I listened intently, but Xiaoru spoke up, "It's coming from inside." After her words, I dashed down the corridor.
I didn't have time to light the candles one by one. I pulled out my phone and turned on the flashlight feature, the beam flickering in my hand.
I was desperate to know the outcome.
I wanted to find out if Third Uncle was still alive. And how exactly did the Temple Guardian die?
My breath quickened as I heard the footsteps of Wang Wei and the others behind me, but I ignored them. The urgent sounds I had heard earlier seemed like something being chopped.
It was likely the sound of a body being hacked apart.
Damn it, I wondered which pervert was responsible. I kept running, but after about ten minutes, I felt drenched; it was too oppressive here.
When I reached this point, I stopped in my tracks, breathing heavily. I glanced ahead—damn it. There was no way forward; only a wall remained.
A dead end?
Where had that urgent sound come from? Was it just an illusion? Confused, I approached the last wall.
Could there be a mystery behind this wall as well? I walked over and knocked on it. However, this wall seemed solid; nothing was hidden behind it.
But that couldn't be right! I had clearly heard those urgent sounds; Xiaoru had heard them too.
There shouldn't be any mistake! I desperately wished for some clarity.
Though I thought this, there was nothing here at the moment.
I gasped for breath, my gaze vacant.
"Wang Wei" asked, "Could it be an auditory hallucination?"
"Xiaoru" confidently replied, "It definitely isn't a hallucination; I heard it clearly."
At that moment, "Chen San" reminded us, "Look, there are bloodstains on the ground."
We looked down, but this was already a dead end. Even if there was a path, we hadn't found it yet! The sound we heard couldn't possibly have been made by a ghost, right?
Even if it were a ghost, I could see it!
So, damn it, humans are scarier than ghosts!
"Wang Wei" suddenly said, "What if the mechanism isn't behind this wall but on the side?" It seemed to respond to "Wang Wei's" words.
Suddenly, a voice echoed here.
"Behind." "Chen San" shouted. Then he immediately chased after it. At that moment, I caught a whiff of fresh blood and reacted quickly.
Blood was dripping down continuously.
I also saw his silhouette. However, he was carrying a corpse on his back, making it difficult for me to see his entire figure.
Damn it, I couldn't help but curse.
"Chen San" was fast. He had already created some distance between us, but he was still somewhat far from that person.
I panicked and shouted, "Third Uncle."
As soon as I spoke, the figure ahead indeed froze. Seeing him halt confirmed my suspicion—damn it, it really was "Third Uncle."
Third Uncle is really not dead!
I took a deep breath and quickly chased after him.
Damn Third Uncle, I couldn't help but curse. If it really is Third Uncle, I wouldn't care whether he was alive or not; he has caused so many deaths, and whoever he is, he's no good.
But the person ahead was moving quickly.
Chen San darted forward and kicked out, landing a blow right on the back of that person's corpse. The figure stumbled a few steps forward but did not stop.
The corridor wasn't long, just about a hundred meters or so.
Before long, that person dashed out, and shortly after, a scream came from Jianjian.
I urged Chen San to hurry outside; I was also worried about Jianjian. Chen San was the first to chase out, and I followed as the third. Once outside, the sunlight was somewhat blinding.
Jianjian had retreated to a corner, with only a corpse in front of her!
Chen San was already squatting in front of the body, motionless.
I glanced outside; that person had long vanished from sight, and I didn't pursue further. When Wang Wei came out, he was making a fuss, asking where that guy had run off to.
Wang Wei said if it weren't for that kid running fast, he would have made him suffer today.
After Wang Wei finished speaking, I pointed him in a direction and told him to continue the chase. Wang Wei ran to the door and then came back saying, "He got away; lucky him."
The corpse abandoned in front of Jianjian was completely naked, covered in red bloodstains.
Chen San remarked, "He was dismembered."
The taste of blood filled the air.
I ignored the corpse and directly asked Jianjian if she had seen what the person looked like. Jianjian's emotions had stabilized a lot by now, and she shook her head, saying, "I didn't see him, but he carried that person inside away."
After Jianjian spoke, I turned and ran to the Temple Guardian's house, but it was already empty. The Temple Guardian's body was nowhere to be found.
Damn it, why did this person take the Temple Guardian's body?
And is he really Third Uncle? My heart suddenly felt uncertain.
Now I didn't even know what to do.
Xiaoru, unlike Jianjian, squatted down to examine the corpse and said, "It seems like the person is still alive, but there shouldn't be much difference from a dead one."
However, the only thing I could be sure of right now was that the person was alive.
Was this knife technique really Third Uncle's? And is Third Uncle dead or not?
He was clearly conducting an experiment, trying to separate a person from their soul, or perhaps half a body and half a soul. What on earth was he trying to achieve?
Is Third Uncle really Third Uncle? And was that person just now Third Uncle?
The agile movements of that person contrasted sharply with Third Uncle, who was already getting old. Could he really be that nimble? I wondered in my heart.
Third Uncle must have some connection to the Temple Guardian.
Damn it, who exactly is this Temple Guardian? Is he someone behind my white eyes? I felt as if a hole had opened up beside me.
Because there was not a single piece of relevant information in my mind.
"Damn it!" I couldn't help but curse.
"Wang Wei, give me a cigarette." Wang Wei walked over and handed me one. I lit it and took a puff.
Chen San was still staring at the corpse, saying, "This knife technique is truly remarkable!"
"Of course it's remarkable! Have you ever seen someone who can separate the body from the soul with a knife?" I replied.
Chen San nodded. It was indeed the first time he had encountered such a person.
The five of us stayed in the temple for a while.
I had calmed down a bit by now and walked to the back room of the temple, locking the door behind me. A place that harbored so many corpses could be considered a "mass grave." The resentment here was heavy and not suitable for daylight.
I asked Chen San, "Is there any way to suppress this place?"
Just then, Xiaoru approached me suddenly and grabbed my hand. I didn't react in time before I saw a flash of cold light, and blood appeared on my thumb.
Then Xiaoru pressed her finger against it and wrote the character "Shè" on the wall.
A large character for "Shè."
I watched in shock as she used my blood; I was dumbfounded.
By the time I regained my senses, Xiaoru had already stepped aside. Inside, I felt like a thousand wild horses were galloping through my mind. I wanted to say, "Hey, little girl, you just used my blood!"
Just as I was about to say something, Jianjian came over and pulled out a piece of cloth from somewhere to wrap up my thumb.
I glanced at Chen San, who had shifted his gaze elsewhere.
I thought to myself, Chen San deserves to be bullied for encountering a woman like that.
Thinking about it, I was better off as Ke'er.
I took the cloth strip from Jianjian's hands and wrapped my thumb with it. Looking at the character "Shè" written on it, I stared for a while but still couldn't understand its meaning.
What exactly is this woman named Xiaoru?
There was also a corpse outside; I had no idea who it belonged to, but out of humanitarian concern, we dug a hole to bury him.
I separated his soul and temporarily stored it, planning to release it later tonight.
After taking care of all this, we prepared to leave.
As I took one last look at the temple, my feelings were complicated; it was here that my eyes were reborn.
Yet, another mystery lingered here. I couldn't figure out who the Temple Guardian really was. But no matter how much I pondered, I couldn't find an answer, and no one could tell me.
Wang Wei said, "Saning, there's something suspicious about this. I suspect that the Temple Guardian isn't dead." His words shocked me a bit. I wondered if he was just talking nonsense.
I replied, "Wang Wei, if only someone knew the background of that old man."
Damn it, I suddenly remembered something. I wanted to ask Wang Wei what exactly was behind those eyes—besides Wang Wei himself, was there anything else?
But before I could voice my question, Chen San spoke up: "I know the background of the Temple Guardian..."
