Chapter 78: Benevolence
Compared to the flight from Europe to China, this layover felt like just a moment's yawn. As Xiao Yefeng disembarked, he took a car to Dongxin Village. This tranquil village was familiar to him; it was his second visit. Stepping out of the vehicle, he spotted the Heroic Spirit Mountain Tombs halfway up the hill. However, it was not a day for worship, even though the year-end approached. Time had flown since his last visit, which was right after his release from prison.
Five years had passed in the blink of an eye. He wondered how Wei Zhenjiang's family was doing now. During his previous visit, he had used Zhao Yin Gate to search for the existence of Good Deeds Gate. Yet, for some unknown reason, despite being close, Good Deeds Gate seemed to have vanished from Xiao Yefeng's investigation. He could only shake his head in resignation.
After gathering food supplies, Xiao Yefeng headed toward Wei Zhenjiang's home. However, as he approached, he sensed something was amiss. The Wei Family's entrance, which should have been adorned with festive decorations for the New Year, instead displayed an Azure Lantern—a striking color amidst the sea of red lanterns throughout the village.
Three years of mourning were marked by White, Gray, and Blue Lanterns to honor their ancestors. It seemed that someone from the Wei Family had passed away!
Xiao Yefeng hurried into the Wei household. Five years later, everything remained unchanged—the house and courtyard looked just as they had before. The only difference was that the elderly man who used to sit at the gate smoking was no longer there.
His arrival naturally alerted the dogs kept by the Wei Family. Their barking disturbed all the village dogs, creating a cacophony of noise. Just then, with a creak, the door opened, revealing a somewhat haggard Wei Qingqiang.
The atmosphere was heavy with grief; it was evident that a family member had died. Seeing this scene made Xiao Yefeng's heart sink. After years apart, that kind-hearted old man had passed away. At this moment, Xiao Yefeng found himself at a loss for words.
After a moment of confusion, Wei Qingqiang's eyes brightened as he stepped forward and said, "You... you are that young man from a few years ago!"
Though still young in spirit, Xiao Yefeng had matured during his time away. A farmer by trade and accustomed to hard labor under the sun, Wei Qingqiang appeared older than his thirty-something years due to life's burdens. In contrast, Xiao Yefeng had refined his skills and maintained a youthful complexion; their differences were starkly evident. With the loss of his father and no mother in sight, Wei Qingqiang looked even more aged and sorrowful.
"Brother Wei! I didn't expect you to remember me! I happened to pass by and thought I would come find you and your father to catch up," Xiao Yefeng said.
At the mention of his father, Wei Qingqiang's expression darkened momentarily before he shook his head and replied, "Not at all. As my son says, life and death are predestined. While we live, we face many choices; perhaps after death, things will be much quieter."
Xiao Yefeng nodded in agreement; those words were quite insightful and encompassed both comfort and reality. It was only upon deeper reflection that he realized—Wei Qingqiang referred to him as his son!
Five years ago, Wei Hongtu was just about five years old. Now, five years have passed, and he is at most eleven or twelve. How could such words come from the mouth of an eleven or twelve-year-old child? Without any life experience or a hint of worldly wisdom, such statements are simply unimaginable. How could Wei Hongtu say something like that?
In the midst of these thoughts, Yang Lin, Wei Qingqiang's wife, stepped out. Upon seeing Xiao Yefeng, she was momentarily taken aback. However, there weren't many outsiders in the farming village, and she quickly recalled Xiao Yefeng's identity. After exchanging a few words, the three of them entered the house. Indeed, the old man's room had already been transformed into Wei Qingqiang and his wife's bedroom, while their original room had been given to Wei Hongtu.
This was the custom among farmers: elders and younger generations lived separately. At this time, Wei Hongtu was still at school, and since it wasn't yet time for him to return home, he was still absent. As for Xiao Yefeng, who had been a guest five years ago, Wei Qingqiang knew him well enough. The reason was simple: before his father passed away, he had instructed Wei Qingqiang to treat Xiao Yefeng as family if he ever returned.
Although he didn't fully understand it, Wei Qingqiang knew that his father possessed some special abilities and believed that anyone his father recognized must also be someone of significance. Thus, he held a certain degree of respect for Xiao Yefeng.
At that moment, Xiao Yefeng felt a wave of emotions wash over him. In this village, there was only Wei Zhenjiang with whom he could converse meaningfully, but Wei Zhenjiang had passed away three years ago. Where could he gather information about the unusual happenings in this village now?
While chatting with Wei Qingqiang, Xiao Yefeng continuously scanned the conditions of everyone in the village with his Spirit. The aura around them was ordinary; they were all just regular people. At this point, Xiao Yefeng felt somewhat helpless. He thought to himself that since Old Master Wei had also departed, there would be nothing for him to gain from this trip. Perhaps he should leave before it got too late.
However, before Xiao Yefeng could voice this thought, a dense aura of yang energy entered the village from the entrance. At that moment, the Zhao Yin Gate within the Spirit Platform flickered brightly—clearly indicating that the Good Deeds Gate was approaching!
"They're here!" Xiao Yefeng felt a surge of excitement in his heart and immediately planned to rise and step outside to see who this Lord of the Underworld was. Just as he began explaining to Wei Qingqiang, he noticed that this Lord of the Underworld was actually drawing closer to him.
With a creak, the door swung open.
"Mom! I'm back!" A boy about one meter sixty tall walked in through the door. Carrying a plush book shaped like a tiger on his back, he smiled upon seeing Xiao Yefeng and said, "You're here!"
At that moment, Wei Qingqiang angrily exclaimed, "Hongtu! How can you be so rude? Call him Uncle!"
Xiao Yefeng raised his hand to stop Wei Qingqiang and said in surprise, "Is it you?"
"Of course! Uncle Xiao, you and Dad can chat first! I'm going to do my homework!" Wei Hongtu smiled as he slung his backpack over his shoulder and walked toward his room. Meanwhile, Xiao Yefeng's mind was in turmoil; he could hardly believe that the Lord of the Underworld was actually Wei Hongtu, the grandson of Wei Zhenjiang. This rapidly growing child was only eleven years old this year, yet he was already nearly one meter sixty tall, almost catching up to his mother, Yang Lin.
"Haha, it's all my fault for spoiling him," Wei Qingqiang said awkwardly as he watched his son leave.
Xiao Yefeng shook his head and replied, "Brother Wei, your son is quite remarkable! He must have inherited the true teachings of Old Master Wei!"
Xiao Yefeng's words left Wei Qingqiang stunned. The changes in his son had begun after his father's passing. At this moment, the wisest member of the Wei Family was not the family head, Wei Qingqiang, but rather his son, Wei Hongtu.
Wei Qingqiang couldn't understand why his son had suddenly become so intelligent. However, regarding his son's unusual behavior, both he and his wife could only keep it a secret; after all, their son was still young. Yet Xiao Yefeng saw through the extraordinary nature of the boy at a glance, which naturally shocked Wei Qingqiang.
With that, the conversation between Xiao Yefeng and Wei Qingqiang became more relaxed. Soon, dinner began, and Wei Hongtu finished what he considered to be elementary homework. This time at the table, Wei Hongtu sat next to Xiao Yefeng.
As for Wei Qingqiang and his wife, after taking a bite of food, they quietly withdrew from the dinner table. Now at the table were Xiao Yefeng and Wei Hongtu, staring at each other without saying a word.
"Is it strange?" Wei Hongtu asked.
"Not really strange, just a bit unexpected. I guessed that in Dongxin Village there was only Old Master Wei as an extraordinary person. The master of the Good Deeds Gate must have some connection with him; I didn't expect it to be you!" Xiao Yefeng replied.
"Nothing much! Just routine business," Wei Hongtu said with an air of maturity beyond his years.
Xiao Yefeng continued, "Are you still Wei Hongtu? Or has Wei Hongtu already..."
"You are quite clever. Wei Hongtu should have died three years ago in that accident along with his grandfather, Wei Zhenjiang. However, I needed to carry out some routine business, so I took over for Wei Hongtu. As for whether I am him or not, I can only say that as long as I live this life, I am him!" Wei Hongtu smiled lightly.
"Is that so? The Wei Family, the Wei Family! Could it be that the Wei Family is descended from Wei Zheng?" Xiao Yefeng exclaimed in shock.
At that moment, Wei Hongtu let out a hearty laugh, his face brimming with pride. "That's right, you're quite clever. I know you've found the Gate of the Underworld, which is why I unsealed the Good Deeds Gate!" With that, Wei Hongtu gestured, and a wooden door radiating green light appeared in his hand.
Simultaneously, Xiao Yefeng extended his hand, and the Zhao Yin Gate, slightly glowing with red light, manifested in his grasp. The two Yin Gates converged, each reflecting the other without any sense of rivalry, despite both belonging to the Yin Gate.
"What now? What do you intend to do?" Wei Hongtu asked as he put away his Good Deeds Gate.
Glancing at Wei Hongtu, Xiao Yefeng said, "Recently I've learned a lot and unraveled many mysteries, but I've also gained more confusion. Can you help me resolve it?"
"I'm sorry, the only thing I can assist you with is opening the Gate of the Underworld. Just like those other two fellows, we're all just keys. If you succeed, we will benefit from your fortune and enjoy a lifetime of living; if you fail, we'll return to Yin Si to deal with our own issues! As for your doubts, only within the Gate of the Underworld will you find everything you wish to know!" Wei Hongtu replied with a smile.
"Alright! I have one question: is Yin Si not born from Earth?" Xiao Yefeng asked decisively.
Looking at Xiao Yefeng, Wei Hongtu pondered for a moment but neither confirmed nor denied it. He simply said, "You're very smart. However, I need to prepare for my studies. Our Yin Gates have already established a means of communication. After you find those two, we can continue discussing matters!"
Wei Hongtu did not clarify further; however, his demeanor had already informed Xiao Yefeng that Yin Si was certainly not as simple as Earth's Transcendence. To wield Reincarnation could not possibly originate from a Low-Level Dimension like Earth. At that moment, Xiao Yefeng understood everything: Transcendence and Yin Si had severed control over Earth and had effectively abandoned Earth's Reincarnation power for this period of time. Because if the technique succeeded, Earth would lose all humanity—would they still need Reincarnation?
