As I finished speaking, he fell silent, as if he had descended into a stillness. I couldn't see him, and I wondered if he was like the Evil Being.
Existing yet transparent.
I gazed into the void, staring at the emptiness within it, and suddenly I couldn't help but sigh. My soul seemed to fall into my eyes, and the vibrant colors dancing in the air vanished.
The whimpering sounds faded away as well.
Chen San and the monk were still fighting for their lives, but it no longer concerned me.
I could only assist Chen San up to this point.
Before I left, I told Chen San to rely on himself. He responded with a sound of acknowledgment, and then I departed from the tomb.
Sometimes, one's fate can only be grasped in one's own hands; others can help you, but they cannot support you for a lifetime.
I walked toward the exit, ignoring the screams of Chen San and the Dead Monk echoing behind me.
When I emerged from the dilapidated temple, everyone gathered around me.
Ke'er stepped forward and called out, "Husband, are you alright? Why does your face look so terrible?"
I replied that I was fine.
Wang Wei burst into laughter and said, "Saning, I knew you would be okay."
"Where is Chen San?" Xiaoru asked as she stepped forward.
I replied, "I've done my best; now it’s up to him."
"You really have tried your hardest," Xiaoru said.
"All we can do is our part and leave the rest to fate," I responded. Just then, Xiaoru continued to press for answers, but Ke'er, with a stern expression, interjected, "My husband has already said it; just wait."
Xiaoru's expression wavered, but in the end, she remained silent.
We waited there, perhaps because I had come out safely. Wang Wei, Ke'er, Clay Bodhisattva, and Wind Tree seemed relatively relaxed, having nothing left to worry about.
Only Xiaoru was anxiously gazing towards the dilapidated temple. Several times she attempted to go inside, but I stopped her each time. I told her that even if she went in, it would be of no use; Chen San had to rely on himself at this point.
Xiaoru began to doubt my words. It wasn't until I said that if she could help Chen San, then why hadn’t he called her in that she fell silent. In the end, she chose to wait outside.
Time passed slowly. At that moment, I noticed the Wandering Spirits outside the temple beginning to surge towards me. I opened my eyes and allowed these Wandering Spirits to enter my sight.
After a few minutes, the dryness in my eyes began to dissipate significantly.
Above us hung a bright moon, casting a hazy light that enveloped the dilapidated temple and its surroundings in an eerie depth.
Waiting was the longest ordeal.
I lit a cigarette for myself, but Ke'er scolded me, not allowing me to smoke.
Wang Wei leaned against his car, quiet at that moment, lost in thought. To be honest, Wang Wei had a bit of a history with this dilapidated temple.
It was here that Wang Wei had met his demise, and because of that, he had spent twenty years of his youth in vain. In a way, he had been dead for twenty years.
Twenty years later, Wang Wei was alive again.
Wang Wei had enemies; I suspected Zhang Dexin was one of them. Wang Wei had always been too afraid to face Zhang Dexin but often cursed him. From this, I could conclude that Zhang Dexin must be an enemy of Wang Wei.
However, Wang Wei likely had more than just one enemy.
I stared into the broken temple, resisting the urge to smoke. My throat felt sore, but with Ke'er watching over me, I could only endure for now.
I pulled out my phone to check the time; it was nearly midnight. Three hours had already passed. Strangely enough, the person who should have been the most excited was not showing any signs of it.
Xiaoru's gaze remained fixed on the temple, like a stone waiting for her husband to return.
Around twelve-thirty, Chen San emerged. I took a glance and confirmed that Chen San was indeed alive; he was no longer in that "Soul Detached" state.
His soul had fully merged with his body.
I picked up Wind Tree and called out to Ke'er, Wang Wei, and Clay Bodhisattva as I prepared to get into the car and leave.
Just as I was about to get in, Chen San called out to me, "Saning," thanking me. I replied, "What are you thanking me for? A little something tangible would be nice."
I exchanged a smile with Chen San.
However, there was something terrifying about Chen San; his face was smeared with blood, leaving only his pair of black eyes blinking at me.
I said, "I'm leaving."
Chen San responded with a grunt. The car began to move.
As we drove away from the ruined temple and from Chen San, I sat in the car, suddenly gripped by an ominous premonition.
Wang Wei spoke up, "Does this mean Chen San is back to life?"
I replied, "I suppose so."
Wang Wei continued, "Saning, I can't shake the feeling that Chen San isn't a good person. This guy might do some terrible things in the future."
Ke'er also warned me, saying, "Husband, now that Chen San is alive again, it means he's not dead anymore."
If Chen San is not dead, then I might be the one in danger.
I didn't respond, instinctively pulling a cigarette from my pocket. Just as I was about to light it, Ke'er stopped me.
My throat felt increasingly itchy. Eventually, I rolled down the window, and a cold breeze rushed in, instantly refreshing me.
My heart felt heavy.
The moment I parted ways with Chen San, I caught a glimpse of his eyes. There was something hidden in them, or perhaps he was trying to convey some message to me.
"Be careful of Chen San in the future, Husband," Ke'er said.
I nodded and replied, "Maybe we won't have the chance to interact again." After this separation from Chen San, there seemed to be no reason for us to meet again.
I had helped him once, and he had helped me too.
But now both matters were settled, and we had tied up our loose ends. The car quickly drove to Wang Wei's house. As soon as we entered, I noticed Clay Bodhisattva playing computer games with Wind Tree.
Clay Bodhisattva seemed to have been in that role for so long that he was interested in everything new. When Wind Tree saw me, she ran over.
She called out to me sweetly as "Brother," clearly delighted.
I picked up Wind Tree while Ke'er stood beside me.
Wind Tree then called out to Ke'er as "Sister." But just then, Clay Bodhisattva erupted in anger.
"Damn it, with a teammate as useless as this, how can you even play the game?"
"Damn it, damn it, damn it! I’ll say it three times."
Wang Wei chimed in, "Sister, you’re the one who has given away the most kills!"
"Why don't you teach me how to play?"
"Sure, sure, sure!" Wang Wei was thrilled, thinking he could finally show off in front of Clay Bodhisattva. He had just settled onto the chair when Clay Bodhisattva kicked him off.
"Shut up! I'm here to play games, not to listen to you chatter."
Wang Wei wore a bitter expression as he looked at the two lively characters. I couldn't help but chuckle. It wasn't until late at night, while I was chatting with Ke'er, that Wang Wei approached me and said, "Saning, I need to talk to you."
I asked what it was about and told him to just say it; Ke'er wasn't an outsider.
Wang Wei glanced at Ke'er, who shot him a glare. His voice immediately softened a bit as he said, "Now is a good time for business. I want to invite you to come to the company for a shift."
I looked at Wang Wei.
He added, "If you don't want to, forget it. Just pretend I never said anything, Saning." With that, he turned to leave, but I called him back.
I told Wang Wei to wait for me a moment; I would go with him. After all, Wang Wei was my boss—the one who paid my salary. I couldn't just take his money without doing any work.
Wang Wei wasn't involved in anything morally reprehensible; in a way, he was accumulating good karma.
There were too many Wandering Spirits in this world. If someone was willing to help them find peace, it would surely be a good thing.
Ke'er initially wanted to come along too, but I told her to rest well. After all, her soul was currently unstable and might be decaying; I didn't want her to overexert herself.
Additionally, I wanted to meet with One by One again to discuss matters regarding Underworld Road.
At that time, after crossing the River of Yellow Springs, I would bring that person back and uncover the secrets I wanted to know. Our deal would be complete.
Sitting in Wang Wei's car, he suddenly asked me, "Saning, why don't you learn to drive someday?"
I replied, "Why learn to drive?"
Wang Wei said, "Saning, you are now the Chief Soul Reaper of my company. Without a car, you lack status."
Just as I was about to respond to Wang Wei, he glanced at me for a brief moment. But in the next second, I shouted his name.
Wang Wei asked what was wrong.
I said, "Step on the brakes!" My words fell too late; it was already too late.
