Chen San's face was incredibly pale, beads of sweat forming at the tip of his nose. He looked at me with utmost seriousness, and I could tell his breathing was uneven. Perhaps he had contemplated for a long time before deciding to ask this question or to reveal this secret to me.
I stared at Chen San. We hadn't known each other for long, but I had already seen his pale face bloom with blood vessels like a tangled web twice, intricate as a spider's silk.
I didn't respond to Chen San immediately.
The cold wind outside blew sharply, reddening my cheeks, while Chen San remained unfazed.
Suddenly, he coughed a few times.
After a long silence, I said, "I think you are alive." Once I spoke those words, Chen San's coughing ceased. His snow-white hair made him appear exceptionally stern.
He suddenly chuckled and then looked at me, saying, "Do you really think I am alive?"
I nodded in response.
Out of nowhere, Chen San said to me, "I believe in you too." After saying that, he fell silent, but I felt as if his words were incomplete.
I asked, "What do you believe in about me?"
Chen San suddenly leaned closer, our noses almost touching. My heart raced, and I felt a wave of nervousness wash over me as our eyes locked.
Chen San took a deep breath and said, "I believe you can save me."
"I don't understand what you're saying," I replied bluntly.
Chen San slowly stepped back, creating some distance between us. For some reason, I felt a bit nervous facing him. I had just said that Chen San was indeed a living person, but he was definitely not an ordinary one, as his soul was incomplete; he was "Soul Detached."
The term "Soul Detached" literally means that the soul cannot attach itself to the body anymore.
However, Chen San was different because his soul could attach to his body, but the compatibility was low. To put it simply, his body was not suitable for this soul to inhabit.
Yet the soul forcibly attached itself anyway. What surprised me was that despite this, Chen San was still alive; he had a heartbeat and breathed.
Chen San then said, "You understand. You have those eyes; you will understand."
"You know the secret of my eyes too?" My emotions suddenly became unsettled.
Chen San focused and said, "I have seen it."
After Chen San spoke, we both fell silent for a moment. I hesitated, preparing to say something, but Chen San interrupted, saying not to ask him about the secret of my eyes because he couldn't reveal it either.
"Can I ask you something else?" I blurted out.
"Go ahead."
"What agreement did you reach with that monk?" As soon as I finished speaking, there was a knock at the door outside. Chen San stood still in his hospital gown.
Chen San was truly like a mystery, one I couldn't see through. I suspected that the Ninth Relic was also related to him. Moreover, Jianjian's words made me doubt Chen San even more.
Chen San said he believed I could save him, but could I really save him? Or rather, what would it mean to save him?
The knocking at the door continued. I walked over and opened it.
Zhang Dexin entered, followed by Ke'er and the others. I greeted Zhang Dexin, who responded with a nod.
Then, the first thing Zhang Dexin said to Chen San was, "I got the Relic."
Chen San replied, "I hope you won't go back on your word."
Zhang Dexin acknowledged him with a sound.
Ke'er called me "Husband" and then asked, "Husband, what did he say to you?"
I told Ke'er, "Nothing much."
Ke'er seemed to want to say more, but I grabbed her hand and said, "Let's talk about it later."
Ke'er hesitated for a moment before finally agreeing with a soft "mm."
Chen San exchanged a few words with Zhang Dexin, and as they were leaving, he turned to me and said, "Saning, I hope you won't go back on your word either."
I didn't respond because I hadn't promised him anything in the first place.
I held Ke'er’s hand as we left the hospital room, with Wang Wei and Jianjian following closely behind. Zhang, the chubby guy, trailed after us as well. He called out to Jianjian, hoping she would stay behind so that his Uncle could help resolve her mother's situation.
At first, Jianjian was reluctant, insisting on coming with me. She said that only by staying with me would her mother dare not approach. However, I eventually persuaded her to stay, assuring her that nothing would go wrong.
If what Ke'er said was true—that Jianjian's mother’s soul was being manipulated—then Zhang Dexin’s title as Zhang the Fortune Teller must hold some weight.
He could definitely help solve some problems.
In the end, Jianjian relented and called me Saning Brother, saying that if anything happened, she would call me and I must come back.
I agreed.
At that moment, Ke'er added, “Jianjian, there are some things you must face on your own.”
For some reason, Jianjian always seemed a bit fearful of Ke'er.
Jianjian nodded in response.
Ke'er tugged at my arm and said, “Let’s go home, Husband.”
As she pulled me toward the exit of the hospital, she playfully threatened me, “From now on, you’re not allowed to flirt with Jianjian.”
I protested that I wasn’t.
Ke'er pouted and said in a teasing tone, “You can’t deny it; everyone calls you San Ning Brother.” With that, she pinched me lightly.
"Wang Wei" complained behind us, "This is so annoying."
"Ke'er" and I ignored him.
After walking for a while, "Ke'er" suddenly turned around and asked "Wang Wei," "Why are you still following us?"
"Wang Wei" replied with a hint of grievance, "If I don't follow you, where else can I go?"
With a stern expression, "Ke'er" said to "Wang Wei," "You come find me tomorrow morning, 'Husband.' I have some private matters to discuss with 'Husband' tonight."
"Wang Wei" asked, "Then where will I stay?"
"Ke'er" turned to me and said, "'Husband,' why don't you give him some money for a hotel?"
I handed "Ke'er" some money, which she then gave to "Wang Wei." As he left, he shot me a resentful glance, as if to say I prioritized romance over friendship.
Once everyone had departed, "Ke'er" suddenly changed her expression.
"'Husband,' what did 'Chen San' say to you earlier?"
I had no reason to hide anything from "Ke'er."
Looking at me seriously, she warned, "'Husband,' that person is not trustworthy. You can't believe everything he says."
"Chen San" does have a bit of a sinister aura. Even without "Keer's" warning, I wouldn't take everything he said at face value. I asked her, "Did you sense something?"
"Ke'er" let out a sound.
Then she said, "This person will not die."
Her words stunned me because when "Ke'er" said, "this person will not die," it first confirmed that he was indeed a person, and second, that he would not die.
But can someone really not die?
Before this, I didn't believe that living beings could escape death, but now I did, because of the appearance of "Relic." I asked "Ke'er," "Could it be that he has consumed the 'Relic'?"
"He won't die even if he doesn't eat the 'Relic,'" "Ke'er" answered me directly.
"Why?"
"His soul has issues."
I wanted to continue asking, but "Ke'er" said to me, "Husband, you haven't seen me all night. Don't you miss me? Let's go home." As she spoke, her eyes seemed to hold a pool of spring water.
It made my heart race.
Suddenly, I remembered that the "Relic" was still with me. Connecting it to what "Wang Wei" had said, I turned to "Ke'er" and said, "Ke'er, I have the 'Relic' now. Does that mean I can bring you back to life?"
This was my greatest motivation for wanting to obtain the "Relic." I hoped for "Ke'er" to live again, and at this moment, I felt a surge of excitement.
I gazed at "Ke'er" with burning eyes.
Ke'er looked at me, and after a moment, she said, "Ningzi, do you really hope I can come back to life?"
I nodded heavily and murmured in agreement.
Suddenly, Ke'er seemed to be moved, a bright smile blossoming on her lips, though her eyes glistened as if holding back tears.
She said, "I will."
I wanted to say something more; I wanted to ask if the Relic could bring her back. But Ke'er didn't give me a chance to speak and kissed me directly.
When other girls take the initiative, I naturally responded in kind. After a passionate kiss, Ke'er's cheeks turned a rosy red, and then she declared boldly, "Let's go home, Husband."
Yet, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off about Ke'er. My concern was for that faceless Wandering Soul, as her aura resembled Ke'er's too closely.
If she had features like Ke'er’s, I would undoubtedly mistake her for Ke'er.
On the way, I hailed a taxi and prepared to head back. I let Ke'er enter first, but as I was about to get in myself, I froze because I saw...
