"If anything happens to her, do you think you would still be standing here talking to me?" Jin Chengyan turned away, not sparing her another glance as he headed toward Ruan Shengyu's room.
Xu Lin felt as if she were about to collapse. Just then, she looked up and saw A-Shan, who appeared even more intimidating than Jin Chengyan, and suddenly felt even worse.
A-Shan ignored Xu Lin and walked past her into the living room, clearly displeased with the lack of light and equally unhappy to be at Miss Ruan's place.
Jin Chengyan pushed open the door to Ruan Shengyu's bedroom.
Inside was shrouded in darkness as well. He turned on the lamp and saw Ruan Shengyu curled up on the bed.
Jin Chengyan's heart shrank suddenly.
"Shengyu?" Jin Chengyan walked over, sat down beside her, and placed his hand on her shoulder.
Ruan Shengyu instinctively recoiled, resisting him with a soft "no."
"It's me, Ayan. Are you still going to hide from me?" Jin Chengyan leaned in closer, his tone gentler. "I'm sorry I couldn't be by your side right away yesterday. Can you forgive me?"
Facing Ruan Shengyu, Jin Chengyan poured out all his tenderness.
He had done everything he could to keep those rumors from spreading, but as a public figure, Ruan Shengyu couldn't escape them completely.
Hearing Jin Chengyan's voice, Ruan Shengyu emerged from under the blanket and wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her head against his chest.
"Ayan... Ayan..." she sobbed softly, all her grievances condensed into those two words.
Her body trembled with each sob, completely tugging at Jin Chengyan's heartstrings.
He held Ruan Shengyu tightly, using his warmth to comfort her.
"Alright, it's okay. I'm here; no one dares to bully you," Jin Chengyan gently patted Ruan Shengyu's shoulder.
With the embrace of her beloved, all of Ruan Shengyu's grievances poured out. "I knew there would be things like this when I entered the entertainment industry, but I always... always thought that as long as I kept myself clean and refused, it wouldn't happen..."
Jin Chengyan rarely saw her this vulnerable, and it made his heart tighten.
"I will make those who bullied you pay the price. In a couple of days, this news will be replaced by something else, so you don’t have to worry."
Ruan Shengyu indeed had not worried about that; her concerns lay elsewhere.
"But Ayan, you have fallen for someone else, haven’t you?" Ruan Shengyu broke free from Jin Chengyan's grasp, looking at him with tear-filled eyes.
