were always sneaking out, claiming you were just getting us food. Turns out it was all premeditated! So how long did this go on? When did it start?"
Yuzelin chuckled, seemingly reminiscing about those good times. "It was during the second half of my sophomore year. You guys were busy with competitions and didn't notice anything unusual about me. She was a freshman at the nearby Finance Academy. We shared common interests and habits, and we met during an outing."
I patted Yuzelin on the shoulder and said, "You kept that from us for three years! You really hid it well; we had no idea. You should have been an undercover agent."
Yuzelin laughed heartily and replied, "And yet you always beat me to everything; I've never managed to outdo you."
"And then what happened?" I asked. "Did you come right after graduation?"
"Yeah," he said. "Back then, I was young and impulsive. In a moment of passion, I followed her to Tianlan City. I started interning at the police station without thinking too much about it. But later on, I realized that love is very different from marriage. Love is between two people, but marriage is not that simple."
"By then, we had already been living like a couple for two years. Once my job stabilized, I discussed marriage with her. But when I went to meet her parents, they disapproved of my job as too dangerous and pointed out that I had no house or car."
Yuzelin looked at me with a helpless expression and continued, "Honestly, her parents weren't bad people; they didn't demand too much regarding the house and car. They just thought my job was too risky and could lead to problems. We both know this is what concerned them the most."
"I was young and hot-headed back then; I didn't understand that their demands for a car and house were just to make me reconsider," Yuzelin said. "They genuinely cared for their daughter, but at the time, I couldn't see that—I thought they were just materialistic. Then something happened that I wasn't prepared for; I got scared and backed down. After that, I never saw her again."
Listening to Yuzelin's somewhat melancholic tone, I couldn't grasp what had transpired between them but could sense his lingering sadness or perhaps helplessness. He continued, "If I had another chance, maybe I'd take on the responsibilities of a man."
"Sometimes even a police officer can be weak," Yuzelin reflected.
Just as I was about to ask him what exactly happened that led to their breakup, we heard a voice crackling through the intercom—it was Dezi's voice. It wasn't loud, but we could hear clearly as Dezi reported, "Target spotted! Target spotted! Six o'clock direction, approaching the neighborhood. Requesting instructions! Requesting instructions!"
I hurriedly glanced through the rearview mirror and indeed saw a tall figure walking towards the community from behind us. He had concealed something under his clothing, but his height was undeniable. A person could wear elevator shoes to appear taller, but there was no way to make oneself look shorter.
Looking at him again, his robust build matched the descriptions given by Dr. Sun and the two detectives. This man must be the murder accomplice of Guo Guoqing that we had been desperately searching for—the six-foot-three giant.
"I was young and impulsive back then; I didn't understand that their demands for a car and a house were just meant to deter me," Yuzelin said. "They genuinely cared for their daughter, but I couldn't see that at the time. I thought they were just materialistic parents who only valued money. Then something happened that I wasn't prepared for; I backed down, and since then, I've never seen her again."
Listening to Yuzelin's somewhat melancholic tone, I couldn't grasp what had transpired between them. I could only sense that she still felt some sadness or perhaps helplessness. Yuzelin continued, "If I had another chance, maybe I would take on the responsibilities of a man."
"Sometimes, even a police officer can be a coward!" Yuzelin remarked with a sigh.
Just as I was about to ask Yuzelin what had happened to cause their complete separation, I heard a voice crackling through the intercom—it was Dezi's voice. It wasn't loud, but we could hear it clearly as Dezi said, "Target spotted, target spotted, six o'clock direction, heading towards the community. Requesting instructions, requesting instructions."
I quickly looked through the rearview mirror again and confirmed that a tall figure was indeed walking towards the community from behind us. He had concealed something under his clothing, but again, his height was unmistakable. A person could wear elevator shoes to appear taller, but there was no way to make oneself look shorter.
