Underworld Road could be considered a Dead Land, where my soul would have nowhere to escape.
At this moment, my heart was filled with complexity. Yet, despite the confusion, many things still had to be faced. Life does not pause or change simply because you feel scared or exhausted.
We all understand this, but when it comes to facing it ourselves, there is still a lingering fear.
If you were to ask me if I fear death, I would clearly tell you that I do. But sometimes, one must strive for change and fight for something.
The three-day deadline had arrived, and I crossed the River of Yellow Springs from Wang Wei's company.
This time, I was alone. I directly crossed the River of Yellow Springs. Underworld Road was as lifeless as before.
However, this time there were no One by One or Yiyan; all that remained was a transaction.
It was a deal between Jianjian and me. Standing on Underworld Road, I awaited Jianjian while feeling the atmosphere around me. I took a deep breath.
The Swamp of Death remained silent; it must still harbor souls within.
Last time, Yiyan's attempt to guide souls here must have failed, leaving these souls unrescued. Today on Underworld Road, there were still no souls in sight.
My eyes were normally black. Ever since I discovered that I was one of the White-Eyed People, I had hidden my white eyes away. Although Ke'er and Wang Wei might not care, it was something I could never let go of.
I am Saning, possessing a pair of eyes unlike anyone else's; thus, I always chose to evade.
This time, however, I did not shy away. I let my blood drip into my eyes; since I am one of the White-Eyed People, I should face this for the last time as one of them.
The pain surged over me like a tidal wave.
But this time, I did not cry out. I gritted my teeth, beads of sweat streaming down from my forehead, and blood trickling from the corner of my mouth.
The pain was overwhelming.
I gasped for breath but managed to endure it.
My white eyes swallowed the black pupils, and I breathed heavily. I thought to myself, this is the truest version of me, as the white of my eyes emerged.
I was still standing on the Underworld Road waiting for Jianjian. I couldn't tell if time was passing on Underworld Road; all I knew was that as my eyes turned white, I noticed more things around me, as if the hidden souls were suddenly surfacing at this moment.
But Jianjian did not arrive. Instead, I encountered Clay Bodhisattva.
"Saning Brother, it's me!" Clay Bodhisattva shouted, appearing from nowhere.
I turned to look and saw Clay Bodhisattva stepping into the void. She said, "Saning Brother. I'm here."
Seeing Clay Bodhisattva left me speechless; she was one of those carefree girls.
Clay Bodhisattva ran towards me, followed by Wang Wei and Wind Tree.
I asked Clay Bodhisattva, "How did you get here?"
Clay Bodhisattva replied, "I don't know; I just followed you in."
But this Underworld was supposed to be a place where living people shouldn't be able to enter so easily. Suddenly, I recalled what Yiyan and another monk had said before—that Clay Bodhisattva was a golden body of the Buddhist Community. However, no matter how I looked at it, Clay Bodhisattva didn't seem like a golden body of the Buddhist Community.
Moreover, Clay Bodhisattva was a girl; how could she possibly be a golden body of the Buddhist Community?
Clay Bodhisattva looked at me happily, while Wind Tree was being held by Wang Wei. I urged Clay Bodhisattva to stop messing around and quickly leave this place. Clay Bodhisattva insisted that he wasn't causing any trouble, saying that someone wanted to bully me, which was unacceptable.
Clay Bodhisattva was somewhat unreliable; I knew that.
I glanced at Wang Wei. Although he also had his moments of unreliability, compared to Clay Bodhisattva, he was relatively dependable. I told Wang Wei to take them back.
The way back had already been opened up by me, but Wang Wei was unwilling to return.
I said to Wang Wei, "You wasted twenty years; this time you have a chance at rebirth. If you die here, won't you feel regret?"
To be honest, it hadn't been easy for Wang Wei.
After twenty years, I didn't want anything to happen to him here, which was why I urged him to leave. But at that moment, Wang Wei seemed stubbornly set on staying.
Clay Bodhisattva declared earnestly, "Saning Brother, don't worry. With us around, we will definitely ensure that Sister Ke'er is safe."
Clay Bodhisattva called out to Wang Wei. Wang Wei asked what was going on.
Clay Bodhisattva suggested that they find a place to hide and strike when the time was right. After saying this, he pulled Wang Wei along, and Wind Tree called me brother.
I told Clay Bodhisattva to stop, but at that moment, he treated my words as if they were just passing whispers.
They headed into the Swamp of Death.
I originally wanted them to leave this place, but just then, Jianjian's voice rang out. She still called me Saning Brother, but at that moment, I felt an overwhelming urge to hit her.
"Saning Brother, you came after all."
I let out a sound of agreement; of course I had to come. If I didn't, Ke'er would die forever. I didn't waste any time talking to Jianjian and said, "Let me see Ke'er first."
At that moment, Jianjian appeared from the void, one hand raised with a clenched fist. Then, in the next second, her hand gently lifted, and a Light Spot scattered into the air.
As soon as the Light Spot appeared, I felt Ke'er's presence—truly and unmistakably Ke'er's essence.
I couldn't believe that Ke'er had fallen into Jianjian's hands. From the looks of it, Jianjian seemed to have been transformed, as if she had become a dust of starlight scattered around.
"Where is Ke'er?" I asked directly. A handful of soul dust could not fool me.
"Saning Brother, do you still not believe that Sister Ke'er is in my hands?"
Deep down, I already believed it, but I couldn't bring myself to say so. Jianjian had changed from her previously delicate demeanor to one that was incredibly shrewd.
"Saning Brother, don't you remember how I almost took your soul last time? What else is there for you not to believe?"
Yes, I believed it, but I refused to admit it. How could I feel at ease without seeing Ke'er?
Suddenly, Jianjian laughed and said, "Saning, you are still so pitiful." After saying that, I finally saw Ke'er's soul.
However, at that moment, Ke'er's soul seemed to be in a state of slumber, as if she had not yet awakened.
I anxiously called out her name. "Ke'er!"
But there was no response. I turned to Jianjian and asked, "What did you do to Ke'er?"
Jianjian replied that she hadn't done anything; Ke'er's soul was simply in a temporary slumber. This Underworld was a Dead Land—a vast expanse of endless Dead Land.
I sighed and said, "What if I completely scatter my soul and you still don't release Ke'er?"
Jianjian replied, "I have no use for her soul."
"Saning Brother, stop stalling."
If I were to completely scatter my soul, I didn't know if Ke'er's soul could be saved. It was a dangerous thing to do it unilaterally.
Could Jianjian be trusted? At that moment, she was absolutely untrustworthy in my mind.
I needed to come up with a plan. My thoughts were unsettled, and I felt restless as I looked at Ke'er's soul, with no sense of certainty in my heart.
But just then, Wind Tree suddenly ran out and called out, "Sister!"
Clay Bodhisattva and Wang Wei did not follow her out.
I wondered what those two were up to. Just then, seeing Wind Tree sparked an idea in my mind. I quickly picked her up.
Little Wind Tree looked at Ke'er hanging in the air and asked, "Brother, what's wrong with Sister?"
I reassured her that everything was fine. Then I turned to Jianjian and said, "You hand over Ke'er's soul to Wind Tree, and then I'll completely scatter my soul."
Jianjian sneered and said, "Do you think I'm that foolish?"
At this point, neither of us was willing to back down. Finally, we came up with a compromise: we would first hand over half of the soul.
There was no better solution than this. We decided on giving half of the soul. Once that was settled, Jianjian wasted no time and directly divided the soul in half.
I caught Ke'er’s soul and handed it over to Wind Tree. When I looked again, Ke'er’s soul had vanished.
Without the complete soul, Ke'er would struggle to awaken.
I feared that when my own soul began to split, the two other souls hidden in my eyes would be harmed.
So, I extracted Ke'er’s soul and let it attach to the sleeping Ke'er. I knew that Evil Being was not dead yet.
I asked, "Are you coming out?"
Evil Being replied, "Forget it, I won't come out. Let's see how you die."
I said, "You want to die yourself."
Evil Being retorted, "I've never seen someone as foolish as you. You're getting stronger; which White-Eyed Person would split themselves? Only you could be this stupid. When I obtained the blood of the White-Eyed People back then, it was merely a stroke of luck. The White-Eyed People may have had a bad fate, but none were as foolish as you."
I told that bastard to shut up. Evil Being chuckled a few times and then fell silent.
I didn’t know how many souls were now hidden in my eyes, but it must have been a lot—too many to count. I instructed Wind Tree to take Ke'er away.
Then I began to pay my price; my soul separated from my body and instantly started to spread out.
The light on Underworld Road was already dim, but when my soul emerged, the place suddenly brightened a bit.
My soul slowly dispersed, scattering everywhere.
My body felt like a cotton candy cloud, beginning to float around as my soul separated. At that moment, a mournful song seemed to echo again, a soft wailing sound filling the air.
However, this time I did not hesitate. Earth Demon Bianwang.
My soul slowly floated into the air, transforming into countless Light Spots, gradually turning the Underworld Road into an endless starry sky.
It was beautiful, yet somewhat tragic.
This time, my soul becoming a Light Spot was different from before; once my soul turned into a Light Spot, it would no longer merge. At this moment, I could see Jianjian moving.
Although Jianjian did not move, all the souls that had split from my body surged toward her.
And my eyes would eventually turn into Light Spots as well, to be taken by Jianjian. I could sense everything Jianjian was doing, but I could not resist.
The souls that once followed me finally sang a mournful song.
