After I answered the phone, I was curious as to why Ke'er was calling me instead of showing up in person. I asked her over the phone, but suddenly there was no response from her side.
Not long after, Jianjian suddenly burst into tears. It had been ten years since we last met, and all the emotional knots from those years were finally untied today.
Jianjian called out for her mother, who also called her name. The two were reluctant to part, but ultimately they were separated by life and death. Moreover, her mother had been in the mortal realm for so long that now, with the dispersal of the yin energy, if she wasn't guided to the afterlife, she could become a Lonely Soul wandering as a ghost.
Zhang Dexin urged Jianjian to leave, but she was unwilling to go. In the end, I stepped forward and pulled her away.
Then Zhang Dexin began the ritual. A few minutes later, Mother Jianjian's spirit was released from its earthly ties and descended to Yama's Hall. The eerie atmosphere here dissipated significantly in an instant.
Tears glistened on Jianjian's face as she called me Saning Brother. I told her not to be sad.
Wind Tree's tears had yet to dry. In a tender voice, Wind Tree comforted Jianjian, saying, "Sister, don't be sad. Our mother will be just fine over there."
Wind Tree then said to me, "Brother, let me down. I want to hug Sister."
I set Wind Tree down. She crawled on the ground, her eyes wide open as if looking at something unseen, letting out a few soft barks.
I scanned the area, searching for Chen San's figure.
The Second Funeral was about to begin soon, and Chen San was among those invited. However, Ke'er had just called to tell me not to attend: Infatuated Zhang Jie.
Could it be that Ke'er was also invited?
This person truly is a piece of work. But thinking about it sent a chill down my spine. I wondered where Ke'er had gone now, and Chen San was nowhere to be seen today either.
Zhang Dexin was packing up when I approached to ask about Chen San's whereabouts.
To my surprise, Zhang Dexin looked at me with a hint of astonishment before saying, "Saning, you should avoid dealing with people like Chen San."
I was momentarily taken aback. I looked at Zhang Dexin in confusion, and he continued, "He's like a venomous snake; it's best to be cautious. Besides, he's not under my supervision, so I don't know where he is."
After saying that, Zhang Dexin went back to his packing.
I stood there for a few seconds, pondering whether Zhang Dexin had suffered some loss at the hands of Chen San.
Wang Wei had mentioned that Zhang Dexin wasn't a good person, while Zhang Dexin claimed that Chen San was no good either. Of course, Wang Wei had also said that Chen San was dangerous. It seemed clear that Chen San was a risky character.
A young man with white hair must have experienced hardships that ordinary people could hardly imagine.
Thinking back to last night when Chen San repeatedly begged me to "save me," it sent chills down my spine. Since Zhang Dexin didn't know where Chen San was, I decided not to press further.
These people loved to keep things vague; if you asked them directly, they would certainly refuse to answer.
I left Zhang Dexin's house with Jianjian and Wind Tree noodles and walked over to Wang Wei's car. I noticed Wang Wei hunched down as if trying to hide from something. When I tapped on the car window, this idiot Wang Wei actually claimed no one was inside.
Damn it, how could he be so afraid of Zhang Dexin after acting so arrogant just moments ago? It was pathetic. I couldn't understand what kind of grudge these two had that made Wang Wei so fearful of Zhang Dexin.
"It's me," I said.
Only after hearing my voice did Wang Wei unlock the door. The three of us got into the car, and Wang Wei quickly drove off.
Inside the car, I asked Wang Wei, "Don't you have any ambition?"
"What's wrong?" Wang Wei asked.
"Aren't you afraid of Zhang Dexin? How come you looked so scared just now?"
Wang Wei awkwardly replied, "I'm just waiting for the right moment. Once it comes, I'll definitely rush in and give that old bastard a good beating."
I wanted to ask more, but Wang Wei changed the subject. "So, how's it going? Has everything been resolved?"
I nodded and said it was mostly settled, but then new issues started arising, which made me a bit anxious.
When I got home, the place was empty. Ke'er hadn't returned and hadn't told me where she went. Suddenly, I had a bad feeling in my gut; I was worried something might have happened to Ke'er, which is why I felt so uneasy.
Wang Wei came over and wandered around for a bit. He mentioned that my living conditions were a bit lacking and suggested I consider moving in with him. I told him to get lost, and he quickly left.
Jianjian and Wind Tree seemed to have calmed down a little.
With no news from Ke'er, I decided to call Chen San. It didn't take long before someone picked up.
It was Chen San. I intended to speak first, but he jumped in and said, "Saning, give me some time. I need a little more time."
His words left me confused. I asked why.
Chen San replied, "We're almost there; just a little more time. Hang on."
After that, he hung up. When I tried calling back, no one answered. Damn it, another weirdo playing games. I thought to myself that one day when I had the strength, I'd tie them all up and give each of them a good beating to see if they'd still keep quiet.
As I pondered this, I stared blankly at my phone screen.
Ke'er was not around, and Chen San asked me to wait for him.
Chen San wanted me to attend the funeral, while Ke'er forbade me from going. Of course, I trusted Ke'er more than I did Chen San.
But right now, Fat Zhang might be in the hands of that Evil Being.
It was truly a complicated situation. If I didn't go, Fat Zhang could be killed; if I went, I might meet my own demise. Choosing between the two was something I had to think carefully about.
I took a deep breath and sat on the sofa. Wind Tree seemed to be saying something to Jianjian.
The Second Funeral was set to begin in three days, and Ke'er had vanished at such a critical moment. I glanced at the Wooden Box. It probably held Keer's greatest secret, but perhaps if I opened it, Ke'er would vanish into thin air. That was my suspicion, or perhaps a premonition. So every time Ke'er urged me to open the box, I refrained.
I knew that box should not be opened; once it was, the consequences would be unimaginable.
Ke'er, where have you gone? Truly, a day apart feels like three autumns!
That night, I couldn't sleep at all; my mind was too cluttered with thoughts.
The person who arranged my funeral had previously told me that I had gained too much and surely wouldn't be pleased, which was why they targeted me. The first Live Burial had failed to bury me.
So what would the Second Funeral entail?
The commotion from the first one had already been so great, and I had only participated because I fell into their trap. This time, the Evil Being was openly inviting me.
However, he still held some leverage over me.
Damn it, this Evil Being is still trying to coerce me; if I don't go, more people will die...
I pondered in my heart, staring at the ceiling all night. When I finally got up the next morning, I felt completely dazed. I rushed off to work, and even after clocking out, I still felt utterly confused.
My job didn't have many advantages, but one thing it did offer was ease. As long as you sat in front of the computer, cranking out a few spreadsheets and tallying some data each day, that was enough. Then, you could wander around the workshop when there was nothing else to do.
When I got home from work, Wang Wei was waiting for me again. I saw him and said, "Haven't you resolved your issues? Why do you keep coming to find me?" I spoke with a hint of annoyance.
Wang Wei chuckled and replied, "Saning, that hurts! Even though I've sorted out my problems, I've come to think of you as a good buddy, a true friend. So how about it? This good buddy is inviting you to dinner. Are you coming?"
I hadn't planned on going, but after being scolded by my boss today, I felt a bit irritable. So I agreed. Wang Wei took me to a rather upscale restaurant.
It was my first time dining in such a place.
We found a table and sat down. The waiter quickly brought us tea. Wang Wei washed my cup first and then poured me a drink while smiling at me ingratiatingly.
Looking at Wang Wei's smile, I thought to myself that his flattery had ulterior motives. The key was that I wasn't in a great mood right now, so I told him directly, "If you have something to say, just say it."
Wang Wei continued to grin and then handed me a cigarette, saying, "Saning, you should quit that unfortunate job of yours."
"Are you going to say it or not? If not, I'm leaving."
"Fine, I'll tell you."
