Rao Jie finally reacted.
Her words were incredibly clear, as if she were a news anchor reporting on something unrelated to herself. "If this is the reason you want me to stay, then I refuse! You can hire high-standard housekeeping services to handle all your troubles! They can do it according to your preferences and standards. As long as you can afford it, you can find someone who is obedient and understanding. After a month of living together, you'll get used to it. There will always be someone who can replace me; I am not needed at all!"
Rao Jie's words struck like thunder, her beautiful black eyes resembling dark pearls that had lost their luster.
Wu Rong was momentarily stunned. He had imagined countless responses from Rao Jie—hesitation, refusal, resistance—but he never expected this. It felt as if his confession had not brought them closer but had instead pushed Rao Jie further away. The gentle and soft-spoken Rao Jie could display such a cold and resolute expression, keeping him at a distance.
Wu Rong found it hard to believe what he was hearing and seeing. Perhaps it was the panic of being rejected for the first time that overwhelmed him. He couldn't help but ask, "Did you not understand what I meant?"
Rao Jie remained expressionless; she had never shown such a demeanor before, as if another personality had been forced out of her. "I understand perfectly."
Wu Rong anxiously pressed on, "Then you…"
Suddenly, Rao Jie shot him a fierce glare, gritting her teeth as she growled, "Get away!"
Wu Rong was taken aback by Rao Jie's sudden intensity and instinctively released her, staring at her in shock.
Rao Jie couldn't control herself; she breathed heavily with anger, stood up, and frantically adjusted her clothes. She felt a tightness in her chest and her eyes began to sting. She wanted to hit him, wanted to curse at him, but… without hesitation, she turned to leave.
Wu Rong snapped back to reality, furrowing his brow as he quickly reached out to grab Rao Jie's arm. He had a whirlwind of questions that needed answers; how could he let her walk away so easily?
"Wait! Do you… do you not like me? Why don’t you like me? Haven't I been good enough for you? What have I done wrong? Don’t you understand? I never thought I could feel this way about a girl… how can you… not accept this?"
Rao Jie didn’t know whether she should be angry or not, but she truly felt like spitting blood at that moment. All she wanted was to never see Wu Rong again! Somehow finding the strength, she managed to shake off Wu Rong's grip.
"I'm sorry, but I can't afford such an honor. Even if you've helped me a lot and I’m very grateful to you, I am not obligated to offer myself in return. I will repay you in other ways, but being your girlfriend is impossible! Besides, I can make my own decisions. I've decided that I'm moving out right now. If all your feelings are based on habit, you'll forget about me—this 'habit'—very quickly!"
Rao Jie did not look back, never glancing at Wu Rong, but when it was time to leave, she was still caught by the shoulder.
Wu Rong's posture suggested he wanted to pull her back into his embrace.
Rao Jie spoke coldly, each word laced with ice, chilling Wu Rong to the core. "And about your recent actions that have taken advantage of me, I find them extremely distasteful. I ask you, Professor Wu, to conduct yourself with dignity! If you dare to treat me this way again, I will definitely report you to Wu Xin!"
Wu Rong's body stiffened, feeling as if even his breath had been frozen.
Was Rao Jie truly disgusted with him?
