After I finally caught my breath, I gasped for air, unable to speak. Once I could manage to say something, I cursed, "Are you out of your mind?"
Wang Wei's face emerged in the dim light, his gaze piercing as he stared at me.
I was still reeling from the surprise of his earlier attack, my mood darkening. I glared at him and said, "Give me back the box, or I won’t hold back."
Wang Wei revealed a row of yellowed teeth.
"Facing death and still putting up a front."
"Are you threatening me?" I said, already rolling up my sleeves, ready to confront him.
But Wang Wei replied, "Your box hasn’t been lost; it has been following you all along."
I was taken aback.
At that moment, I felt a lump in my throat that wouldn’t go down.
"Stop trying to scare me. If it’s been following me, then where is it?"
"I know you don’t believe me. If you don’t trust me, that’s fine; you can just go back right now." Wang Wei’s tone shifted to one of indifference, but then his voice took on an eerie quality as if it were rising from the depths of hell: "If you believe me, then take me out of this hospital right now."
I was puzzled. The hospital was right here; couldn't I just walk out? I spoke my thoughts aloud.
But Wang Wei's next words made me feel as if I had plunged into an ice cellar, every pore in my body beginning to absorb fear.
"Do you think I'm human?"
After Wang Wei said this, I felt as if my scalp was about to explode. Suddenly, even speaking became difficult for me.
My lips trembled, feeling so dry that I suddenly wanted to turn and leave.
The room was empty, and the corridor outside was eerily silent.
"Are you human?" I retorted.
"Go check at the Front Desk if there's anyone by my name."
I began to lose my composure, my mind a tangled mess. If there was no Wang Wei, then who had I been sharing a room with these past two days? It seemed that during my stay, neither the doctors nor the nurses had paid any attention to that bed.
I found it hard to believe. I quickly went to the front desk to inquire about the ward, but the nurse told me there was no one named Wang Wei inside. A chill ran down my spine as I stared blankly at the nurse. When I turned around, my heart felt like it was about to leap into my throat.
Because at that moment, Wang Wei was standing right behind me in a hospital gown.
I stumbled back a few steps and let out a strange cry.
The nurse asked me, "What's wrong?"
I said, "Can't you see?"
Wang Wei forced a smile at me. The hospital lobby was brightly lit, and my shadow stretched long. But when I looked at Wang Wei, I suddenly realized he had no shadow at all.
"Ghost..." I exclaimed in panic.
But the next second, Wang Wei rushed forward and covered my mouth with his hand.
Then I saw him speak to the nurse, "My brother's lost his mind; don't listen to his nonsense."
The nurse looked at Wang Wei and said, "It's fine. You should head back to your room."
I looked at Wang Wei in surprise.
Wang Wei dragged me back to the ward, and I didn't say a word during the entire time.
I finally spoke up, "Damn it, aren't you a ghost?"
"You actually believe that? Your mind can't really be gone, can it?"
I had been quite frightened earlier, and I had already believed about seventy or eighty percent of what I had said to Wang Wei about not being human. Now that he said this, I found myself confused.
Taking a deep breath, I asked, "Are you human or a ghost?" My gaze was intense as I stared at Wang Wei.
At that moment, Wang Wei's face looked very grim.
"I am human," Wang Wei finally said three words.
"Then why do you want me to take you out of the hospital? Can't you leave by yourself?"
Wang Wei suddenly let out a cold laugh and said, "I can't say right now; it wouldn't be good for you."
He was so mysterious, and I was still in a daze. I couldn't understand Wang Wei at all, but instinctively, I felt he was a very dangerous person.
"Then tell me where my Wooden Box is, and I'll take you with me."
Although I didn't know why he insisted on me taking him away, that Wooden Box was truly important to me.
After hearing my words, Wang Wei replied, "I told you, your Wooden Box has always been with you; it's right by your side."
"Speak plainly," I said bluntly.
"The Wooden Box is actually hanging on you right now."
I found it absurd. The Wooden Box was hanging on me? I touched my entire body, but there was clearly nothing there.
Wang Wei watched me as I searched myself and said, "Don't be foolish. Do you think you can feel it?"
I was left speechless, unsure how to respond.
"That Wooden Box is a cursed object; it's currently attached to you."
"Then help me take it off."
"If you take me outside, I'll help you take it off."
I hesitated, thinking about agreeing to take him out, but just then my phone rang, startling me. I pressed the answer button.
"Hello..."
"Don't take him outside. The Wooden Box is safe at your home. Right now, don't say anything—run, and whatever you do, don't look back."
Listening to the woman's voice on the phone, I glanced down at Wang Wei.
Without another word, I turned and ran. I kept running without looking back. After I exited the hospital, I hailed a cab and went straight home.
By the time I got home, it was already eleven-thirty at night. As soon as I entered the house, I started searching for the Wooden Box. Sure enough, it appeared next to my bed.
Something felt off; there had been no Wooden Box before.
How did it reappear? Was this Wooden Box somehow alive and able to move on its own? No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't come up with an answer.
I took out my phone and looked at the number that had called me earlier. I tried to call back, but it informed me that the call could not be connected.
I felt so weak that I collapsed onto the sofa.
My mind was blank; I couldn't remember anything and didn't even know what to think about.
What secrets are hidden in that box? Is it just a wedding dress?
I let out a sigh, feeling wide awake now. Time passed slowly, and soon it was midnight. Perhaps it was because my window was left open, a cold breeze swept in from outside.
I couldn't help but shiver.
After breaking into a cold sweat, I decided to take a shower. Even after washing up, sleep eluded me.
Thinking about Wang Wei's terrifying appearance at that moment made me uneasy. Was he human or ghost? But the nurse had seen him too.
I pulled out a cigarette and lit it, taking a long drag.
After smoking, I lay on my bed and started flipping through a magazine. I usually don't enjoy reading, so whenever I do, I easily get drowsy. Before long, I drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, I got up to go to work. Worried about losing the box at home, I decided to carry it with me.
Throughout the entire day at work, I struggled to muster any energy.
Zhang Fatty sat next to me, chatting away aimlessly.
Looking at Zhang Fatty's chubby face, something suddenly clicked in my mind. I asked, "Fatty, when I was hospitalized the other day, was there anyone else in my ward?"
Zhang Fatty tapped on the keyboard a few times and replied, "I specifically pulled some strings to get you a room that had no one in it."
"But there were two beds in there, right?"
"The other bed is broken and hasn't been repaired, so it counts as a private room. Why are you suddenly asking about this? Is there someone else in the room?"
I shook my head and replied, "No."
"Stop being mysterious. Let's go to the bar tonight."
"Not a chance," I answered immediately.
Fatty fixed his sharp gaze on the Wooden Box beside me and asked, "What did you bring that thing for?"
I didn't respond and deliberately changed the subject. "Have you finished your work?"
"What nonsense are you talking about? We don't have any real work to do; it's just a day full of complaints. What’s that box for? It looks a bit like an antique. My uncle runs an antique shop; do you want to take it for appraisal?"
"No need," I said quickly, fearing Fatty would keep asking. "Tonight at the bar, we won't come back until we're drunk."
But what caught me off guard was that Fatty took out his phone and snapped a picture of my Wooden Box.
