I could hear a faint sound of crying outside, and Jianjian called out to me, "Saning Brother." My heart raced at the sound, and I hurried outside.
When I stepped out, I saw Jianjian and Ke'er standing to one side of the crowd.
The low, scattered cries were coming from the people who had gathered from all directions.
I walked over to Jianjian and asked her what had happened.
"Saning Brother," Jianjian said, "these people suddenly started crying. It's a bit frightening." At that moment, Ke'er seemed uneasy, her gaze fixed on me.
I called out to Ke'er, asking, "Ke'er, are you okay?"
Ke'er shook her head and said she was fine.
Wang Wei reminded me, "Saning, that old man hasn't shown up. This might be a trick."
The cries continued to echo through the crowd, and I stared into space. Could this be a mourning? The old man's absence certainly made me uneasy.
I asked Chen San if he had noticed anything.
Chen San shook his head and replied that he hadn't.
Finally, Ke'er spoke up, "Husband, let's leave this place! I have a feeling something bad is going to happen."
But at this point, I was unwilling to leave easily.
No matter the outcome, I had to see it through. I comforted Ke'er, telling her to wait a little longer. Although Ke'er was somewhat reluctant, she had no choice but to agree after hearing my words. Infatuated Zhang Jie.
Revival? Is this really a revival activity? I couldn't help but murmur, as I couldn't see any signs of it at all.
Chen San called out to Xiaoru. Xiaoru glanced at Chen San but remained silent; she seemed still angry about their earlier disagreement.
As the cries of the crowd rose, the sound of the performance began again.
I started to feel a bit anxious.
Because Jianjian mentioned that the white dots were increasing, yet the souls of the living had not left their bodies. I wanted to do something but found myself unable to act.
Damn it, just at that moment, Chen San told me that if we wanted the Revival Pearl, even if we succeeded in seizing life, we would need to find a suitable body within the right timeframe.
Where could we find a body now?
The wind howled, bringing with it a chill.
At that moment, Xiaoru suddenly said beside Chen San, "This is a vigil."
I thought to myself, vigil for what? The person has been dead for so long. A vigil would be more appropriate than this mourning.
But Chen San responded, "Could it be that the soul has appeared?"
Xiaoru shook her head, saying she hadn't seen anything, but it might have appeared.
I glanced around as well, but I didn't see any spirits. The one with the same blank expression as mine had not shown up either.
It was eleven o'clock; this matter could be confirmed as unrelated to the Evil Being.
Chen San said, "Xiaoru, if a sign of life appears later, could you let me know?"
Xiaoru shot a cold glance at Chen San. "What a pipe dream; this place is clearly lifeless." Chen San seemed to have an unusual trust in this girl named Xiaoru.
Time passed second by second, and suddenly I saw a shadow emerge from the temple. I hurried over and focused my gaze, realizing it was the Temple Guardian.
I anxiously asked, "Why did it take you so long to appear?"
The old guardian said nothing, merely glanced at me as if to say, "When did I need to explain myself to you?"
The wind howled, and my heart was in my throat.
I asked, "Is the person buried underground going to come back to life tonight?"
The old man squinted his eyes and replied, "The everlasting lamp hasn't appeared yet; just wait a bit longer."
"Wait? Are you hoping for him to be resurrected?" I couldn't help but question the old man. However, when Chen San stepped forward and saw the Temple Guardian, his expression immediately changed.
I noticed that the old man's face seemed to change as well.
But neither of them spoke.
Wang Wei grew anxious and, without any reservations, directly asked the Temple Guardian, "Old man, what exactly are you up to?"
The Temple Guardian replied frankly, "I can't create this spectacle, and I certainly can't afford the Theater Troupe."
The ethereal sound of singing floated in the air.
However, suddenly, the singing came to an abrupt halt, followed by a female voice calling out in a theatrical tone, "Raise the coffin..."
As those words fell, all the weeping ceased instantly, and their gazes turned toward a single direction.
The coffin was being raised.
I followed their gaze but saw no coffin.
Earlier during the day, the Temple Guardian had mentioned that tonight might reveal the secrets of my eyes and what they hold.
Although I didn't fully understand that statement, I suspected it had something to do with him.
"Saning, bring out the everlasting lamp!" the Temple Guardian suddenly said to me.
I looked at him in surprise and asked, "What everlasting lamp?" But then I realized that it likely referred to my White Lantern.
It seemed the Temple Guardian could see through my thoughts as he said, "You know what I'm talking about?"
"Damn it," I thought, what does it matter if I know? This isn't about Rebirth Ke'er; why should I care about someone else's resurrection?
Wang Wei had told me not to bring it up.
I thought to myself, even if I wanted to, I didn't have it with me! The White Lantern was left at my house.
I was at odds with the Temple Guardian; why should I bring out the White Lantern? The scent of incense grew stronger, and their gazes were fixed in one direction, as if they were waiting for something.
Seeing that I refused to take out the White Lantern, the Temple Guardian said, "Wu Saning, do you still want your eyesight restored?"
I hadn't expected the old man to say such a thing. What did my eyesight have to do with this resurrection event? I stared at the Temple Guardian and suddenly said, "I don't want my eyesight restored; I want her to come back." My words rang out with conviction.
The Temple Guardian glanced at Ke'er and asked, "Her?"
I nodded.
But the Temple Guardian replied, "No matter who is resurrected, she cannot come back. At least this resurrection has nothing to do with her."
I wanted Chen San to say something, but he had fallen silent as if he had suddenly become mute.
I looked at Chen San and said, "Didn't you say there was a way to Rebirth Ke'er? Why are you quiet now?" Damn it, you lied to me, Chen San; your words don't count.
I became somewhat obsessive. My fixation on Rebirth Ke'er was so intense that upon learning she couldn't be resurrected, I grew increasingly radical.
Chen San remained silent, his face pale and somewhat terrifying.
Jianjian called out to me, "Saning Brother," urging me not to be anxious and assuring me that there would be a solution.
At that moment, I looked at Ke'er, who shook her head at me.
I asked, "Why? Is there something wrong with the Revival Pearl?"
The others remained silent, and only Ke'er spoke up, "Husband, you are not at fault. You want to help me be reborn, and I am very grateful for that, but I cannot live right now."
I stared at Ke'er, asking why.
But just then, I seemed to see a faceless soul separating from her body; she shook her head at me as well.
Suddenly, I felt a wave of despair wash over me.
Chen San said, "Saning, this Revival Ritual does not belong to your wife. I cannot help you."
Damn it. When Chen San said that, I understood; it seemed my call for help had been in vain. I thought to myself, why should anyone else help you?
The sound of the coffin being opened lingered in the air...
My heart was restless, preventing me from seeing more.
Wang Wei said, "Saning, since that's the case, let's go. We shouldn't get involved in this matter."
Jianjian also said, "Saning Brother, let's leave."
I might have looked quite unwell at that moment. I took off my sunglasses; living in a way that hides everything was truly exhausting. A cool breeze swept in, filling the dark void where my eyes used to be.
Xiaoru looked at my eyes and was clearly taken aback.
Jianjian was also surprised, her voice trembling slightly as she said, "Saning Brother, your eyes..."
I glanced at Jianjian and replied, "They're gone... everything is gone..."
Ke'er walked over and supported me. I sighed and said to her, "Husband is useless; he still can't help you."
I had initially been full of confidence, thinking there was hope for success, but even Chen San, whom I called over, ended up like this.
Ke'er’s eyes turned red as she said, "Husband, it's okay. You treat Ke'er well; Ke'er knows."
"Saning, let's go. This old man isn't anything good." But Wang Wei's words fell flat.
The Temple Guardian, however, said, "We cannot leave."
