To be honest, I was startled when I heard that. I quickly looked up and found my colleague standing next to me.
I hurriedly put my phone away.
"What are you going to do?"
"There’s a colleague gathering this weekend, and the Boss is treating. Are you going?"
I was taken aback and quickly composed myself, then made an excuse to decline. My colleague looked at me in surprise before leaving.
I took a deep breath, but soon received a call from an unknown number. I thought it might be that Evil Being, so without hesitation, I pressed the answer button.
To my surprise, it was Chen San calling.
Chen San got straight to the point: "The call was from Zhang Dexin, and you must attend this funeral." His words were brief but stirred up a storm of emotions within me.
"How do you know?" I asked, puzzled.
Chen San replied, "I was invited too." Upon hearing this, a chill ran down my spine.
"You were invited too?" I was quite shocked.
Chen San acknowledged it and said he had some matters to attend to before hanging up. Just as I wanted to ask him who the funeral was for if he was also invited, I hesitated. Did Chen San also know about that Evil Being? The mystery deepened, and my confusion grew along with it: Infatuated Zhang Jie.
Was this funeral for me? This was my greatest concern.
The workday passed in a haze. After work, I habitually walked toward the bus station. In the city's night, many Wandering Spirits had nowhere to go, scattering throughout the city and decorating it with their faint glow—only ordinary people couldn't see them.
But after I took a few steps, I heard someone calling me. I looked over and saw Wang Wei had driven up again. My mind was heavy with thoughts, but I needed to sort out Jianjian's situation first.
After all, this was something that the fat guy had arranged. I had to see it through.
Once I got into the car, I didn’t say a word, while Wang Wei occasionally tried to chat with me.
Wang Wei thought I was worried about what happened earlier in the day. So he said to me, “Saning, don’t worry too much; it’s not as serious as I made it sound.”
“Wang Wei, can you please stop talking?”
My head was a mess at that moment. Wang Wei fell silent and continued driving. When we got home, I told him to wait for me for a moment, and then I went upstairs.
However, when I opened the door, I didn’t see Ke'er. I was a bit surprised because normally, ghosts could come out as soon as night fell. But Ke'er hadn’t appeared tonight. I searched the entire house but found no trace of her.
I decided to put that aside for now and spent a few minutes getting Jianjian into the car, along with Wind Tree and the noodles.
We got into Wang Wei’s car, and he asked where we were going.
I said we were heading to Zhang Dexin’s place.
Wang Wei couldn’t help but remind me, “Be careful of that Old Bastard.”
I couldn’t resist asking, “What grudge do you have against Zhang Dexin?”
Wang Wei didn’t hide anything and said, “He was one of the guys who stole relics back in the day.” Suddenly it clicked; he was an enemy!
I asked Wang Wei if he wasn’t afraid of being recognized when he went there.
Wang Wei replied that he wasn’t worried; if that Old Bastard showed up later, it would definitely surprise him. But I told Wang Wei not to act recklessly and asked him if his rituals were reliable.
Wang Wei said that Zhang Dexin still had some skills, but that was about it.
We drove to Zhang Dexin's house, and Jianjian seemed very frightened, unwilling to get out of the car. I told Jianjian that this matter had to be resolved; otherwise, did she want to be haunted by this nightmare for the rest of her life?
Jianjian timidly glanced at me and called me Saning Brother, saying, "Will you help me?"
I nodded in response.
Then I invited Wang Wei to join us, but the previously boastful Wang Wei suddenly became timid and refused to go. I knew Wang Wei was just a paper tiger; back at the hospital, he was terrified when he heard Zhang Dexin was coming.
Since Wang Wei wouldn't go, I couldn't force him.
Wind Tree called me brother and came over holding a bowl of noodles.
Zhang Dexin had already prepared everything needed for the ritual.
Upon seeing Jianjian, Zhang Dexin asked her to write down her mother's Damn it Four Pillars of Destiny. Jianjian complied and wrote everything as instructed by Zhang Dexin.
As I watched Jianjian write down her mother's Damn it Four Pillars of Destiny, I hoped that tonight would finally put an end to Jianjian's nightmare.
Zhang Dexin then took a drop of blood from Jianjian's fingertip and began performing the ritual like a shaman.
I couldn't understand this kind of ritual, but it required bells, yellow paper, wooden swords, glutinous rice, and other items. At first glance, it seemed ordinary, but soon the wind began to pick up.
The lighting in Zhang Dexin's house was already dim, and now it felt even darker.
Wind Tree seemed a bit scared and came over to hold my hand. I reassured Wind Tree not to be afraid as she blinked at me with the noodles she was holding.
I patted the noodles on its head.
The room was enclosed on all sides, yet the wind still blew. So one should never believe that this world is free of ghosts; it's better to believe there are than to doubt their existence.
After finishing everything, Zhang Dexin smeared a drop of Jianjian's blood onto a piece of yellow paper and then affixed the paper to a straw doll.
The straw doll bore a Four Pillars of Destiny for Mother Jianjian. Then, Zhang Dexin began to mutter something under his breath.
Before long, I saw a Soul approaching us, getting closer and closer... but the malevolent energy surrounding this Soul was overwhelming.
I couldn't help but take a deep breath.
"Saning Brother, my mom is coming..." Jianjian's face turned pale with fear.
Noodles began to bark anxiously, and Wind Tree hid behind me. As soon as Mother Jianjian appeared, she headed straight for Jianjian.
At that moment, I got a clear look at Mother Jianjian. She resembled Jianjian closely, looking quite elegant, yet this very person had accidentally killed her own child due to drug abuse and was then mistakenly killed by her child.
Zhang Dexin immediately stood in front of us.
Earlier, Ke'er had speculated that Jianjian's mother was being controlled by someone, and it seemed that was indeed the case. However, it was strange that if her mother was being manipulated, why would the control be directed at Jianjian and not someone else?
I couldn't help but glance at Jianjian, who was trembling in fear.
A thought suddenly crossed my mind: could it be because of Jianjian's eyes? But didn't her eyes only allow her to see ghosts?
Was there something else Jianjian hadn't told me?
I had to admit that Zhang Dexin had some skills; he quickly subdued Mother Jianjian. I watched as Zhang Dexin placed a piece of yellow paper on Mother Jianjian's forehead, and she let out a piercing scream.
At that moment, Jianjian couldn't help but cry out for her mother.
Zhang Dexin instructed me to hold back Jianjian and prevent her from approaching. He was sweating profusely now, clearly straining under the effort. After more than a minute passed, the Soul gradually softened. I could sense that Zhang Dexin was slowly tearing the yellow paper apart; the spirit seemed confused at first but appeared to regain its senses upon seeing Jianjian.
Zhang Dexin said there were only five minutes left; after five minutes, he would guide her soul to the afterlife.
I let Jianjian go, but she hesitated at first. When she heard her mother call out her name, all the emotions that had accumulated over the past ten years erupted at once.
Jianjian ran towards her mother, but unfortunately, after a decade of grievances, they only had five minutes left to resolve everything.
Wind Tree saw Jianjian reunite with her mother and turned to me, asking, "Brother, where's my mom?"
I tightened my grip on Wind Tree's hand and replied, "Your mom is definitely doing well right now."
"Really?" Wind Tree asked.
I nodded in response.
Suddenly, Wind Tree said to me, "Brother, is my mom dead?" I was taken aback by her question and stared at Wind Tree in surprise, unsure of how to respond.
"Brother, I know my mom is dead. I can feel it. You don't have to worry about me; I know she'll be fine over there." I looked at Wind Tree and then hugged her tightly.
Wind Tree leaned on my shoulder and cried, her tears soaking my shirt and warming my heart.
Just then, my phone rang. I answered it, and to my astonishment, it was Ke'er's voice on the other end. She said, "Husband, please don't attend the funeral in three days..."
