After I missed my punch, the Middle-Aged Werewolf struck me squarely in the chest. I was sent tumbling backward, spitting out a mouthful of blood.
Clay Bodhisattva hurried over to support me as I got back on my feet.
Wang Wei saw that I was injured and, of course, became furious. He charged straight at the werewolf, but he was no match for it.
Before long, he was knocked down.
I coughed a few times and stepped forward again. This time, I engaged the Middle-Aged Werewolf in combat. After several exchanges, I managed to take it down.
However, just then, the Wolf King's daughter appeared again.
She demanded that I release the Middle-Aged Werewolf. Given how hard I had been hit earlier, I naturally refused to let go. Wang Wei asked on my behalf, "Why should we listen to a fallen race?"
Wang Wei's words seemed to strike a nerve; they hit home.
Upon hearing this, the Princess finally fell silent. The Middle-Aged Werewolf attempted to rise and retaliate against Wang Wei, but Wang Wei was quite adept at beating down a "drowning dog."
All the werewolves were eager to join in, yet none dared to step forward.
In the end, it was the Old Woman who spoke up. She said, "You are right; our tribe has indeed fallen."
The atmosphere grew somewhat heavy. Sometimes it's easy to admit one's own shortcomings, but acknowledging the decline of an entire tribe takes a certain courage.
I sensed that something was off in the atmosphere. I placed a hand on my chest and said nothing. I prepared to leave.
At this point, what more could be said? Their decline had nothing to do with me.
Clay Bodhisattva came over to support me again, but I declined. Then I started walking forward.
"Saning, are we going back?"
"I said I'm not going back. Let's leave this place of troubles tonight." I took a few steps forward when suddenly someone called out to me. It was the Old Woman.
I glanced back but ignored her, continuing to walk ahead.
Clay Bodhisattva made a face behind me.
Human nature is not just human nature; any sentient being will look out for itself.
To be a scapegoat? Asking me to take the fall is truly a joke. A joke. As if her life mattered more than mine. Damn it.
I paid no attention to the Old Woman, who shouted from behind, "Don't you want the Dragon Vein?"
I hadn't even refused yet when someone from their tribe spoke up, telling the Old Woman to be quiet. But the Old Woman held a position of authority in the tribe and quickly silenced the others.
I straightforwardly replied, "No." Chen San had already told me about it, and I had turned down his offer as well.
The Old Woman didn't expect my refusal to be so direct. I turned around and said, "Stop trying to use me; otherwise, I'll make sure you regret it."
With that, I turned back and continued walking. Clay Bodhisattva remarked, "Saning Brother, you were quite fierce just now."
I didn't respond; I merely sighed.
Though my body was here, my mind was elsewhere. I wondered how Ke'er was doing. I looked into the distance, but all I saw was darkness.
At that moment, Clay Bodhisattva said, "Ugly Monster, why are you following us?"
"Stop," the Princess called out to me.
The Princess looked frail yet beautiful. Suddenly she said, "Why do you carry her scent?"
I looked at the Princess in surprise, and she directly said, "It's for Sister Ke'er."
"What?" I asked, astonished.
The Princess continued, "Sister Ke'er once visited our tribe, and she planted a seed here."
"A seed?"
Suddenly, the Princess changed the subject and asked, "Who are you to Sister Ke'er?" I replied that I was her husband.
"And what about Sister Ke'er?"
When the Princess asked this question, I fell silent, unsure of what to say. It was my failure to protect her. I sighed, feeling somewhat desolate.
"What kind of seed did Sister Ke'er plant?" Clay Bodhisattva inquired.
The Princess spoke softly and gently, completely different from Clay Bodhisattva's style. She said, "The Seed of Souls."
"Seed of Souls," I murmured to myself.
Ke'er's soul is very special; it seems incomplete, yet I cannot discern why. The Seed of Souls is something that both monks and Taoists have mentioned to me before.
The Seed of Souls could also be referred to as a resurrection seed.
But if Ke'er's soul clearly exists, why would she plant a Seed of Souls here? I voiced my confusion.
I knew that Ke'er was an Eternal Abyss Dweller. Such beings are forever shrouded in darkness and lightlessness, yet Ke'er seemed to have emerged from her predicament.
So who exactly pulled Ke'er out of her descent?
This matter must be related to my grandmother, yes, it definitely has to do with her, but I am puzzled about whether she has been reincarnated or not.
However, regarding the Seed of Souls, I asked the Princess where the seed is buried.
The Princess replied, "It is buried in the earth's veins." After saying this, she seemed worried that I might not understand, so she added, "The earth's veins refer to the Dragon Vein."
Upon hearing the term Dragon Vein, I felt a sense of caution rise within me. Everyone seems eager to obtain the Dragon Vein, which surely means there is something valuable within it.
But at that moment, she connected Ke'er with the Dragon Vein, which made me suspicious.
"Why is Ke'er's Soul Seed buried here?"
The Princess looked at me and explained that it was because the Dragon Vein could allow Sister Ke'er’s soul to continue existing. I could accept this explanation from the Princess.
After all, souls cannot exist forever; as time passes, they will fade away.
I then asked, "Where is the Dragon Vein?"
Wang Wei interjected sharply, "If the Dragon Vein is depleted, won't your race face extinction?"
The Princess explained that our tribe has guarded this Dragon Vein for hundreds of years and has made great sacrifices. We also wish to break free from the constraints that the Dragon Vein imposes on our tribe.
"Saning, what do you think?"
I replied, "If the Dragon Vein is destroyed, will you truly be able to escape its constraints?"
I remained skeptical about this because they were guarding the Dragon Vein. If it were destroyed, wouldn’t they perish as well?
The Princess said, "As long as the Dragon Vein is completely excavated, we will be fine. However, it's not something that can just be dug up at will; it requires certain individuals to accomplish it—and you are one of them."
"Why me?"
You are different, and I believe you know that yourself. I nodded, but even so, I still didn't want to dig for the Dragon Vein; I just wanted to retrieve Ke'er's Soul Seed.
I had no idea what state Ke'er's Soul Seed was in.
Once I got back Keer's Soul Seed, I would find Ke'er and then go to the River of Despair to collect the Reincarnation Flower.
I didn't hesitate any longer and directly asked where the Dragon Vein was. At this moment, the Wolf Clan seemed to have made up their minds; after hundreds of years of waiting, it was enough. It was time to break free from this bondage.
I suddenly wondered if Chen San had found the location of the Dragon Vein; time was running out as early morning approached.
"Let's go now," I said slowly.
I guessed that now was the right moment because the Old Woman had lured me here with the intention of taking action, but she had failed.
At that moment, a Red Moon appeared in the sky. The Red Moon was round and full, but it had some black spots on it that spread from one side to the other, albeit slowly.
The Princess made a sound of acknowledgment and quickly spoke to the Old Woman, who sighed in response.
I thought to myself, I wonder if this counts as guarding a treasure while stealing it.
Wang Wei said, "Saning, are you really going? What if they are deceivers?"
To be honest, I wasn't sure either, but since the Princess could mention Ke'er's existence, she probably wasn't lying. Besides, this Princess didn't seem like a con artist.
If I were deceived, I would accept it.
I still hoped that Wang Wei and Clay Bodhisattva wouldn't follow me.
But these two people were like clingy shadows; I didn't want them to come, yet they insisted on going.
I said, "You might die if you go."
Wang Wei replied, "With you around, how could we possibly die?"
Clay Bodhisattva added, "Even if we do die, I wouldn't mind. It's just that I won't be able to play games anymore, and there are still a bunch of teammates in the pit."
I didn't know what to say.
In a lifetime, one meets many people and experiences fleeting moments. If in the end, one can find a few true friends, that would be good.
I said, "Then let's go." The two of them quickly burst into carefree laughter.
The Old Woman soon agreed as well, and the Middle-Aged Werewolf compromised.
The Princess nodded at me.
Then we followed them. The Wolf Clan liked to howl at the moon, so I noticed they were heading toward it. The Red Moon was mottled as we walked until just past Early Morning.
The Middle-Aged Werewolf let out a howl.
The sound was so abrupt that Wang Wei complained, "What kind of ghostly howl is that?" Just then, I noticed more black spots appearing on the Red Moon.
We arrived at a cliff; it was quite steep. Perhaps due to the darkness of the night, I couldn't see the top at all.
At that moment, I saw all the werewolves raising their umbrellas.
Curiously watching them, the Princess explained that the Red Moon could harm them, which is why the Old Woman had been holding up her umbrella all along.
The Middle-Aged Werewolf knelt and bowed before the cliff, seemingly engaged in some sort of ritual. Watching the Princess with her hands clasped together, I realized this was indeed a ceremony.
About ten minutes later, the Princess suddenly stepped forward and knelt down with reverence. She then looked up at the moon and let out a howl that sent chills down my spine. It was far more terrifying than the Middle-Aged Werewolf's cries—at least ten times more so.
I couldn't help but cover my ears; the contrast between her gentle appearance and that bone-chilling howl was overwhelming.
As her howl echoed into the night, I noticed the moon seemed to be eroded by the tide, with the Red Moon now reduced to a mere sliver.
Soon, I saw a crack open in the cliffside.
What appeared to be a crack in the cliff resembled a door, and I was slightly taken aback to discover that there was indeed a hidden entrance here.
The Princess rose from the ground, and the Old Woman hurried to help her up. However, at that moment, I noticed that the Princess's eyes had turned blood red—redder than the Red Moon from before.
