I had one foot already in the coffin, but this phone call disrupted my rhythm. I pressed the answer button, thinking, could it really be Jianjian calling?
I never expected Jianjian would call me. Once the call connected, I heard Jianjian's voice, and upon hearing it, my scalp tingled.
It really was Jianjian calling. I pulled my foot out of the coffin and turned on my flashlight, looking up. Jianjian's body was still there, but now I suspected it might be a fake.
However, Zhang Pangzi's soul should be real; it hung in the air, its presence already faint.
But if this person could find someone to impersonate Jianjian, their familiarity with souls must be greater than mine. If they had forged Zhang Pangzi's soul, I wouldn't be able to see through it.
The flashlight illuminated the funeral parlor before me, but Chen San was nowhere to be found.
"Hello, Saning Brother," Jianjian's voice came through the phone.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
"I'm fine. I'm with Wind Tree right now. A ghost is chasing us," Jianjian replied.
"You need to go to Zhang Dexin," I said, my tone becoming a bit urgent. But Jianjian said they had already hidden away. I urged them to be careful.
Jianjian responded with a soft "mm" on the phone.
After the call ended, I was certain that body wasn't Jianjian's. But the voice was so similar because she was still calling for help.
"Wu Saning, what are you hesitating for?"
Wang Wei sighed in relief when he saw me step out of the coffin and quickly picked up the White Lantern from the ground and handed it to me. I took the White Lantern; it was already emitting a faint glow.
That red coffin looked exceptionally glaring in my eyes.
I didn't respond to him this time; instead, I wanted to see who was hanging above.
The wails of "Jianjian" echoed intermittently, but now I knew she was a fake, so I didn't pay much attention to it anymore.
However, I still had some doubts about the soul of the fat man.
"Wang Wei" said, "Saning, why don't we leave this place? It gives me an extremely uneasy feeling, just like when I stole the Relic twenty years ago."
I glanced at Wang Wei and lowered my voice. "Even though that person up there isn't Jianjian, that soul might belong to the fat man."
Wang Wei had no fondness for the fat man and replied directly, "He's just a soul now. Even if we bring him back, he might not survive. Saning, I'm feeling particularly uneasy today. Your eyes haven't fully integrated yet; you can't risk yourself right now."
I knew Wang Wei was a chatterbox; he always talked too much.
I said to him, "Damn it, can you be quiet for a moment and think of a way to deal with that Evil Being?"
Wang Wei finally fell silent, looking as if he wanted to say something but held back.
To be honest, I wasn't a hundred percent sure that soul belonged to the fat man, but the aura was very similar.
I stepped back a little from the coffin. I knew this wasn't a "good place," because Ke'er had warned me never to come here. Even if I did come, I should wait for her. Yet in the end, I never waited for her.
As I retreated from the mourning hall, floral wreaths caught my eye. They were adorned with white strips of paper bearing many names, none of which I recognized.
Of course, I hadn't read them all.
As I stepped back, Jianjian above continued to emit her wails. However, I had already tuned it out; in my mind echoed that ethereal lamentation.
The entire warehouse was filled with such sounds. Hearing them in the dead of night was truly unsettling and sent chills racing down my spine.
We exited the mourning hall, and surprisingly, the Evil Being showed no reaction at all; it didn't even speak. Only Jianjian continued to cry out intermittently.
But Zhang Fatty's soul remained completely still.
Despite the numerous flower wreaths, I couldn't see a single person. Could there be surveillance footage? Perhaps they were watching us from some corner.
At that moment, Chen San was nowhere to be found.
Meanwhile, the light from the White Lantern in my hand grew increasingly bright.
Suddenly, I felt a chill run down my spine. I instinctively reached out to touch it and, under the light, I looked up. Damn it, I gasped as I realized it was a human head.
Wang Wei was startled as well.
Both of us shone our flashlights upward and discovered not just one head, but dozens of them densely packed together, all dripping blood as if freshly severed.
I looked at them and couldn't help but feel nauseous; my stomach churned violently.
Damn it, this was truly twisted. Holding a funeral while killing so many people—last time during the Live Burial, he had killed many too, and now he was doing it again. It was utterly chilling.
"Damn it, what do you want?" I shouted.
He chuckled coldly and said, "If you're dead, someone has to accompany you to the grave. Consider this a gift from me." His tone was so casual, as if those dozens of dead people weren't his doing.
"Beast," I cursed at him.
He seemed completely unfazed by my insult and instead laughed maniacally. It felt like I had stepped into a Severed Head area; the blood dripping down was like rain. I quickened my pace to move forward, but I was mistaken—I realized this entire area was filled with human heads.
As Wang Wei and I walked on, we looked up and saw more heads.
Just then, I suddenly felt something poke at my foot. Looking down, I discovered I was standing on a human head. I gasped sharply and couldn't help but scream.
My shoes were covered in blood, which made me extremely uncomfortable.
I thought to myself that as long as I didn't lie in that coffin, the funeral couldn't begin. What could they do about it? With that thought in mind, I circled around to the side of the mourning hall and climbed up a rusty iron protrusion. I wanted to see clearly whether that was really the soul of the Fat Man.
And who was that person impersonating Jianjian?
Once I climbed up, I realized that I could reach Jianjian and the Fat Man's souls just by looking up.
Although I knew this wasn't Jianjian, since I was up here, I might as well try to rescue her. However, when my hand touched the body that called me Saning Brother, she suddenly stopped her wailing.
She called out "Saning Brother" again, and I replied directly, "You're not Jianjian; I know." As soon as I finished speaking, Wang Wei below suddenly shouted my name.
"Saning, be careful!"
My first reaction wasn't to look above but to glance down.
"Above you!"
But by the time I looked back up, it was too late. An exceptionally terrifying face appeared before me, her hands wrapping around my neck.
Her face was covered in countless "pockmarks," resembling a toad. I heard her call out to me in Jianjian's voice, "Saning Brother."
Damn it, I immediately felt like throwing up, but I quickly assessed the situation: she was a person, not a ghost.
"Saning Brother, do you like me?" Her voice had turned seductive. I kicked out at her, but her body was as agile as a snake, easily dodging my attack.
Pouting her lips, she leaned in to kiss me. But upon seeing her face full of pockmarks, I felt an overwhelming urge to die.
I extended a hand to push against her chin, trying to keep her away from me.
"Saning Brother, don't you like me?"
"Damn it, I like ghosts, not you."
As soon as I finished speaking, she suddenly stopped and then burst into tears.
"Saning Brother, I came all the way to attend your funeral, and you don't even like me," she cried in a coy voice.
I couldn't hold back any longer and threw a punch, but she easily dodged it.
I couldn't help but ask, "Damn it, what kind of person are you?"
She said, as if still crying, "I came to your funeral, of course I'm your friend! In our last life, we were lovers, remember? You bad person."
I took a deep breath. I didn't have time to deal with this Ugly Monster, so I said, "Let go of me quickly, or don't blame me for being rude."
"Is that so? Saning Brother, don't bully me."
This was just ridiculous; how did I end up with such a weirdo? Wang Wei was already climbing up.
But at that moment, I wasn't paying attention and ended up getting kissed by her...
