Seven had a rough idea about the beam of light; it must be the light projected down from Skylight.
Wang Er Gou spoke up at the right moment, "Everyone, don't be afraid. This is just a wind tunnel, and the light is shining down from above." Those who were timid and hesitant to move forward had been walking in darkness for so long that suddenly discovering a light felt eerie.
One person said, "Dog Brother, since you're so confident, why don't you go first?" The others chimed in with encouragement. Wang Er Gou instinctively took a step back.
Wu Qingshan urged, " Er Gou, you should lead the way!" Wang Er Gou swallowed the excuses he was about to make and gritted his teeth, saying, "Thanks for your support, then I won't hold back."
Wang Er Gou stepped forward but then slowed his pace. He felt uneasy inside, thinking to himself, "Damn it, this Feng Shui stuff has caused me a lot of trouble."
When he reached the circle of light, Wang Er Gou stopped. Seeing him halt, everyone thought something was wrong. Wu Qingshan called out, " Er Gou."
Only then did Wang Er Gou turn around and wave to everyone, shouting, "It's safe! Come over!"
With some skepticism, they walked toward him. Once they saw that nothing was wrong, laughter erupted among the group. They praised Wang Er Gou for his skills, calling him a true master of Feng Shui.
Wang Er Gou thanked them one by one. After the commotion settled down, the group continued moving forward. Holding his compass, Wang Er Gou said, "If we keep going a bit further, we should be almost there."
Now most of the group trusted him, believing in his words with about seventy to eighty percent confidence.
Wang Er Gou said this to reassure everyone; he was in a precarious situation. They had risked their lives to follow him into this desolate Stone Forest. If he didn't bring something back, they would surely blame him.
However, Wang Er Gou had indeed heard rumors of treasures hidden within Stone Forest. Feng Shui texts mentioned that places of great danger often concealed valuable items.
This time, Wang Er Gou was serious; fortune favors the bold. If this venture failed, his life would likely be in jeopardy.
As they continued on their way, the strange sound that Seven had heard earlier returned once more.
Wang Er Gou and his group also caught wind of this peculiar noise, which seemed to come and go, sometimes long and drawn out, other times short and abrupt. It was different from what they had heard before. Seven felt a growing sense of unease; the sound was becoming increasingly eerie.
“Could it be a ghost?” Ah Si suddenly suggested. The dark surroundings made his words even more chilling, and a cold breeze seemed to sweep past them from behind.
A voice trembled as someone spoke up, “Wu Ge, should we head back?” Wu Qingshan hesitated, feeling uncertain.
Seeing the others wavering, Wang Er Gou feigned calmness and said, “Everyone, don’t be afraid. This is not the best time to retreat.”
Just as he finished speaking, a loud crash echoed as something fell from above and struck Wang Er Gou to the ground. Dazed, he struggled to comprehend what had just happened.
The rest were startled into silence, frozen in place. Seven witnessed the scene but couldn’t see clearly from a distance.
Wang Er Gou’s mind began to clear. He soon caught a whiff of a terrible stench that made him feel lightheaded again. Cursing under his breath, he exclaimed, “Damn it! What kind of rotten thing is crushing me!”
The torch flickered in the darkness. Everyone finally saw what had fallen—it was a person, or rather, a corpse.
Upon hearing the word "corpse," Wang Er Gou kicked the body away with little hesitation, and no one dared to approach.
After stumbling to his feet, Wang Er Gou muttered curses under his breath. The others looked at him in shock. He felt something was off and glanced down to find himself covered in white worms that were crawling out from the corpse.
Wang Er Gou screamed, “Run! Run!” as he swatted at the worms on his body. More and more of them appeared, densely crowding the entire path. The group ran for their lives. What had once been a relatively wide road now felt cramped and suffocating. Wang Er Gou found himself pushed to the back of the pack.
Finally managing to push his way to the front, he noticed someone behind him pause for a moment before cursing. Little did that person know that the white worms had already begun crawling onto him. In no time at all, they consumed his entire body; he let out a scream of agony before turning into a pile of bones just minutes later. Wang Er Gou turned around and nearly lost half his life from fright. He quickened his pace as they neared Seven ’s hiding spot.
Seven realized there was no time to waste. Those were termites; if they kept running like this, everyone would die. No one would escape. Suddenly appearing from hiding, Seven startled the group into thinking he was a ghost, almost causing them to flee back in panic. It wasn’t until he spoke up to prove he was alive that they half-believed him.
By the light of the fire, everyone could see his appearance clearly. "So it's you, kid," Wu Qingshan cursed. Seven immediately said, "This isn't the time to talk about that. Everyone, quickly take out anything that can burn." There was no time for them to argue; they gathered all the flammable items they could find. The white ants were approaching fast. Fortunately, they had brought fuel, and the flames surged up instantly, forming a barrier of fire that incinerated the ants at the front. Seeing that this tactic was effective, everyone felt a bit more at ease.
Now, with their hearts still racing, none of them spoke a word of comfort.
At that moment, something left them speechless: those damn white ants were flapping their wings and flying toward them. At first, there were just a few, but soon they swarmed in like moths to a flame.
Seven's sharp eyes caught sight of this and alerted the others.
Before they could fully vent their frustrations, they found themselves in danger again and scrambled to retreat.
Seven couldn't afford to think too much; everyone fled toward the other side of the cave entrance. After running for a while, thankfully, no one had dropped their torches.
They splashed through the mud as they ran in the direction from which they had come.
"Is this the exit?" Seven shouted to Wang Er Gou.
Panting heavily, Wang Er Gou replied, "Yes, that's right."
"How far is it?" Seven continued to ask.
"It's just ahead," Wang Er Gou answered.
The white ants were densely swarming behind them. Soon after, they heard a scream—it was A-San, crying out loudly, "Wu Ge, save me!" Wu Qingshan paused and looked back to see that the white ants had completely overtaken him. After a few more agonized cries, he fell silent.
"Wu Ge, what are you waiting for? It's time to escape!" Wang Er Gou shouted at Wu Qingshan. Wu Qingshan choked out a response: "But..."
Ah Si wanted to rush over and screamed desperately, "Brother, you can't die!" Wu Qingshan grabbed Ah Si's arm and scolded him firmly: "We need to escape first; your brother won't die in vain!"
"Now is not the time to think about the dead; we need to focus on the living," Seven shouted.
Ah Si gritted his teeth, tears welling up in his eyes.
The others urged him on, and after being persuaded, Ah Si continued running forward with Wu Qingshan, as A-San's death had already cost them precious time.
After running for a while, they finally saw some natural light. Seven felt a sense of hope; he knew that Skylight was near.
"Wang Er Gou shouted, "Everyone, hurry! The exit is just ahead!" A group of people on the brink of death became frantic at the prospect of survival.
Ropes— Seven spotted the ropes they had used to climb down, with only two scattered about. It seemed that only two people could escape at a time.
The first few people who reached the ropes began to fight over them. Wu Qingshan shouted angrily, "Don't fight! One rope can hold two people; we can only take four at a time!"
Wu Qingshan's words carried weight, and everyone lined up accordingly. The first four climbed up, leaving three behind: Wang Er Gou, Wu Qingshan, and Seven.
"This is bad; those 'bastards' are coming!" Wang Er Gou yelled.
The others looked up and saw that two people had already reached the exit. Meanwhile, the swarm of termites was closing in on them. Panic gripped their hearts—would they lose their lives here?
Seven stared at the endless horde of ants, a tingling sensation creeping over his scalp. Several termites were already flapping their wings and flying toward them. Seven swung his shovel and crushed a few.
Wang Er Gou fired several shots. At that moment, those above shouted that they could start climbing up, but there were still two people hanging on the rope, meaning only two could ascend at a time.
The three exchanged glances, beads of sweat forming on their foreheads. With the termites about to overwhelm them, it was a matter of life or death; they had to make a choice within seconds.
Seven felt the most uncertain, estimating that his forehead was covered in cold sweat. Wang Er Gou had slowly raised his gun, but Wu Qingshan pressed down on it with his hand. He calmly said, "Everyone, hold on a little longer." At the same time, he shouted upwards, "Damn it, hurry up and climb!"
After hearing this, Seven finally felt a sense of relief.
He glanced gratefully at Wu Qingshan, but at that moment, the termites had already reached them. A few people used torches to drive them away; they were indeed afraid of fire. This standoff lasted for about a minute, but still, some managed to break through.
A few termites landed on Seven and began to bite him. It was then that he truly experienced the terror of these creatures; their bites were painful. Seven crushed them with his hands.
This could only provide temporary relief, as more termites would soon break through, making things even more difficult. After a while of this stalemate, a voice finally came from above saying they could start climbing up.
The three of them threw their torches to the ground and turned to grab the rope to climb up. Termites flew towards them, but fortunately, those above pulled and dragged a few people up quickly. Still, Seven felt sharp pains on his back from several bites.
As the three escaped upwards, the sun hung high in the sky. The few termites clinging to them saw the light and hurried towards the hole's opening. Those that couldn't escape in time were crushed underfoot.
The three lay on the ground, gasping for breath; they had finally made it out.
However, before they could catch their breath, another crisis arose.
Wang Er Gou was being threatened by Ah Si with a gun pointed at him. Just as Wang Er Gou regained his senses and wiped away the sweat, he opened his eyes to see the gun's muzzle and Ah Si's furious gaze.
