But what I didn't expect was that a strange voice responded to me, saying, "You have arrived."
I looked around, but I couldn't see anyone.
After the voice faded, the fourth floor returned to silence, the flickering lights once again plunging us into a sinister atmosphere.
I called out to Zhang Pangzi, but then I also called out Jianjian.
Lin Ke'er suddenly told me to be quiet. She said, "Listen."
I closed my mouth and began to listen for sounds. Soon, I heard something, but it wasn't the previous strange voice; it was a faint sobbing.
Whenever I hear crying now, I instinctively think it's Jianjian who is crying.
Lin Ke'er and I followed the sound of the crying. However, after just a few steps, I thought I heard that same phrase again: "You have arrived." I nervously looked around, and Lin Ke'er asked what I was looking at.
I said to Lin Ke'er, "Did you hear another voice?"
Lin Ke'er looked at me curiously, shook her head, and said she only heard the crying. We walked a bit further, and soon only the sound of sobbing remained.
Could it be that I just imagined it? I couldn't help but think.
But just then, the noodles in my arms suddenly darted out and began barking at the empty space. I immediately tensed up and shielded Lin Ke'er behind me.
I looked around nervously, but I couldn't see anything, only the fierce barking of the noodles.
I couldn't help but gasp, saying, "Maybe it's a ghost; dogs can see ghosts." After I spoke, Lin Ke'er calmly said, "It's a Wandering Soul."
After Lin Ke'er spoke, I felt shocked and surprised. It wasn't the barking at the Wandering Soul that astonished me, but the fact that Lin Ke'er could also see ghosts.
"You can see ghosts too?" I asked.
Lin Ke'er appeared hesitant to answer, but finally nodded, confirming my question.
I was quite surprised because two people who could see ghosts had suddenly appeared around me—one was Jianjian and the other was Lin Ke'er. Normally, people with such abilities were extremely rare; how could two of them be right beside me?
I glanced at Lin Ke'er in confusion, but she made a silly face at me in this eerie environment, seemingly trying to be cute. I managed to force a smile in response.
The noodles continued to bark.
Lin Ke'er then said, "Don't worry; Wandering Souls won't harm anyone."
I absentmindedly murmured in agreement and continued walking forward. Although I couldn't see where the Wandering Soul was, I deliberately avoided the empty space where the noodles were barking.
The hospital is a place for saving lives, but it is also one of the places where the most people die during peacetime. Therefore, it was normal for Wandering Souls to appear in hospitals at night.
They would wander around the hospital aimlessly all day long. The sound of sobbing continued as we drew closer to the intermittent cries.
Finally, around a corner, I saw a girl crouched against the wall, hugging her knees.
Her head was buried between her legs, and due to the flickering light, I could only make out her silhouette. I called out, "Jianjian," but she didn’t respond.
After calling her name again, I quickened my pace and approached her.
I asked, "Where's Zhang Fatty?"
The only reply was her sobbing. I urged Jianjian to stop crying and bent down slightly to comfort her.
But just as I called out "Jianjian" for the third time, Lin Ke'er shouted at me to retreat quickly, but it was already too late.
In the dim light, I saw a face that looked like it had been cracked and weathered by the sun, but what was different was that it was smeared with blood.
I was instantly terrified; my heart seemed to forget how to beat, and my mind went blank. After hesitating for a few seconds—though it felt like an eternity—her hands tightened around my throat.
Suddenly, breathing became difficult. Blood dripped from that face, and the stench of blood filled my nose and mouth; I nearly gagged.
But even if I wanted to vomit now, I couldn't!
My breathing grew labored; it was clear that I was exhaling more than inhaling.
At that moment, Lin Ke'er stepped forward. Her hands suddenly covered the ghost's eyes, and slowly, the Evil Spirit began to loosen its grip on my neck. I started to breathe again and gulped in air desperately.
The noodles were barking fiercely, and I called out to Lin Ke'er, but she urged me to run first.
I asked her what to do.
She said it was fine and told me to hurry.
But I didn't move; I couldn't leave a woman behind and run away! I said to Lin Ke'er, "You go ahead. I'll distract it."
I saw Lin Ke'er cover the Evil Spirit's eyes and thought I could do the same, allowing her to escape first.
Blood continued to drip from the Evil Spirit's face onto the floor, creating a terrifying and eerie atmosphere that was spreading...
Lin Ke'er said, "Ningzi, it won't work if you cover its eyes. Only those who can see ghosts can make them unable to see people."
Suddenly, I understood what Lin Ke'er meant.
She quickly added, "Don't worry, just run! I'm fine; hurry up, or I won't last much longer."
Listening to Lin Ke'er, I began to move my feet. I held onto the noodles, but after a few steps, I stopped. Suddenly, I remembered that the blood of a black dog could ward off evil spirits.
I simply couldn't abandon a girl and escape on my own, even though I was scared! But weren't people like Jianjian, who could see ghosts, also terrified of them?
So I made a decision. I apologized to the noodles, and surprisingly, it seemed to understand my words and lifted one of its paws on its own.
I used the small knife I carried with me to extract some black dog blood from the noodle's claws. The noodle let out a few painful whimpers. After collecting the blood, I immediately turned and ran back, shouting for Lin Ke'er to get out of the way.
Upon hearing my words, Lin Ke'er released her grip from over the ghost's eyes and quickly stepped back. With the black dog blood still on my hands, I flung it directly onto the Evil Spirit, though some spilled as I ran.
However, the black dog blood landed on the Evil Spirit, and she quickly let out a spine-chilling scream. I rushed forward and smeared some more of it on her.
The noodle followed me, biting at the Evil Spirit.
I tried to pull back, but the noodle wouldn't let go. In the end, I had no choice but to carry the noodle and run. The wails of the Evil Spirit echoed through the corridor as Lin Ke'er and I dashed around a corner.
In a tone of relief, I said, "We finally escaped." But just as I finished speaking, I suddenly heard sobbing sounds, causing my heart to leap into my throat.
Could it be the Evil Spirit again?
I glanced at Lin Ke'er, who looked somewhat pale at that moment.
I still had black dog blood on my hands, and I noticed Lin Ke'er couldn't help but cover her nose. I quickly realized what was happening and wiped off the black dog blood, as the smell was indeed unpleasant.
After cleaning my hands, Lin Ke'er spoke in a slightly reproachful tone, "Why did you run back just now? Have you lost your mind?"
"She's the Evil Spirit; I was worried you couldn't handle her alone..." I replied.
Lin Ke'er seemed ready to say something else, but upon hearing my words, her expression softened.
Lin Ke'er told me, "Next time, just listen to me. You run, and I... no, I can handle her. I'm just afraid you might get hurt."
Her confidence seemed to ease the tense atmosphere, though the sound of sobbing continued, adding a chilling air to the place.
I walked to the corner and peeked into the previous hallway. The bloody Evil Spirit was gone, and I let out a sigh of relief.
I asked Lin Ke'er, "Is this still a hospital?"
She replied with a question, "What do you think?"
I said it wasn't. With so many people in a hospital, there couldn't possibly be this many ghosts around. Isn't it said that ghosts fear crowds? They generally don't dare to go where there are many people. So this place isn't a hospital.
Lin Ke'er hummed in agreement.
"Then what is this place?"
After a moment of silence, she said, "This is likely a quarantine zone, a place where only the dead can stay."
Her words stirred up a storm within me. If that's the case, are Lin Ke'er and I still alive?
