He released the Mountain Girl's hand and said calmly, "I'm tired. I’ll go rest for a bit."
He walked straight towards Xin Shui Su.
Xin Shui Su sat there quietly, watching him approach without much reaction.
As he got closer, Xin Shui Su naturally said, "You’re here."
He replied, "Yes."
He casually found a spot on the ground and sat down facing Xin Shui Su. The Mountain Girl also came over.
Xin Shui Su said, "Someone came looking for you."
He turned to look and smiled, saying, "Just a little girl." Rice followed closely behind. The Mountain Girl directly asked, "I still don’t know your name?"
He smiled and said, "My name is Yu Li." He omitted one character from his name.
The Mountain Girl repeated his name, saying, "Yu Li, Yu Li, it sounds better than my name. I’m Wang Yunyun."
He complimented the Mountain Girl's name as well and suddenly recalled the moment he had been lost in thought, glancing at Xin Shui Su; her eyes were just as clear.
The Mountain Girl smiled with satisfaction and said, "Yu Li, I’ll go get something to eat for you," and with that, she bounced away.
At that moment, Rice also arrived and said to him, "Kid, I advise you not to mess with my Sister Three. If I end up hitting you, don’t come begging for mercy."
He didn’t respond, and Rice quickly turned around, calling out for Sister Three as he chased after her.
A smile appeared at the corner of Third's mouth.
Third straightened his expression and asked, "Did you arrive three days ago?"
Xin Shui Su nodded and replied, "I was invited by them to help."
Third continued, "Have you gone out before?" Xin Shui Su shook her head and said, "We just entered the village three days ago; those people are all helping Old Scholar and the students."
"You haven't gone into the mountains yet," Third noted. Xin Shui Su shook her head again.
Third seemed to understand and whispered, "Another team has arrived." Looking at Third's serious demeanor, Xin Shui Su said, "I see."
Third replied, "I'll take my leave now." Suddenly, Xin Shui Su said, "Why don't you join the archaeological team?"
Third looked at Xin Shui Su with slight surprise.
Xin Shui Su added, "That way you'll be safer," and then fell silent.
"I need to inform the others," Third said before leaving.
Xin Shui Su watched as Third disappeared into thin air, then glanced at the jungle, feeling a bit lost in thought. When Mountain Girl arrived, she asked, "Where did Yu Li go?"
Xin Shui Su replied, "He just left."
Mountain Girl asked with some disappointment, "Sister Su, can you tell me where he went?"
Xin Shui Su gently looked at Mountain Girl and said, "He will be back soon."
Mountain Girl, satisfied with the answer, took out the food and handed it to Xin Shui Su for tasting.
The moonlight bathed the land in a silvery glow as Third returned to the other three. He explained the situation to them.
Second expressed surprise, saying, "The people who entered the village weren't those just now!"
Third nodded. Seven asked, "Is it appropriate for us to go in directly like this?"
Third glanced at Wang Er Gou.
Wang Er Gou replied, "I have no problem." However, Third said, "Brother Wang, you can't reveal your identity just yet."
After considering it for a moment, Wang Er Gou agreed to Third's request.
He slightly altered his makeup and changed his outfit to avoid being recognized by the villagers, which could alert them unnecessarily.
Once he was ready, Wang Er Gou appeared somewhat older.
Second chuckled, "From now on, when I see you, I’ll have to call you 'Sir.'"
But Wang Er Gou was not in the mood for jokes and could only manage a few awkward laughs. Under the cover of night, the group packed their belongings and slipped into the village.
The next day, as dawn broke and the archaeological team gathered to prepare for their journey into the mountains, they noticed a few extra people among them.
Xin Shui Su approached the team leader and whispered a few words.
The leader appeared to be a man in his fifties. After listening to Xin Shui Su, he said, "Let's give a warm welcome to our new comrades."
After a round of applause, everyone began to prepare for the journey into the mountains.
Once Wang Er Gou had put on his disguise, no one recognized him. With so many people around, along with the four from Third, the entire group numbered nearly twenty.
Among them was an Old Scholar wearing reading glasses and leaning on a cane, looking quite like an elderly gentleman.
Old Third privately advised a few not to draw their weapons. Second glanced at the crowd inside, all of whom had a scholarly demeanor.
Second sighed and said, "Do you think these people can climb the mountain?"
A young girl overheard him and retorted without hesitation, "Don't look down on others."
Second chuckled, "You little girl have quite the temper."
The girl replied, "Just wait and see." After that, she ignored Second, who opened his mouth to respond but then closed it again.
Seven stood nearby, watching Second with an amused expression that spoke volumes. Second shouted, "Why are you laughing so lewdly?"
Seven's smile immediately faded as he sheepishly stepped back.
The entire group had gathered but had yet to set off. A few impatient young people approached the leader and asked, "Why aren't we leaving yet?"
The leader was a kind man and patiently explained, "We're waiting for someone to guide us into the mountains. They should be here shortly."
The young people had no choice but to wait.
Soon, a voice came from afar, "Sorry to keep you all waiting!" Even before seeing the person, they could recognize him by his voice. It was deep and powerful, suggesting he was of some age, Third thought to himself.
As the man rushed forward, he repeatedly apologized to the team leader, "Thanks for waiting for me."
The team leader replied, "No problem. Are you ready?"
He nodded. It was clear he was a hunter, dressed simply and carrying an old-fashioned shotgun over his shoulder.
Wang Er Gou immediately recognized him; this was his Second Uncle. In their village, most people were related, and the elders held a certain status.
He glanced at the crowd and stepped back slightly. His Second Uncle had been a hunter for decades, with a nose sharper than a dog's.
His Second Uncle shielded his forehead with his hand and looked up at the sky, saying, "It's a nice day today; the Mountain Deity won't be angry with us." After that, he signaled to the team leader that they could set off.
His Second Uncle was quite chatty, asking questions along the way. The other four learned that this archaeological team had been sent by the Eastern Pass Government. A few days earlier, heavy rain had caused a landslide that revealed a Tomb.
The villagers said it was the Mountain Deity's wrath and were too afraid to go up the mountain. However, some villagers found antiques in the river below and took them to the city to exchange for money. The news spread quickly, prompting the government to send this archaeological team.
No one knew the exact location of the ancient tomb because no one dared venture deep into the mountains. Even the bravest villagers only dared to explore around the nearby hills due to the many man-eating beasts rumored to inhabit them; some even claimed to have seen wild men.
Although generations of villagers had lived here, they still feared entering the deep mountains—a tradition passed down through many years.
His Second Uncle was bold; he had ventured into the deep mountains before and was skilled at hunting. He often brought back animals that no one in the village had ever seen before and would sometimes share large catches with everyone in the village.
Thus, His Second Uncle held a high status in the village. After walking a short distance, a dog came barking after them.
His Second Uncle turned around excitedly and shouted, "Ah Huang! I knew you would come!"
The words surprised a few people. Was a dog really speaking? Wang Er Gou, however, understood that His Second Uncle had always been like this with animals.
The dog named Ah Huang affectionately jumped towards His Second Uncle, licking him with its tongue, and His Second Uncle laughed heartily. He patted Ah Huang on the head and said, "Stop fooling around; it's time to get serious."
Ah Huang wagged its tail, and His Second Uncle stood up as well.
Ah Huang quickly ran ahead, and His Second Uncle followed closely behind, as if he didn't take the entire archaeological team seriously at all.
The whole team had already left the village and was heading towards the mountains.
Right behind the village lay the mountains, which could be easily accessed from there. However, the villagers were not very keen on this. They were worried because the team was there to dig graves. They feared that they might anger the Mountain Deity and bring trouble to the village.
The archaeological team understood their concerns and decided to take a longer route up the mountain.
When they reached the base of the mountain, His Second Uncle said, "Once we’re up there, don’t speak carelessly. If you anger the Mountain Deity, I won’t be responsible."
Someone in the team shouted, "What era are we in? Why are you still so superstitious?"
His Second Uncle continued, "You’ve been warned. If something happens to you later, don’t blame me for not telling you."
Just as the young man was about to retort, he was scolded by the team leader. The young man had no choice but to fall silent, muttering under his breath about how old-fashioned it all was.
His Second Uncle looked at everyone with satisfaction and called out, "Let’s head up the mountain." Upon hearing his voice, Ah Huang seemed to become very excited and dashed into the mountains.
His Second Uncle shouted, "Let it slow down," but Ah Huang acted as if it hadn’t heard him.
This archaeological team brought along many tools but still did not have an exact location for the Tomb.
They had originally intended to follow the river upstream, but there was a waterfall blocking their way, so they had no choice but to ascend from this point.
His Second Uncle informed them that he could lead the group to that location. Taking advantage of the numbers, they hunted for a few more helpers. The Eastern Guan Mountain Range was steep and stretched endlessly, with many areas featuring sheer cliffs.
His Second Uncle cautioned the team, "Everyone be careful; this area is dense with mountains and forests. If we're not careful, we might be taken by the Mountain Deity."
Wang Er Gou warned a few of them, "This mountain range is quite peculiar. There's no feng shui down below; it's as if all the formations are locked away. It's rather eerie, so everyone stay alert."
Xin Shui Su walked alongside them, and when Wang Er Gou finished speaking, Xin Shui Su glanced at him.
Previously, several young girls in the group had been sticking close to Xin Shui Su.
In his memory, Xin Shui Su was not so approachable; she usually had a cold demeanor. How could this be? Third wondered inwardly.
The others were also quite surprised, except for Wang Er Gou.
Second whispered, "Has this Strong Person's personality changed?" Ever since Xin Shui Su had demonstrated her abilities in front of them, Second had referred to her as the Strong Person.
Seven also watched closely, but Xin Shui Su acted as if they didn't exist at all and continued chatting with the young girls.
