Chen San's face was incredibly pale, beads of sweat forming at the tip of his nose. He looked at me with utmost seriousness, and I could tell his breathing was uneven. Perhaps he had pondered for a long time before deciding to ask this question or to reveal this secret to me.
I stared at Chen San; we hadn't known each other for long.
Yet, I had already witnessed Chen San's pale face bloom with blood vessels like intertwining rivers, dense and intricate like a spider's web.
I didn't respond to Chen San immediately.
The cold wind outside blew in, reddening my cheeks, while Chen San remained unfazed.
Suddenly, he coughed a few times.
After a long silence, I said, "I think you are alive." After I spoke those words, Chen San's coughing ceased. His snow-white hair made him appear exceptionally stern.
Suddenly, he chuckled and looked at me, saying, "Do you really think I am alive?"
I nodded in response.
Chen San then inexplicably said to me, "I believe in you." After saying that, he fell silent, but I felt as if his words were unfinished.
I asked, "What do you believe in about me?"
Chen San suddenly leaned closer to me, our noses almost touching. My heart raced, and I felt a wave of tension as our gazes locked.
Taking a deep breath, Chen San said, "I believe you can save me."
"I don't understand what you're saying," I said bluntly.
Chen San slowly stepped back, creating some distance between us. For some reason, I felt a bit nervous facing him. I had just said that Chen San was indeed a living person, but he was definitely not an ordinary one, as his soul was incomplete; he was "Soul Detached."
As the term suggests, "Soul Detached" means that the spirit cannot attach itself to the body.
However, Chen San was different because his soul could attach to his body, but the compatibility was low. To put it simply, his body was not suitable for this soul to inhabit.
Yet the soul forcibly clung to it. What surprised me was that despite this, Chen San was still alive; he had a heartbeat and breathed.
Chen San then said, "You understand; you have those eyes. You will understand."
"You know the secret of my eyes?" My emotions suddenly became unsettled.
Chen San focused and replied, "I have seen it."
After Chen San spoke, we both fell silent for a moment. I hesitated to speak but then he said not to ask about the secret of my eyes because he couldn't reveal it either.
"Can I ask you something else?" I blurted out.
"Go ahead."
"What agreement did you reach with that monk?" As soon as I finished speaking, there was a knock at the door outside. Chen San stood still in his hospital gown.
Chen San truly felt like a mystery I couldn't unravel. I suspected that the Ninth Relic was also related to him, especially considering what Jianjian had said to me, which made me even more suspicious of Chen San.
"Chen San believes that I can save him, but can I really save him? Or rather, what does it mean to save him?"
The knocking at the door continued, and I walked over to open it.
Zhang Dexin entered, followed by Ke'er and the others. I greeted Zhang Dexin, who responded with a nod.
Then, the first thing Zhang Dexin said to Chen San was, "I got the Relic."
Chen San replied, "I hope you won't go back on your word."
Zhang Dexin acknowledged him with a grunt.
Ke'er called out to me, "Husband," and then asked, "What did he say to you?"
I told Ke'er, "Nothing much."
Ke'er seemed like she wanted to say more, but I took her hand and said, "Let's talk about it later."
Ke'er hesitated for a moment before finally agreeing with a soft "mm."
Chen San exchanged a few words with Zhang Dexin, and as they were leaving, he turned to me and said, "Saning, I hope you won't go back on your word either."
I didn't respond because I hadn't promised him anything in the first place.
Holding Ke'er's hand, I left the hospital room. Wang Wei and Jianjian followed me closely behind, with Zhang Pangzi trailing right after. Zhang Pangzi called out to Jianjian, hoping she would stay behind so that his Uncle could help deal with her mother's situation.
Jianjian was reluctant, insisting that she wanted to follow me. She said that only by staying with me would her mother not dare to come. However, I eventually persuaded Jianjian to stay, assuring her that nothing would happen.
If what Ke'er said was true, and Jianjian's mother's soul was being manipulated, then Zhang Dexin's title as Zhang the Fortune Teller must hold some weight.
He should be able to help solve some problems.
In the end, Jianjian relented and called me Saning Brother, saying that if anything happened, I had to call her, and I would definitely come.
I agreed.
At that moment, Ke'er added, "Jianjian, there are some things you have to face on your own."
For some reason, Jianjian always seemed a bit fearful of Ke'er.
Jianjian responded with a soft "mm."
Ke'er tugged at my arm and said, "Come on, Husband, let's go home."
As she pulled me toward the hospital exit, she playfully threatened me, "From now on, you’re not allowed to flirt with Jianjian."
I denied it.
Ke'er pouted and said sweetly, "You can’t say you didn’t; everyone calls you San Ning Brother." With that, she pinched me lightly.
Wang Wei chimed in from behind, saying it was so annoying.
I treated Ke'er's words as mere background noise.
After walking for a while, Ke'er suddenly turned to Wang Wei and said, "Why are you still following us?"
Wang Wei replied with a hint of grievance, "If I don't follow you, where else can I go?"
With a stern expression, Ke'er told Wang Wei, "You come find me tomorrow morning, Husband. I have some private matters to discuss with Husband tonight."
Wang Wei asked, "Then where should I stay?"
Ke'er then turned to me and said, "Husband, you should give him money for a hotel."
I handed Ke'er some money, which she then gave to Wang Wei. As Wang Wei was leaving, he cast a lingering glance at me, filled with unspoken resentment, as if to say I valued romance over friendship.
Once everyone had left, Ke'er's expression suddenly changed.
“Husband, what did Chen San say to you earlier?”
I had no reason to hide anything from Ke'er.
Looking at me intently, Ke'er said, “Husband, that person is not trustworthy. You can't believe everything he says.”
Even without Ke'er's warning, I found Chen San somewhat sinister; I wouldn't take all his words at face value. I asked Ke'er, "Did you sense something?"
She nodded in response.
"That person will not die."
When Ke'er spoke those words, I was stunned. The implication was clear: first, he was indeed a person, and second, he would not die.
But can someone truly be immortal?
Before this moment, I had never believed that a living person could escape death. However, now I found myself reconsidering, especially with the appearance of the Relic. I asked Ke'er, "Did he consume the Relic?"
"He won't die even if he doesn't eat the Relic," Ke'er replied directly.
"Why not?"
"His soul has issues."
I wanted to press further, but Ke'er interrupted my thoughts. "Husband, after not seeing me for an entire night, don't you miss me? Let's go home." As she spoke, her eyes sparkled like a pool of spring water.
It made my heart race.
Suddenly, I remembered that the Relic was still with me. Connecting it to what Wang Wei had said earlier, I turned to Ke'er and said, "Ke'er, I have the Relic now. Does that mean I can bring you back to life?"
This thought became my greatest motivation for wanting to obtain the Relic; I desperately wished for Ke'er to live again, and excitement surged within me.
I gazed at Ke'er with fervent eyes.
She looked back at me, and after a moment's pause, she asked, "Ningzi, do you really wish for me to come back to life?"
I nodded heavily and let out a sound of agreement.
Ke'er suddenly seemed to be moved, her lips curling into the brightest smile, yet her eyes glistened as if holding back tears.
"Yes," Ke'er said.
I wanted to say something more; I wanted to ask if Relic could bring her back to life. But Ke'er didn't give me a chance to speak and kissed me directly.
With other girls taking the initiative, I naturally responded in kind. After a passionate kiss, Ke'er's cheeks turned a bright shade of red, and then she boldly declared, "Let's go home, Husband."
However, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off about Ke'er. My concern was with that faceless Wandering Soul, as her aura felt too similar to Ke'er's.
If she had features like Ke'er, I would undoubtedly mistake her for Ke'er.
On the way, I hailed a taxi and prepared to head back. I let Ke'er enter first, but as I was about to get in, I froze because I saw...
