Everything was ready. Xiao Yefeng said, "Mouse Team! Have you cracked the energy distribution map of Ge Qing Gou?"
"We're working on it, but they are equipped with thermal shields, and the satellite is trying to break through the interference!" came the response from Mouse Team.
"I can't wait any longer. I'm going in first; you can search using my locator!" With that, Xiao Yefeng dove into Ge Qing Gou.
Ge Qing Gou was a rare ecological area in Huaxia, perfectly preserved with towering trees and dense foliage that obscured the entire valley. Although it was morning, a chilling aura lingered in the air.
Even though ghosts wouldn't appear at this hour, Xiao Yefeng activated his Yin-Yang Eye. After all, the Yin-Yang Eye had the ability to detect Yang energy. As long as his line of sight was filled with rich greenery, activating the Yin-Yang Eye would allow him to see traces of living creatures.
Unbeknownst to Xiao Yefeng, as he entered Ge Qing Gou, two others were also making their way into the area from different directions. These two were Mei Chuanqiong, who possessed Dracula's Tooth, and Mo Fei, who had been sent on a mission. While two groups were advancing within Ge Qing Gou—one comprised of Easterners moving swiftly from the northwest corner directly toward the valley's bottom, and the other group consisted of Westerners who had just taken villagers hostage as guides, also heading toward the valley's depths under their guide's direction.
All five groups were rushing toward the valley bottom. However, the rugged mountain paths made progress slow. Ge Qing Gou was not an ordinary valley; it was a complex terrain that required time to navigate even with Earth Dweller guidance. The two groups that entered first were familiar with the routes and moved quickly. Xiao Yefeng and his companions were unfamiliar with the paths but had their own ways to find shortcuts.
Both Xiao Yefeng and Mo Fei had positioning systems; a straight line between two points was the shortest route, allowing them to cut through obstacles swiftly. For Mei Chuanqiong, it was even simpler; Mei Mo'er’s necklace contained a tracker, so all five teams were racing toward the Blood Dripping Tree at top speed.
As he proceeded cautiously, Xiao Yefeng arrived at the valley bottom just as the sun began to cast an orange hue over everything. He found himself right behind a group of Westerners. At that moment, he spotted a massive tree at the valley's base—most likely the Blood Dripping Tree. However, it turned out that the Westerners had arrived first and were already hiding in preparation to ambush Mei Chuanqiong.
With remarkable courage and skill, Xiao Yefeng stealthily infiltrated the Westerners' encirclement. Two armed Westerners crouched in a pit dug out of leaves nearby, completely unaware of his presence. Their conversation was crystal clear to Xiao Yefeng as he listened from behind them.
"Hey! Tom! How is Mr. Thompson planning to deal with those Huaxia people?"
"How would I know? I guess once we get our hands on them, we'll have to kill them to silence them!"
"I actually kind of like that girl; she's hot!"
"I think you're just feeling hot after getting kicked! Is there any reaction down there?"
"It's been fine for a while now; why don't you give it a try?"
Xiao Yefeng nearly retched at hearing these two burly Westerners talk. Especially when he saw one of them reach into the other's pants after asking his question—it completely disgusted him!
In an instant, he lunged forward and pinned both of these repulsive men down. As he leaped onto them, he struck down with a palm knife on the first man's back without mercy; his attack was brutal and left no room for compassion. The blow shattered the fourth vertebrae and severed nerves, sending him straight to meet his maker.
Before the second person could react, Xiao Yefeng executed the Dislocation Technique, swiftly retracting his right palm to strike down at the man's throat. He grasped the jaw with his left hand, applying reverse force. A faint crack echoed as the second man's neck snapped, his spinal cord severed in an instant, leading to his immediate death.
After the silent kill, Xiao Yefeng crouched over the two still-warm bodies of the mercenaries, surveying the setup below. From their gear, it was clear that these two were responsible for a sniping mission—one was a sniper and the other an observer. They truly made a perfect pair!
Typically, a sniper's position is the highest vantage point within a team, allowing teammates to be within sight for comprehensive support of all actions. After removing one of their communication devices, Xiao Yefeng listened in on their conversation.
“Charlie! How's it going over there?” a man's voice boomed with authority.
“Boss! Everything's fine here! Just this girl’s boyfriend isn’t cooperating!” came a somewhat flippant reply.
“Tsk! I think it's your body odor that's the problem!” another teammate teased.
“Jack, how are you and Tom doing? Any sign of the enemy?” The commanding voice suddenly inquired.
At that moment, holding the communication device, Xiao Yefeng thought for a moment before responding in their lingo: “None!” Fortunately, Xiao Yefeng was quite proficient in European languages; otherwise, he would have been caught.
However, the flippant voice chimed in again: “Wow! Jack is unusually concise today!”
Before Xiao Yefeng could respond, the one who had teased Charlie said, “You still don’t know those two? They must be busy again! Hahaha!”
Laughter erupted among the teammates through the communication device. Just then, through Charlie’s sniper scope, Xiao Yefeng spotted a mass of black mist drifting in from the southwest. At first, he thought it was an illusion, but upon reconsideration and realizing he had activated his Yin-Yang Eye, he understood that what he saw could only be either living beings or spirits. That mass of black mist was clearly a ghost!
“Heart, we have a problem! Machine Gunner, there’s an enemy behind you!” Xiao Yefeng wasn’t familiar with this team's configuration but recognized from experience that this position served as fire support within a five-man squad. He directly addressed the team role. Xiao Yefeng understood that if ghosts were attacking them, they were likely enemies since Mo Fei wasn’t a Sorcerer and Mei Chuanqiong certainly wasn’t either. Thus, he could take advantage of this situation and didn’t hesitate to betray members of the new faction.
“Not good! It’s an Eastern Sorcerer! Jerry, quickly use your Cinnabar Blade!” The captain's voice crackled through the intercom. At that moment, Xiao Yefeng realized these guys had come prepared and clearly understood the weaknesses of Eastern practitioners. Cinnabar was crucial for Sorcerers’ spells and also key to breaking various techniques. Meanwhile, Jerry at the Machine Gunner position drew a dagger from his waist and cut open his finger with it. He then used the bloodied dagger to slice across his back where Ghost Body resided.
Wow! Not bad! They even know that Yang Blood Energy can dispel Yin spirits; have today’s mercenaries become this formidable? Xiao Yefeng couldn’t help but marvel at this development. However, just then, the captain’s voice rang out again: “Jack, why aren’t you helping?”
Xiao Yefeng noticed that the captain seemed to have caught onto his issue and could only pretend to be Jack: “Firing will expose my position!”
After a brief silence on the intercom, the captain's voice suddenly sounded: “Jack, Tom has a problem; Charlie, shoot!”
After the command was given, a series of gunfire erupted, bullets raining down like raindrops towards Xiao Yefeng's position. However, the pit was only slightly elevated, and Xiao Yefeng was lying on top of two corpses, making him exposed. In that moment, he quickly pushed the bodies beneath him aside and completely hid himself under them, while the dense hail of bullets shredded the two corpses into tatters.
Hiding below, Xiao Yefeng felt a shiver run through him at the sound of gunfire. These guys were wild mercenaries! The term "wild" referred to scattered mercenaries within the Mercenary community, meaning temporary teams with no trust among them; even a minor issue could lead to violence.
Thirty-five! As Xiao Yefeng counted the gunshots until the last round of a magazine fired, he suddenly raised his head, grabbed his sniper rifle, and aimed at the position where the shots had come from. He fired a shot, and after a muffled grunt came through the communicator, Charlie's voice vanished. With a blind shot to the head, relying on his fleeting memory, Xiao Yefeng took that shot. Charlie was dead; three out of five in their team were already gone. Looking in Jerry's direction, he saw that Jerry had already fled, and judging by the distance, Jerry was now beyond the coverage area of his Yin-Yang Eye.
"Mr. Thompson, we are ambushed; plans have changed. We need to leave quickly!" A man holding a submachine gun said from a dark corner beneath the Blood Dripping Tree in the ravine.
However, this so-called Mr. Thompson seemed unconcerned as he patted the man on the shoulder. "Mr. Charles, my friend! Don't worry; I sense that what I want is nearby. I cannot leave!"
Charles glanced at the two men in black suits beside Thompson and then said, "You are not ordinary people; what do you intend to do?"
"Your duty is to protect me. This time, if you protect me successfully, all the bounties for those who died will be yours when we return to Golden Capital!" Thompson said with a smile that appeared sinister in the dim light.
At that moment, another muffled grunt came through the communicator; evidently, Jerry was dead. For some unknown reason, silence fell over the communicator that had just been lively moments before. Charles angrily smashed his communicator onto the ground and crushed it underfoot before saying, "I promise you!"
Meanwhile, Xiao Yefeng found himself under attack as his position was discovered by members of a new force. Two shadowy figures appeared behind him, attempting to drag him into an illusion to kill him. However, at that moment, Xiao Yefeng swiftly drew two daggers from the corpses beneath him. The blades had crimson grooves along their centers—clearly coated with cinnabar—specifically designed to counteract spirits.
Unlike Jerry, Xiao Yefeng did not need to cut his finger for blood. His dual daggers shimmered with azure gold Qi and bore an arc-like glow. With a swift slash, both shadowy figures were severed in half. The two Spirit Tamers injured by his Qi and cinnabar attempted to flee when suddenly a ghost wielding a bright silver spear kicked towards them.
