I clearly wanted to say something, but inexplicably, I closed my eyes instead. A sense of panic and fear surged within me, and as my eyes shut, the surroundings returned to darkness.
I had no idea how much time passed when suddenly, I heard Wang Wei's voice beside me.
"Saning, how did you end up here?" Wang Wei asked in a tentative tone.
Yet, I kept my eyes closed.
"Is he gone?" I asked.
Wang Wei knew exactly who I was referring to and replied that he was not there. Then he asked me, "Did you see him? What did he say to you?"
Perhaps it was because Wang Wei had been trapped here for decades that he felt a deep-seated fear of that person, one that seemed to stem from his very soul.
Upon hearing Wang Wei say he was not there, I opened my eyes. However, the moment I did, Wang Wei nearly fell to the ground in fright.
Then he suddenly knelt down and exclaimed, "I didn't know it was you! I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I'll leave right now." With that, Wang Wei crawled away in the opposite direction.
I shouted for him to stop. Suddenly, I realized what Wang Wei was afraid of; instinctively, I covered my eyes with one hand.
Because it seemed like my eyes no longer had eyeballs.
The surroundings were completely empty now, and the lights in the hospital corridor were on. Yet at this moment, I discovered that I had no White Lantern in my hands.
My hands were completely empty. And that person was naturally gone as well, but I couldn't forget that face—a face that could be considered handsome, with the only flaw being the absence of eyeballs.
I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts.
After Wang Wei finished speaking, he indeed stopped in his tracks, crouching down with all fours on the ground, even burying his head.
I asked, "Who were you referring to just now?"
Wang Wei dared not speak; fear gripped him as he said, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have offended you. Please don't kill me."
I paused for a moment and replied, "It's me, Saning!"
Wang Wei was stunned into silence, not daring to respond. For a while, the corridor fell silent again. It felt unfamiliar; I could confidently say I had never walked through it before.
"Are you really Saning?" Wang Wei asked, his voice trembling.
I assured him that of course I was Saning; who else could it be?
Wang Wei seemed skeptical, remaining motionless on the ground. Suddenly, it struck me. I shouted at Wang Wei, "Did you leave Ke'er and the others behind and run away by yourself?"
Wang Wei remained silent, still seemingly terrified.
I covered my eyes with one hand. Even though I no longer had eyeballs, I could still see things.
"Stand up and talk to me. How are they doing now?"
At that moment, I realized he must have mistaken me for someone else—someone who also lacked eyeballs, just like I did at that moment.
After I let out a cold shout, Wang Wei obediently stood up.
I didn't expose myself; seeing how frightened Wang Wei was of him, I seized the opportunity to ask everything I wanted to know.
"Where are they now? Are they okay?"
"They're fine, in another corridor," he replied, then asked, "Are you really Saning?"
Damn it, I had slipped up and said it out loud. I suddenly denied it. However, Wang Wei confidently stated, "You are Saning."
I panicked and loosened my hand that was covering my eyes, insisting that I wasn't.
But when Wang Wei saw my eyes, he clearly became afraid. In that moment, I understood; he was afraid of these eyes. Yet I also knew that my eyes were indeed unsettling because I had seen others with the same gaze.
I suddenly asked Wang Wei, "Are you afraid of these eyes?"
Wang Wei replied, "Didn't he tell you?"
I thought to myself, did he tell me? It seemed like he had said a lot, but the key point was that I hadn't heard a single word; all I could see was his lips moving.
"What did he want to tell me?" I hurriedly asked. I figured this damn Wang Wei must know something.
But Wang Wei suddenly looked at me. Although there was fear in his eyes, he said, "If he didn't tell you, then I don't dare to say either."
"Will you say it or not?" I pressed closer to Wang Wei, deliberately lowering my tone to sound terrifying. However, Wang Wei seemed certain that I wouldn't do anything to him; he stubbornly clenched his teeth and refused to say anything.
I didn't dare to seek out Ke'er and Zhang Pangzi now, because my eyes had changed, taking on a terrifying appearance.
Suddenly, I fell silent. Time passed second by second, and even if I went out, what would I do about these eyes?
Wang Wei seemed to see through my thoughts and said, "Saning, your eyes are invisible to most people." Upon hearing this, I became somewhat excited and asked, "Really? Then how can you see them?"
Wang Wei replied, "Because I'm half a ghost myself, that's why I can see."
"You mean that humans can't see them, but ghosts can?" I felt a wave of melancholy wash over me because my wife happened to be a ghost.
Although I had accepted that she was a ghost, could she accept my strange eyes?
I didn't know, so my mind began to wander.
But then Wang Wei added, "Ghosts also can't see your eyes unless you allow it. No one can see your eyes except for you."
"Is that true?"
"Absolutely," Wang Wei affirmed.
"Then what do I need to do?"
"You just need to let your own blood drop into your eyes."
I looked at Wang Wei with suspicion; his words weren't necessarily trustworthy. My gaze lingered on him, and it was clear that he was frightened.
I said, "If you dare to deceive me, I'll fight you." As soon as I finished speaking, Wang Wei unexpectedly knelt down. I was a bit curious about what those eyes represented that made Wang Wei so afraid.
Seeing Wang Wei kneeling, I didn't let him get up. I bit my fingertip until it bled, then followed the instructions Wang Wei had given me.
A drop of blood burst forth from my fingertip, and I tilted my head back, letting the blood fall into my eyes.
At first, I felt nothing, but soon a pain like a thousand ants gnawing at my heart surged through me. It was a heart-wrenching agony, as if arrows were piercing through me, and every pore was absorbing the pain.
I cried out in pain. Rolling on the ground, I covered my eyes with my hands, doubting whether I had fallen for Wang Wei's trick.
However, after about a minute, the pain suddenly receded like a tide.
I got up from the ground. Wang Wei remained kneeling, his head bowed deeply as if he dared not look up.
After I stood up, I called out to Wang Wei, saying, "Stand up and look at my eyes."
Upon hearing my words, Wang Wei indeed stood up.
"What do my eyes look like now?" My voice had changed; it sounded hoarse all of a sudden.
Wang Wei looked for a moment and said, "They are no different from a normal person's."
"You didn't deceive me?"
"I wouldn't dare."
I looked at Wang Wei and asked, "What is it about those eyes that frightens you so much? What are they for?"
Wang Wei didn't dare to answer. His gaze was evasive.
I continued, "If you don't tell me, don't expect me to take you out of here for the rest of your life."
Upon hearing my words, Wang Wei finally felt a flicker of fear. He had been trapped here for decades, and his greatest wish was to escape and live freely. As long as his body was intact, he could survive outside this hospital.
My presence had given him hope for freedom, which was why he had acted so desperately before.
At that moment, my words carried more weight than any previous threats I had made to him. When Wang Wei heard what I said, he no longer dared to threaten me as he had before.
Instead, he spoke in a pleading tone, "I can't say! If I do, I might be Soul Shattered."
"Fine, if you won't speak, I'll leave," I said, pretending to walk away. Wang Wei panicked and exclaimed, "Don't go! I promise I'll tell you, but I can only share a little bit first."
I nodded in agreement.
Wang Wei seemed torn and conflicted. Although the other part of him was no longer present, he still hesitated to reveal the truth.
"Are you going to tell me or not? If not, I'm leaving."
Wang Wei grew anxious and said, "I will! I will! Your eyes can..."
