To be honest, I didn't know much about this old man, but instinctively, I felt he wasn't a good person.
I was already preparing to run away when the old man unexpectedly stopped in his tracks. I remained frozen in place.
Wang Wei, unaware of the situation, called out to him as "Sir."
Yet, I felt an overwhelming sense of oppression.
The Temple Guardian halted his steps. He had asked me a question earlier that I hadn't answered. Now, he answered it for me: "Saning, did you just see a coffin and a corpse?"
I was taken aback by how bluntly he put it.
Since he was so straightforward, I nodded in acknowledgment.
The old man asked me, "If I told you what you saw was fake, would you believe me?" After he spoke, I found myself momentarily paralyzed, unsure of how to respond.
Fake? I questioned myself internally, but I had clearly seen that coffin just moments ago.
"It seems you don't believe me?"
Damn it, how could I say whether I believed him or not? It wasn't impossible for it to be fake; after all, the coffin had vanished too quickly. I had only been outside for a few minutes when it disappeared.
Even if the old man had great strength, he couldn't have made the coffin disappear like that! Of course, it was also possible that the Temple Guardian had some hidden mechanisms in this small room.
I asked him what would happen if I didn't believe him.
The old man took a step closer and said, "Saning. You will believe it." His words carried a hint of charm.
"Wang Wei asked, 'Sir, the theater troupe outside sings quite well. Did you invite them?' Wang Wei's question was direct.
The Temple Guardian paused for a moment before shaking his head, denying that he had invited them.
I interjected, "But someone saw you talking to the people from the theater troupe."
The Temple Guardian replied, "Saning, you must understand that sometimes what you see isn't necessarily true. Besides, can you even see anything right now?"
"Saning, whether you can see or not has nothing to do with you!" Wang Wei quickly said, fearing that the Temple Guardian would find out about my eyesight issues.
However, the old man seemed unfazed by Wang Wei's words and turned to me, saying, "Saning, you understand what I mean. You should leave now; I need to sleep."
The old man was already dismissing me. As I was leaving, my curiosity got the better of me, and I glanced around a few more times. The room had only simple furnishings and no sign of a coffin, nor was there even a hint of a foul smell.
Just as I was about to exit, I asked, "Sir, did my parents really not come to the temple to pray last night?"
The Temple Guardian replied, "You should ask your parents about that; I don't know."
Wang Wei and I stepped outside and stood in the temple for a few seconds before heading out. Just as we crossed the threshold of the temple door, we were blocked by Little Year.
He jumped out from somewhere and called out, "Saning Brother!"
I was still trying to shake off the encounter with the old man when Little Year startled me with his sudden appearance. However, I managed to suppress my excitement.
"Saning Brother," Little Year said, spreading out his hand, "give me some money?"
"Why should I, you little brat?" Wang Wei replied.
Little Year smiled at me and said, "Saning Brother, that old man in the temple is not human!"
Damn! This kid's tricks to scam money are endless! First, he said my parents came to the temple to pray for blessings and scammed me out of ten bucks. Then he claimed the old man was connected to the Theater Troupe and got another ten from me. Now he's saying the temple old man isn't human.
This kid is going to be something in the future.
I turned to glance at the temple and urged Little Year to go play by himself, but he stubbornly insisted that what he said was true.
With no other choice, I finally gave him ten bucks.
Ke'er asked me if I had discovered anything.
But that old man must be hiding something strange at home, and then there's the Theater Troupe. Everyone seemed so engrossed, but I couldn't figure out what was wrong with the Theater Troupe.
Although Jianjian mentioned that these living people were attached to White Dots, I couldn't just say it outright. While some rural folks are superstitious, most have moved past that. If you tell them they have something dirty on them, they'll definitely be unhappy.
Moreover, they were so obsessed with the performance; if you dared to disrupt the show, you'd surely get beaten up by the crowd.
After thinking it over, we decided to head back from the temple. As we walked along the road, I couldn't help but sigh; my eyes felt useless.
Noticing my mood, Ke'er asked me, "Husband, what's wrong?"
I looked at Ke'er without saying a word, holding her hand as we headed home.
Once we got back, I noticed my parents weren't home yet, so I called them, but no one answered.
The phone was in a state of no response.
Where could they be? It was my fault for not asking clearly at the time.
With my parents absent, I had to tidy up a bit and prepare dinner for them, but Ke'er insisted on taking care of it. She told me to go rest.
After everything that had happened, I naturally didn't feel much interest in anything.
When I entered the living room, I asked Jianjian what made her come looking for me. Jianjian hesitated for a moment before saying that it was Zhang the Fatty who sent her to find me.
Jianjian still didn't know about Zhang the Fatty's situation.
I fell silent after hearing Jianjian's words. I was still wearing sunglasses, and in my current state, it was clear that I was somehow connected to Zhang the Fatty.
However, I didn't mention to anyone that this was Zhang the Fatty's doing.
At that moment, hearing Jianjian say Zhang the Fatty's name again made me feel a bit uncomfortable inside, but I didn't show it. I asked Jianjian if Zhang the Fatty had said anything else.
Jianjian replied, "Zhang the Fatty told us all to be careful."
I couldn't help but wonder whether Zhang the Fatty had come to find Jianjian in person or if he had called her. But by the time Jianjian spoke her next sentence, I could pretty much confirm my suspicions.
It was Zhang Fatty who called to ask about Jianjian, because Jianjian's next words were, "Saning Brother, where has Zhang Fatty gone?" There was a hint of concern in Jianjian's tone.
To be honest, Zhang Fatty had already done enough for Jianjian, something she should have been able to see and feel.
At that moment, hearing Jianjian inquire about Zhang Fatty's whereabouts made me realize that she cared about him. Last time in the factory warehouse, Zhang Fatty had said that Jianjian didn't love him.
I thought to myself that even if Jianjian loved him, it was misplaced; she must have been blind.
When Jianjian asked about Zhang Fatty's whereabouts, she hesitated for a few seconds but still decided not to tell the truth, awkwardly finding an excuse to brush it off. Although I still couldn't let go of what Zhang Fatty had done to me, if one day he could turn back, I would still hope for him and Jianjian to be well together.
Ke'er quickly finished cooking, and we gathered around to eat a meal together.
However, my parents' absence made me feel uneasy. After making a few more calls with no answer, we finished our meal.
By midnight, my parents still hadn't returned, and my curiosity grew stronger.
I was afraid that Third Uncle would show up and do something to my parents. Later that night, as Ke'er and I lay in bed, she took off my sunglasses and looked into my eyes.
I hurriedly put the sunglasses back on. Ke'er called me "Husband" and asked, "Husband, does your eye still hurt?"
"It doesn't hurt anymore."
"It must still hurt. Husband, are you just comforting me?" Ke'er said, her expression turning a bit sad again.
To be honest, I wasn't comforting her; it didn't hurt at all. In fact, it felt a little itchy now—just a slight itch. I thought it might be the wound healing.
When the time comes for healing, there might be scars left behind. Just thinking about it makes my heart ache a little; my appearance might be ruined, and I may never be as handsome as Wang Wei again!
I sighed.
Ke'er nestled against my chest and softly called out to me, "Husband."
I held Ke'er close, noticing the worried expression on her face. I said, "Ke'er, I'm fine. Look, I can still see, can't I?"
Ke'er lifted her head to look at me, shifting her body slightly closer. Then, like a dragonfly touching the water, she kissed my forehead.
I felt playful.
Just as I was about to "retaliate" with a kiss of my own, I noticed that Ke'er's eyes were turning red.
I tucked her hair behind her ear and said, "Ke'er, as long as I can see, that's all that matters. Unless you find me unworthy."
She quickly replied, "Husband, I would never think that! You mustn't say such things about yourself."
I was just about to say I was joking.
But at that moment, there was a knock at the door.
